Chapter 740: The True Mastermind Behind the Scenes

"Damn it! We’re too late, even if there were clues, they’ve surely been taken."

Kong Lingwen gritted her teeth, feeling a surge of bitterness in her nose.

"Not necessarily, I think, someone as smart as Uncle Kong wouldn’t have left clues out in the open. The person searching was afraid of getting caught, so they might have missed something."

Yang Cheng softly reassured her, then immediately activated his X-ray Vision, scanning the room but found nothing. There were no hidden compartments or secret rooms in the study.

His brow furrowed. Could it really have been searched thoroughly, or did Kong Jingshan never leave behind any clues?

"Lingwen, think carefully, if you were Uncle Kong, where would you have hidden the clues?"

Kong Lingwen frowned in thought, then started searching the drawers and cabinets but found nothing.

Beads of cold sweat appeared on her forehead as she glanced at the bookshelf behind the table and chairs.

"My dad loved reading, and when he had free time, he’d spend a whole day in the study. As a child, I liked to cause mischief, often messing up his books and scribbling on them, and he never had the heart to scold me."

Kong Lingwen was lost in memories, a smile appeared on her lips.

But Yang Cheng’s eyes flashed as he said, "Maybe the clue is hidden in one of the books. If you were Uncle Kong, where would you hide it?"

The bookshelf held too many books. Even if someone came to search the place, they wouldn’t have had the time to go through every single one.

Kong Lingwen pondered for a moment, then walked straight to the bookshelf, precisely extracting a book from a gap. On the surface, it seemed ordinary, but inside it was filled with crooked child-like handwriting and drawings.

She flipped through the pages, tears unintentionally falling down.

"Don’t be sad, Uncle Kong wouldn’t want to see you so upset."

Yang Cheng gently comforted, stepping forward to hold her in his arms.

"This book was my dad’s favorite. When I was little, I thought I was great at drawing and filled every page with my sketches."

Kong Lingwen sighed, continuing to flip through the pages.

Suddenly, Yang Cheng pressed down on her hand, lowered his head to look carefully, and discovered a line of small words. The black text was hidden among the drawings, not very obvious, but his sharp eyes caught the anomaly instantly.

"Found it."

He pointed to the extra words, and Kong Lingwen’s eyes widened as she followed along to read.

"Lingwen, Xiaochen, by the time you read this, I may no longer be in this world. I had long anticipated this day; those people won’t let me go. After I acquired Yang Feng’s company years ago, I discovered he was involved in drug research, but the results were never published, and he suddenly disappeared."

"I found it strange and started investigating secretly. The instigators kidnapped Lingwen to threaten me, so I had no choice but to give up. Two years ago, I was invited to Jile Clubhouse and accidentally discovered their secret. They were trafficking women and children for human experiments."

"That was the first time I felt fear. I knew if I spoke up, I’d disappear like Yang Feng, and the Kong Family would be devoured by these forces, so I kept it hidden."

"Xiaochen, I promised to tell you the truth, but knowing it will bring you greater pressure and threats, even life-threatening risks. If you insist on knowing, turn the page."

Reading this far, Yang Cheng turned the page without hesitation.

"I knew you would choose the truth. You are no coward, but the price of truth is great. I don’t expect you to protect the entire Kong Family, but I hope you can save the lives of the three generations of the Kong Family. That’s my only wish."

"I don’t know much about Yang Feng’s matter, nor do I have enough evidence, but after encountering the Gong Family at Jile Clubhouse, I had a hunch they were the masterminds. There aren’t many in Zhonghai who can threaten the Kong Family, and the Gong Family is among them. However, dealing with the Gong Family won’t be easy; you must plan carefully and don’t act rashly, remember!"

Yang Cheng’s mind buzzed, utterly incredulous.

He had met Gong Jian at the hospital before, who left the impression of being gentle and refined, a warm and approachable figure. It was hard to imagine that Gong Jian could be the mastermind behind all this.

Kong Lingwen looked at the densely packed small words in the book, her beautiful eyes turning red as she clenched her teeth and said, "So it was the Gong Family, no wonder my dad didn’t dare reveal the truth."

"Uncle Kong was only guessing; he wasn’t certain it was the Gong Family. They are just the most suspicious, and we still need to investigate further while resting and recuperating, to unmask the mastermind."

Yang Cheng maintained a calm expression, though his heart was turbulent, feeling a step closer to finding his father, yet devoid of any joy.

If this indeed involved the Gong Family, it meant Gong Jian was a deeply scheming man, and he certainly had numerous skilled subordinates. Chi Ren was not the strongest of them, and he might not be a match against the Gong Family.

Perhaps they’d have to wait until the Sun Golden Wheel was fully crafted before they could truly declare war on the Gong Family.

Kong Lingwen reluctantly nodded, knowing Yang Cheng was right. Confronting the Gong Family now wasn’t wise.

With her father gone, the Kong Family posed no threat anymore, and the Gong Family had no reason to target them again, or it would arouse suspicion instead.

"According to the clues Uncle Kong left, I guess my father might have been involved in that human experiment years ago. Even if he was taken, he may not be dead, just imprisoned. I can’t act impulsively now, or Gong Jian might harm my father when desperate."

Yang Cheng said calmly, contemplating how to make Gong Jian slip up.

"So what should we do now?"

Kong Lingwen asked.

"Put the book back as if we never saw anything. Publicly, we’ll take over Yun Mei, opening a new company. In secret, I’ll investigate the Gong Family. You don’t need to worry, just manage the company well. Make them think we’ve moved on so they’ll lower their guard and reveal themselves."

Yang Cheng knew she was heartbroken. Her father had tragically died, yet she couldn’t expose the murderer and had to pretend ignorance, returning to normal life.

He held her in his arms and softly said, "Lingwen, don’t worry, I’ll avenge Uncle Kong."

"Yes, and you’ll surely find your father too."

Kong Lingwen nodded, as the two embraced to draw warmth from each other.

By the time they left, everyone had been waiting for a while. Seeing Kong Lingwen’s red eyes, they knew she’d been crying.

Everyone knew how much pain Kong Lingwen was in these days. Once Kong Jingshan was buried, she would have to slowly accept reality.

Cars drove away from the Kong Family Villa, arriving at the most scenic cemetery in Zhonghai.
