Chapter 618: Thinking Together

For the word "cold fusion”, it is an awkward proposition in academia, because it is often not an interesting thing to accompany.

This concept first appeared in the 1920s, probably, when two German chemists, Pennis and Peters, proposed the idea of a nuclear fusion reaction at room temperature in 1926. By passing hydrogen through heated palladium asbestos, they discovered helium through the material and determined that a fusion reaction had occurred and published the results in Nature.

As soon as the paper appeared, it aroused considerable sensation, but was soon criticized by Rutherford, then president of the Royal Society of England. And in fact, in the subsequent experiment, neither of them was able to repeat the experiment, and eventually the whole incident was identified as an oulon, ending with the withdrawal of Nature.

By the end of the '80s, it was probably the highest in the entire study of cold fusion. At a press conference at Utah University in Salt Lake City, Utah, Fleichmann and Ponce unveiled their latest research. That is, sustained nuclear fusion is achieved on palladium electrodes with a special heavy water electrode device at room temperature.

This discovery broke through the traditional notion that nuclear fusion could only take place at hundreds of millions of degrees, and gave new light to controllable fusion researchers who were slow to deliver on their promises. The surge generated by this sensational effect quickly swept across North America and the world, including more than dozens of research institutions such as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Princeton PPPL Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and even IBM's private lab, all involved in this race to chase new energy sources, which the media called "the sun in the tube”.

However, the scenario is not long, from the US nuclear giant signing a cooperation R&D agreement with the experimental team of the University of Utah to the Italian Ministry of Science and Research emphasizing the priority given to "cold fusion research", the Belgian Office of the Secretary of State for Scientific Research has dedicated a meeting of experts, and the University of Moscow of the USSR has mobilized a first-class research team to prepare for the full spread of cold fusion research… and then to the final cooling, not even a year.

And this drama around the world completely consumes the enthusiasm of academia for cold fusion. So far, while a fairly small scientific team has persevered in this area, research on thermonuclear fusion has once been half-dead, let alone overwhelmingly cold fusion.

The current attitude of the academic community as a whole is to set aside controversy, not to deny it completely, but essentially not to hold any hope.

Is there a seemingly viable technology route…

There are still things to say.

Like "acoustic fusion.”

Though the word doesn't sound very reliable.

Leaving the scene of the briefing, Sheng Xianfu did not go to the ark, but came to the Institute of Acoustics of Jinling University.

Around the end of the 1980s, the world had studied cold-fusion, and naturally China, which had been keeping a close eye on developments in international academia, was no exception. For example, the research team led by Professor Chen Weizhong of the Golden Institute of Sound Sciences once did the subject of "acoustic fusion”, but unfortunately ended up failing.

It is now concluded that, although it cannot be fused, it can emit light.

It is uncertain why the light will shine.

Before completing the blueprint in his mind, he needs a little help from his predecessor's research…

“Cold Nuclear Fusion Experimental Data over 30 years ago?” After hearing Sheng Xianfu explain his intention, Professor Chen Weizhong suddenly laughed and shook his head, "You are wasting your time. ”

“How do I know if I don't try?” Sheng Xianfu tried to persuade the elderly.

“Try it? I spent 10 years trying to prove that this path was impossible, not for you kids to try again,” Chen Weizhong laughed with a bit of ridicule and continued, "I wasted half of my money on acoustics, finally got a pile of waste paper, now let you waste a lot of good time, waste the resources of the country to do this experiment? My conscience can't pass. ”

As you can see, the old professor has been completely discouraged by the study of acoustic fusion.

But it is true that a decade of life has been wasted on an impassable path. It was not only his own scientific career, the expectations of the Institute, but also those of the students and researchers who followed him in the study.

……

“I don't think it's scrap paper,” he said seriously, staring at the old professor's turbid pupils, "but it hasn't done what it was supposed to do. ”

After staring at Sheng Xianfu for a while, the old professor didn't say anything, slowly stood up and left the office.

About five minutes later, the old man walked in through the door with a wrinkly note.

“I didn't have much money for the acoustics research institute. I was hoping to make some progress on this project... but it failed in the end,” Frankly put this data in Sheng Xianfu's hands. Professor Chen Weizhong looked at Sheng Xianfu and continued, “If this thing can help you a little, you can use it. ”

If it really helps...

He thinks he'll feel a little better.

Taking this notebook with experimental data, Sheng Xianfuzheng nodded: "I will use it properly. ”

……

After obtaining the experimental data, Sheng Xianfu returned to the Jinling Institute of Higher Studies and began to draw the blueprint in his heart.

Once in the southwest, he had been studying plasma physics and was more engineering-oriented than theory. Now suddenly to study the theoretical direction, he obviously felt a lot of energy from it.

Because he hasn't touched a lot of things in a long time, he's even forgotten now, so in addition to reading the literature, there are places where he even has to turn to reference books to make theoretical deductions.

Good thing, however, these difficulties can be overcome.

It took him ten days to complete his paper on "Technological Feasibility of Achieving a Fusion Reaction at Relatively Low Temperatures" while studying the state of drilling and finding the office of the ark with this paper.

When he arrived at the office, the ark was thinking about something against the draft paper on the table.

Knocked gently on the door, Sheng Xianfu said.

“I'm coming. ”

Without stopping the pen, the ark simply asked, "Well, what can I do for you? ”

“On the issue of controllable fusion miniaturization, I have a little bit of other thoughts,” I read the paper in my hand, and when I was about to go forward and hand it over to the Ark, Sheng Xianfu was a little confused.

“Can't you show me? ”

“That's not true," Sheng Xianfu laughed embarrassingly and finally made up his mind to put the paper on his desk, "that's the one... don't laugh at me after you read it. ”

“How? ”

Paused the pen in his hand, the ark picked up the paper from the table and read it carefully in a row.

Time goes by.

Standing at his desk, he waited for the result and took a deep breath for the tenth time.

And that's when the Ark finally finished his paper and laughed.

“You have a lot of imagination. ”

A bitter smile appeared on the rich face of the Constitution.

Didn't you say you wouldn't laugh at me?

He coughed softly and explained.

“I think it's rich, too. Don't take it seriously. It's just my crazy thought--”

“You don't have to admit mistakes. Academic discussions should not presuppose the right premise. We all have the possibility of making mistakes in front of the truth, and we all have the right possibility." Interrupting his words, the Ark placed the paper gently on the table, watching him continue to say, “Besides, this time we thought together. ”
