Chapter 391: In A Crowd Of A Thousand
Luca broke into a light, carefree chuckle.
"Oh, that? Well, there’s no secret to it. I really am observing you."
"Y-You admit it?!" Sigrid’s jaw dropped slightly at his total lack of shame.
"Of course." Luca admitted, settling himself into a much more comfortable position on her back.
He spread his legs slightly wider over her flanks, a movement that caused more of his warmth and skin-pressure to press directly against her lower back.
Sigrid gulped dryly, her hooves stuttering for a fraction of a second before she forced her rhythm back.
"The truth is, Sigrid." Luca continued, resting his hands lightly near her hips. "Saving the world and protecting the demi-human continent...that wasn’t actually my main reason for coming here."
Sigrid blinked, thoroughly caught off guard. "What? It wasn’t?"
Luca shook his head. "The actual reason I came here was to explore and see things I’d never seen before."
His expression grew distant, almost nostalgic.
"You see, back in my old world, I was tired. Bored. I’d seen everything there was to see. Done everything there was to do. Nothing surprised me anymore. Nothing excited me."
"I was just...going through the motions of existence."
He met her eyes.
"But then an opportunity arrived. Someone told me there was another world out there. A world filled with species I’d never encountered. Races I’d never imagined. Creatures beyond anything in my experience. And the moment I heard that—"
A bright grin spread across his face.
"—I jumped at the chance! No hesitation. No second thoughts. This was exactly what I’d been waiting for!"
Sigrid stared at him. "So...saving the continent...protecting us from the humans..."
"That was a side task. Something I did along the way. It was never my primary goal."
She was utterly baffled. Protecting the entire continent was something any other being would consider their life’s greatest achievement.
Their primary purpose. The defining mission of their existence.
But Luca spoke of it as though it were an afterthought.
A chore completed between more interesting activities.
Then again...he had ended that war in a matter of weeks.
A conflict that had consumed generations. And he had resolved it like it was a minor inconvenience.
If you could accomplish something like that so easily...perhaps it really was just a side task.
’He really is a god amongst mortals.’ Sigrid thought, a shiver running down her spine.
"That’s why I was secretly pretty excited about riding a centaur."
Luca admitted, letting out a soft sigh.
"To be honest...I held back at first. I learned about how monumental and sacred it was for another person to sit on a centaur’s back, so even though I was curious, I resisted the urge. But then..."
He offered her a mischievous, playful smirk.
"...you forced me to do it."
Sigrid’s face caught fire. "P-Please do not phrase it like that! It sounds horribly disgraceful!"
Luca waved a dismissive hand.
"The point is, now that I’m here, I want to make the most of it! I want to experience everything. To observe every detail. To take it all in!"
He gestured at her body.
"And your form is genuinely fascinating. The way you move. The way you’re built. The transition between your human half and your equine half.
"It’s all remarkable!"
Sigrid narrowed her eyes, still suspicious. "It’s not that remarkable. Surely you’ve seen horses before. It’s basically the same thing."
Luca reacted as though she had personally insulted him.
"Absolutely not!"
She blinked at his vehemence.
"Horses and centaurs are completely different!" He declared. "Entirely different! I won’t hear such comparisons."
She tilted her head, genuinely curious now. "How so?"
A rather sneaky smirk spread across his features.
"Well, for one thing...horses don’t have massive breasts like yours hanging out in front."
"SIR LUCA! " Sigrid’s arms flew up to cover her chest, her face blazing with mortification.
"Sorry, sorry! I couldn’t resist!" Luca laughed aloud, holding his hands up defensively
He then composed himself, though the amusement still sparkled in his eyes.
"But it really is different. I can’t quite put it into words, but riding a centaur is a completely different experience from riding a horse."
He pointed toward her back, his finger hovering just above her skin.
"When I ride a horse." Luca explained, his tone shifting into genuine fascination. "I see a thick horse-neck and a mane right in front of me."
"But with you...I’m looking at a slender, beautiful human back that looks remarkably delicate."
"Yet, knowing how you swung that heavy broadsword yesterday, I know there’s terrifying, lethal strength hidden beneath that fair skin."
Despite her burning embarrassment, a small, quiet swell of pride bloomed in Sigrid’s chest.
Hearing him compliment her strength, made her heart flutter.
Luca’s hand drifted lower, hovering right over the seamless junction where her human spine joined her equine lower half.
"And right here..." Luca murmured, his eyes full of wonder. "This is where the true magic happens. This is where human skin transitions into silver fur. It’s mesmerizing."
"It honestly makes me want to study your anatomical structure...to see how your spine scales down and how the muscle groups connect."
Sigrid leaned forward slightly, her eyes wary.
"You’re not planning to...dissect me, are you? To tear open my back and examine my spine?"
Luca looked genuinely offended. "Of course not!"
She relaxed slightly.
"At least, not that much. I’d probably just remove your top and observe from the outside."
"SIR LUCA! "
He laughed again at her outraged expression.
"I’m joking! Mostly. Your reactions are simply too entertaining."
’Unbelievable.’ Sigrid thought, her face still burning. ’Absolutely unbelievable. He was so shy before. So reluctant. And now he’s...he’s...’
But even through her flustered indignation, she noticed that he hadn’t actually touched her.
His hands had hovered, but he hadn’t crossed that final boundary.
He was teasing her, yes. Provoking reactions, certainly. But there was a line he wasn’t crossing.
Somehow, that made it both better and worse.
"Anyway." Luca continued, clearly eager To move on before she could grow genuinely angry. "that’s not the only thing I’ve noticed."
He gestured at her legs—at the powerful muscles shifting beneath her silver coat with every graceful step.
"Your legs are absolutely enchanting to watch. The way the muscles move. The way they ripple and flow. I can see the power in them. The potential energy. One moment they’re moving at this calm, steady pace, and the next—"
He snapped his fingers.
"—you could explode into a full gallop! Become a gust of wind racing across the plains!"
"Of course! That is the essence of a centaur!"
Sigrid lifted her chin proudly, her tail flicking.
"The stamina to guard our Queen across vast distances, and the speed to evade any threat. It is our greatest pride!"
"Right." Luca agreed. "But even your stride is fundamentally different from a regular horse."
Sigrid was confused.
"How so? A horse galops, trots, and walks just as we do. In fact, many male races often compare us to wild horses. We do not necessarily take offense to it, but it is hardly something we boast about."
"Because those males are blind." Luca said firmly to her surprise.
He then pointed down at her hooves as they crested a small hill.
"You see Sigrid, a horse moves purely on instinct. Forward, backward, stopping—it’s basic, animalistic locomotion."
"But you? The way you place your hooves, the subtle curve of your legs, the way your hips pivot with every step..."
Luca smiled warmly, his eyes locked onto her lower half.
"You move with an undeniable, delicate elegance. You move like a true lady."
Sigrid froze mid-stride, her heart skipping a beat.
"L-Lady?"
"Yes." Luca said thoughtfully. "You aren’t just walking to get from point A to point B. Instead there’s a soft, dignified sway to your stride that carries real emotion."
"It’s like watching a noblewoman glide across a ballroom floor. Every step carries dignity. Poise. Grace."
He smiled as he added,
"I noticed it yesterday, during our duel. Even when you were pressing forward with everything you had, your footwork was...elegant and beautiful in a way that had nothing to do with combat efficiency."
Sigrid didn’t know what to say. Her face felt warm again, but this time it wasn’t from embarrassment.
He offered her a brilliant, confident smile as he said,
"I’ll tell you what, Sigrid—if someone put a blindfold on me, placed you in a herd of a thousand regular horses, and let me watch only the legs...I would identify you in three seconds flat."
Sigrid let out a soft, breathless laugh, looking away.
"You’re joking, Sir Luca. Even I cannot distinguish my own lower body from a standard silver mare."
"I’m not joking." Luca insisted softly. "Every single step you take carries a natural, unshakeable dignity. It says that no matter how terrible the world gets, no matter what hardship you face, you will always stand tall."
His voice dropped even lower.
"And it’s not just horses. Even among other centaurs...I think I could find you. In a crowd of a thousand, I would know which one was you."
"Because none of them would move quite the way you do. None of them would carry themselves with that same quiet, unshakeable dignity."
Sigrid felt something strange bloom in her chest. A warmth that spread outward, slow and gentle, like honey poured into tea.
’He could find me...’
’In a crowd of a thousand. He would know it was me...’
The way he said it...it was almost as if she were special.
As if there were some invisible thread connecting them, some bond that transcended physical form.
’Stop it.’ She scolded herself, shaking her head sharply. ’Stop thinking like that. He was talking about your legs. Your walking style. Nothing more! Don’t read into things that aren’t there.’
But even as she thought it, she couldn’t quite suppress the small, secret warmth that had taken root in her heart.
