Chapter 1031 - 1004: The Eternal Riddle According to Qian

Watching him mope like a little kid who can’t get candy, Qian reached out to pat his head and comforted him.

"There’s an old saying: early fat doesn’t count as fat, it’s the later fat that crushes the bed! Let them be smug for now. Once we have a pretty, smart little girl, we’ll make Second Yu die of envy."

"How do you know Second Brother’s second kid isn’t a girl?"

"I’m a state-certified fortune-teller, remember!" Qian tilted her head up smugly, and Yu Minglang took the chance to steal a kiss.

In fact, Qian had reasoned it out like this: nobody knew why, but in the Yu Family it had always been more boys than girls; each generation only had one girl, and it had gone on like that for three generations.

If the pattern held and she later gave birth to Xiaowei, then Second Yu’s second child would most likely be a boy.

Her mother-in-law and elder sister-in-law also felt that Da Yi’s first pregnancy was probably a boy; the sister-in-law was an OB-GYN, after all, and had some experience with these things.

"It’s fine, even if it’s a son I won’t dislike him." Hearing Qian’s consolation, Yu Minglang no longer felt so stifled. He stroked her belly, his tender gaze as if there were already a little baby inside.

After a moment, he added, "But if we could have a daughter who takes after you, that would be even better."

Qian really wanted to go along with him, but given she’d already seen their daughter’s face in her previous life, she couldn’t bring herself to fudge it—his expression was way too expectant. Lying would give her an odd sense of guilt.

"Daughters all take after their dads. If it really is a girl, she’ll look a lot like you, seriously."

Xiaowei did resemble her dad more—not just in looks, but even in that aura between her brows and eyes. The only things she’d inherited from her mom were the shape of her face and that little beauty mark on her forehead.

Yu Minglang shivered at her description. He honestly couldn’t imagine what he’d look like if he were turned into a girl; it just sounded terrifying.

"She’s very pretty, an absolute stunner. In kindergarten, boys were tugging on her braids; in grade school, kids were waiting at the gate every day to go to and from school with her; by middle school, she was getting love letters every day. So, as you can see, your genes are quite powerful."

The men in Xiaowei’s life were really something else, but Xiaowei herself hated that feeling of being the center of attention and always tried to avoid it.

"You’re talking like it really happened, and you’re thinking way too far ahead." Yu Minglang flicked her little nose.

Qian just smiled mysteriously.

Everything she said was true.

Right now, the two of them were only saying all this casually, treating it like a joke.

But on their way to the barbecue place, Yu Minglang saw a teenage couple in school uniforms run past, and his brows knotted.

"What is it?" Qian followed his gaze; the boy was touching the girl’s face over and over.

"If we really have a girl, I’ll have to train her in self-defense in a planned way. When it’s time to hit, she has to hit. Can’t let those punk boys take advantage of her."

"..." Qian grumbled inwardly. He’d just said she was the one thinking too far ahead, but he was no better!

Second Brother’s family had already arrived early. Mr. Yu still had that ice-cube face, but the way he looked after Da Yi was so smooth and natural it was almost too much.

Panpan was sitting obediently to the side; when Yu Minglang arrived, he casually scooped Panpan up into his arms.

"Panpan, have you gotten taller lately?"

"Yes, three centimeters taller. Looks like he’ll grow even taller in the future." Da Yi paid particular attention to these details.

"Kids really grow fast." Qian nodded.

Even though Panpan wasn’t Second Brother’s biological child, he was growing better and better—fine brows and bright eyes. After being around Second Yu long-term, he’d picked up some of that cool vibe from him. He’d surely be very popular with girls when he grew up.

For some reason, though, Qian felt that she’d seen someone who looked a bit like Panpan somewhere before. She’d never had this feeling until today.

"Ten skewers of beef tendon for my wife, and another ten of soft tendon. Wife, what else do you want to eat?" Yu Minglang was ordering for Qian when he noticed she was just staring at Panpan, as if she hadn’t heard him, so he reached out and pushed her lightly.

Qian finally snapped back to herself.

"Oh, uh, whatever is fine."

It really was strange. Why hadn’t she ever had this feeling before?

Noticing that his Little Aunt had been looking at him, Panpan lifted his head and, in a shy, showing-off tone, said to Qian,

"Little Aunt, I’m wearing the same clothes as Dad today."

Even their hairstyles matched!

That afternoon, Second Brother had just gotten a haircut. Panpan, who’d always seen him as his idol, demanded to get the exact same style. Da Yi happened to be taking the pair of them shopping and picked up matching father–son outfits for them, so the little guy was currently over the moon.

Qian smiled. "You do look very handsome, and you look a lot like your dad."

Maybe she was overthinking it. Panpan and Second Brother were in matching outfits today, and their vibe was very similar. She was probably just seeing a resemblance between Panpan and Second Brother.

That line won the little guy’s heart, and he ate his skewers with even more gusto.

Panpan especially loved hearing people say he looked like Second Yu. Whenever someone said it, he’d show this slightly shy expression. Qian didn’t know whether he knew he was adopted, but she did know how deeply he adored Second Brother.

Seeing Panpan like that, Da Yi couldn’t help teasing, "Panpan, if you keep idolizing your dad like this, you’ll turn into a Type 6 personality, you know."

"What’s that?" Panpan paused, looking at his mom blankly.

Earlier today, Qian had just been analyzing how Team Leader Apiao was a Type 6 personality because he idolized his father’s achievements, so hearing Da Yi tease the kid like that made her laugh.

"Don’t fool the kid. Panpan is not a Type 6 personality. Besides, personality isn’t something you inherit."

As soon as she said that, Da Yi suddenly remembered something.

"Qian, I’ve been studying how heredity affects personality lately, and there are some things I don’t understand. I wanted to ask you about them."

After getting pregnant, Da Yi had cut back on her workload under Mrs. Yu and the others’ strong insistence, for the sake of the pregnancy, but she hadn’t stopped entirely and was also self-studying.

"What don’t you understand?"

"I read that some problematic personality types are innate, right? So is there actually such a thing as a violence gene? I saw a case saying that someone with violent tendencies is more likely to have a child with similar tendencies. Even if that child isn’t raised by them, the likelihood of violence is still higher than in the general population. So does this overturn what we learned before, that personality is related to environment?"

"This issue is actually pretty controversial. So far, scientists haven’t definitively identified a violence gene. To maintain social stability and oppose discrimination, most viewpoints deny that crime is hereditary. Given our current national conditions, we also don’t encourage implicating family members."

Imagine if someone committed a terrible crime, and then everyone went on to discriminate against their family—even though the family members themselves had done nothing illegal. That would clearly be unfair and discriminatory.

"Then what do you think?" Da Yi asked Qian.
