Chapter 487: Village Chief
"Alright, thank you for your help." Lu Zhen thanked him and turned back to grab the water bottle Lu Tao was holding in his hand before offering it to the elderly man.
It didn’t matter whether this elderly was digging a trap for them. Courtesy should still be observed.
Once the elderly man took the water bottle, his excited expression suddenly turned to one of pity.
But he said nothing and limped away.
Lu Zhen ushered his dazed brother back into the car and asked him to drive forward.
"But didn’t that old man say the road was ruined?" Lu Tao asked in confusion.
"You believe everything everyone says?" Lu Zhen felt like he needed to educate his brother a bit more.
"Oh.. alright. I’ll drive." Lu Tao seemed to come back to his senses and started the engine before driving forward.
The people from the car behind had not gotten off, yet with their superior hearing, they heard every word the old man said to Lu Zhen.
None of them were idiots. It was obvious that something was wrong somewhere.
The elderly man had seemingly jumped out of a pit, or something like that to stop their car.
There were no trees around to hide anyone, and there were certainly no buildings.
Even the aforementioned village was not in view, which meant it was a bit far from the main road.
So, did that old man just lay in wait to warn anyone driving by?
That was obviously unrealistic.
So, why was he there? What was in that village that they forced travellers passing through to enter?
"So, what do you think that compassionate village chief is plotting?" Leng Pan suddenly asked.
This time, she didn’t discuss this solely with Lu Zhen but turned on the walkie-talkie they were using to communicate with the car behind for everyone to partake.
"Eh, Commander, why didn’t you ask what that old man was plotting? He was the one who stopped us." ZaiZai’s voice came through the walkie-talkie.
Leng Pan sighed at his naivety.
"You fool." Su Yan knocked ZaiZai on the head before Leng Pan could reply.
"That old man is obviously very bad in acting and terribly so in lying. Even though he tried his best, anyone with a brain could tell he was lying. Someone like that, what could he plot? His schemes would probably get him killed before they could succeed." Su Yan explained.
"Oh." ZaiZai said while rubbing his head.
"Su Yan is right. That old man couldn’t even fool a five-year-old. How could he fool the people travelling in this apocalypse? So, the village chief he mentioned must be the one behind the schemes. We just need to visit the village to uncover what he is hiding." Leng Pan added.
"But aren’t we following this main road? The village is behind us already." Janna seemed to feel that she needed to contribute to the chaos as well.
"Sigh..." Leng Pan sighed at how naive these children were.
"We are just going to determine what ruined the road. It is obvious that the road ahead is indeed impassable. But was it really destroyed by rats? That’s what we need to figure out." She explained patiently.
"It is possible that the villagers destroyed the roads themselves to direct traffic towards their village." Silk muttered.
"That is what I suspect." Lu Zhen agreed.
They didn’t drive for more than three kilometers before the car came to a halt.
The road in front was completely destroyed. In fact, the person who came up with the excuse that the road was dug open by rats must have thought that the brains of those passing through were filled with straw.
It was obvious that the road had been blown off. However, they didn’t use anything sophisticated but home-made explosives.
They weren’t very powerful since they blew several huge holes with a diameter of at least two or three meters in different spots.
The fields on the side of the road were the same.
It was indeed impossible to pass through this place. Especially since at one spot, it seemed the village chief was afraid people would walk and abandon their cars, so he used more explosives and blew up an entire part of the road. Creating a ten-meter long and four meters deep pit on the road.
This chasm completely broke of the connection between the part of the road on their side and that on the other side.
And true to that elderly man’s words, they could see a dirt road connecting with the other side about half a kilometer from the ditches.
This was to force the survivors travelling from both parts of the road to pass through that village.
How intriguing.
"Alright, we can go back now. Let’s see what is waiting for us in that village." Lu Zhen gave the order and everyone got back into the cars and they set off, heading back the way they came.
They found the elderly man at the side of the road, seemingly waiting for them
It seemed he was confident that they would come back.
"Can you lead us to the village?" Lu Zhen asked.
"Of course, of course. Just follow me." The elderly man didn’t ask to be let in the car but just walked ahead.
It seemed he was used to this and didn’t feel disgruntled at all that he was walking under the sun while the visitors enjoyed air conditioning in the car.
No one spoke as the cars drive at the speed of a snail. After all, they were following the elderly man and he was not only old, but also limping and obviously, hungry.
But no one conolained as they followed behind slowly.
After nearly an hour and five kilometers into their drive, they saw some thatched houses from a distance.
The houses looked small, probably due to the distance.
Except for one house with two floors and a tiled roof, every other house was low and thatched.
"That is our village." The elderly man pointed ahead at the houses with a smile.
