Chapter 761: Demanding a Gratitude Fee
"Impossible, how could my mom be locked up here? She’s Cao Ruibin’s own sister."
Kong Lingchuan shook his head, unable to believe that his uncle would treat his mom this way.
"I’m sure she’s inside. Go in and take a look."
Yang Cheng’s tone was very certain.
Kong Lingchuan hesitated for a moment, then quickly rushed in, pushing open the dusty, broken door, and saw a ragged figure curled up on a filthy little bed.
"Mom, is it you?"
He tentatively asked. The person on the bed moved slightly and slowly turned her head.
In an instant, his mind buzzed. He stared wide-eyed, unable to believe the scene before him.
The once elegant and noble mother now had dirty and disheveled hair, wearing torn clothes, eyes vacant and soulless, like a shell of a body without a soul.
"Mom, how did you become like this?"
Kong Lingchuan’s voice choked up. As he took a step forward, Cao Yumei began to frantically wave her arms, letting out a piercing scream.
Her sleeve moved, revealing her scar-covered arms, instantly stinging Kong Lingchuan’s eyes.
No matter what, this mother was his birth mother who had once cared for him immensely, though her way of showing love had been flawed.
"Mom, who hit you? Was it Cao Ruibin?"
Kong Lingchuan couldn’t help but shed tears, reaching out to hold her wrist, wanting to take a closer look at her injuries.
"Don’t pull her, she’s covered in wounds and is mentally unstable. You should arrange for a caregiver or send her to a mental hospital."
Yang Cheng spoke up, knowing full well that Cao Yumei’s situation wasn’t particularly severe and that he could fully heal her with his medical skills, but he wouldn’t intervene because this was the outcome Kong Lingwen wanted.
After a moment, Kong Lingchuan nodded, "I’ll send her tomorrow. Tonight, she’ll stay at my rented apartment first."
"Brother Cen, could you drive us there?"
"Alright."
Yang Cheng replied, turning to walk outside.
Kong Lingchuan helped Cao Yumei up, patiently persuading her until she hesitantly staggered out of the room.
At this moment, the Cao Family members approached and, seeing the filthy Cao Yumei, displayed looks of disdain.
"Kong Lingchuan, you can take her if you want, but pay up first!"
"We’ve taken care of your mom for so long; a gratitude fee is warranted. Not much, just two million."
Madam Cao’s tone was firm as she reached out to Kong Lingchuan.
"You abused my mom like this, I’m already being gracious by not holding you accountable, yet you have the audacity to ask for gratitude money?"
He gritted his teeth, and if he weren’t supporting someone at the moment, he would’ve rushed up to beat this woman.
"She’s mad and always causing trouble. I only hit her a few times when she misbehaved, didn’t injure her. Besides, she lived well at the Cao Family, eating and drinking well. Asking for two million isn’t too much."
"If you don’t pay, don’t even think about taking her away today; Cao Yumei will die as a ghost of the Cao Family!"
The woman looked arrogant, signaling to those around, who then blocked the door.
Yang Cheng frowned slightly, not wanting to waste time here, as he was leaving for Linzhou tomorrow to accompany Kong Lingwen.
He discreetly activated his Cultivation Technique, amassing energy in his palm, and unleashed a gust of force with a casual wave. The people in front seemed to fly like kites before landing heavily on the ground.
"Holy shit!"
Kong Lingchuan exclaimed in shock, staring at Yang Cheng.
"Why are you standing still? Let’s go."
Yang Cheng said impatiently.
"Oh."
Kong Lingchuan, dazed, nodded and helped Cao Yumei outside.
The wailing sounds behind stirred a sense of pride within him.
Brother Cen is truly impressive!
They successfully left the Cao Family, and Yang Cheng drove them to the rented apartment, then returned alone to the Kong Family Villa.
"Back so quickly? Did you pick her up?"
Kong Lingwen asked casually, glancing behind Yang Cheng.
"Picked her up. Cao Yumei was severely abused at the Cao Family. Kong Lingchuan will stay with her at the rented apartment tonight and take her to the mental hospital tomorrow."
Yang Cheng said.
Kong Lingwen curled her lips and snorted coldly, "That’s justice. It’s good we didn’t kill her outright; living like this is the most painful."
Seeing her demeanor, Yang Cheng knew her heart had been unburdened.
"Yang Cheng, you’re leaving tomorrow. Stay with me tonight."
At this moment, Kong Lingwen suddenly changed the topic.
Cheng Ruonan, having eaten her fill during the day, didn’t insist on Yang Cheng’s company, but she didn’t know he was leaving tomorrow and hurriedly asked, "Where are you going tomorrow?"
"I’m going to Linzhou to find Sun Essence Gold for making Sun Golden Wheel. Ms. Qi Yue is going with me, and Ruonan will stay in Zhonghai to protect Lin Wen."
Just as Yang Cheng finished speaking, Cheng Ruonan’s piercing voice echoed in his ear.
"What? You’re going with Qi Yue and not taking me?"
Her expression was hurt, her beautiful eyes watering instantly.
Yang Cheng understood her well, knowing she was feigning pity, and he said helplessly, "Your skill surpasses Ms. Qi Yue’s, staying in Zhonghai reassures me more. Moreover, I’m going to Linzhou to treat someone; you wouldn’t be much help."
"But Ms. Qi Yue doesn’t know medicine; why are you taking her?"
Cheng Ruonan asked a bit resentfully.
"Ms. Qi Yue is emotionally stable, doesn’t throw tantrums, and can assist me."
Yang Cheng answered truthfully, which only angered Cheng Ruonan further. Her ample chest heaving visibly.
"Humph! Fine, don’t go if you don’t want to. Who cares?!"
With arms crossed, she exuded a small arrogance.
"Just obediently stay in Zhonghai; don’t think of going anywhere."
Kong Lingwen wore a triumphant smile, feeling satisfied seeing Cheng Ruonan’s displeasure.
Cheng Ruonan squinted her beautiful eyes, realizing something and suddenly shouted, "Kong Lingwen! You scheming woman!"
"You’re just upset about what we and Yang Cheng did in the room earlier..."
Before she could finish, Yang Cheng clamped a hand over her mouth.
He looked embarrassed, mainly because the living room was not just occupied by them but also Gao Peng and some servants. This woman brazenly uttering such risqué words without a care for shame.
"Alright, stop arguing. I’ve already decided on this matter. Since you agreed to be my bodyguard, you must follow my orders!"
His expression was stern, leaving no room for Cheng Ruonan to refuse.
Cheng Ruonan felt extremely aggrieved, pushed him away, then twisted her snake-like waist as she went upstairs.
"You’re not going to comfort her?"
Kong Lingwen raised an eyebrow, looking as if she was enjoying the show.
Yang Cheng dared not go comfort her. If he didn’t comfort her, only Cheng Ruonan would be upset. If he went to comfort her and it displeased Kong Lingwen, it might be even worse, so why not just abstain from it altogether?
