Chapter 229: Mechanical Spider, Amazing Ability
She had originally planned to go to Dungeon 5, but a call from Zachary Pierce made Faye Yardley change her plans for the time being.
Her last trip to Dungeon 3 hadn’t gone particularly smoothly, and it had been fraught with danger.
Speaking of which, she still hadn’t figured out what to do with the two different virus vials she had obtained.
’Just keeping them stored away seems like a bit of a waste.’
Faye Yardley didn’t mind going to Dungeon 3. Zachary Pierce was hoping to set out as soon as possible; based on his demeanor, he seemed to have the urge to enter the dungeon right then and there.
’So, do we need to go to the points shop to redeem any necessities?’
Since she had agreed, Faye Yardley adjusted her plans accordingly.
In her view, the preparations hadn’t really changed much: just practical clothes underneath the Self-cleaning Robe.
It was a shame there wasn’t a self-cleaning hat to protect her head. If she could wear a transparent one over her hair, it would stay clean and free from dust and blood.
Upon accepting the Red Envelope from Zachary Pierce, Faye Yardley discovered a very interesting little gadget inside: a mechanical scout spider.
’Sure enough, everyone has their own unique windfalls.’
The mechanical spider was only the size of an adult’s thumbnail. Faye Yardley touched it and was stung, after which the system notified her that it was bound and she could now share the spider’s vision.
Sharing the mechanical spider’s vision was a bizarre sensation; it was as if everything had suddenly become gigantic.
It took Faye Yardley a good while to get used to it.
’I wonder what its range is?’
Curious, Faye Yardley took the spider outside and tossed it into the sea. ’It probably won’t be easily damaged by the seawater,’ she thought.
She maintained the shared vision, so even as she stood on the raft, her eyes were filled with the scenery of the ocean depths.
’Have to admit, this mechanical spider is really useful. Not only is it waterproof, but it also has some combat and escape capabilities.’
It fought what it could beat and nimbly dodged what it couldn’t.
’As expected of a scout-type gadget.’
The gadget was surprisingly practical. It wasn’t as if she lost the ability to command it just because it was far away; when the thought to return surfaced in Faye Yardley’s mind, the mechanical spider in the sea stopped moving and began to float toward the surface.
’I don’t know if it’s because my raft level is high and has hidden Attributes, or if this patch of sea is just calmer, but either way, I haven’t run into any contaminated Sea Monsters.’
"Faye...? Are you going into the sea?"
Faye Yardley shook her head. "No. Why aren’t you getting more rest? You can relax here. There shouldn’t be any major problems."
Cole Kensington asked bluntly, "What about tomorrow? Are you going out?"
Puzzled, Faye Yardley asked, "Why do you ask all of a sudden?"
"Take me with you when you go out. I get the feeling you have something to do. You can leave it to me."
Faye paused for a moment before replying, "You don’t have to be so tense. Here... while there is danger, it’s nothing I can’t handle. In fact, I can basically solve most problems myself. Your body needs to recover. Don’t let any old wounds flare up."
"I’ve had the medicine. I’m already healed."
"This fast?!"
’Even if that was an Inner Injury Holy Medicine, it shouldn’t be powerful enough to heal someone instantly, right? After all, others have used it before. It was effective, but it never worked this fast.’
’How long has it been since I gave it to him? Has he really recovered completely in just a few short hours?’
’His constitution is just too good.’
Faye Yardley then said, "Since you say you’re all better, let’s go over to that open space and have a sparring match. Understanding each other’s combat abilities will help us coordinate better when we face enemies."
Cupping his fists, Cole Kensington’s expression turned serious and focused. "Please, give me your guidance!"
Once they began, Faye Yardley felt a frustrating sense of suppression, as if he was countering her every move.
’His combat effectiveness doesn’t seem to stem directly from his own Combat Power.’
’It’s like he can perfectly replicate my every move.’
As the fight went on, Faye Yardley got the strange feeling she was sparring with herself.
’Wait, how does he know all my moves?’
’He even knows the moves that come from my own personal habits. This is getting ridiculous.’
’I knew a slave worth 200,000 Gold Coins wouldn’t be ordinary, but this is something else entirely.’
’So is he really from the Human Race?’
’Is his Talent Skill ’Mimicry’ or ’Aptitude’?’
"Faye... you shouldn’t have so many distracting thoughts during a fight."
"My apologies. Let’s stop here." Faye Yardley looked at Cole Kensington with a complicated expression. "Did you just activate your Talent?"
Talent?
Cole Kensington, however, looked stunned. Then, he pointed at Faye Yardley’s shadow, cast by the solar-powered lamp, and stepped onto it.
Faye Yardley then watched, wide-eyed, as his entire body merged into her shadow.
Her shadow then began to move with a mind of its own, performing actions completely different from hers.
"You can control my shadow?!"
"Yes. Although I’m from the Human Race, my mother was one of the Shadow-kin. I inherited a little of her Talent as a Shadow-kin."
Faye Yardley felt incredibly conflicted. ’Am I just that lucky, or does Nora Nash have an exceptionally sharp eye?!’
"Come on out. Does merging with my shadow affect you in any way?"
Cole Kensington emerged from the shadow, his own form slowly reappearing. He shook his head. "I don’t know. This is my first time entering someone else’s shadow."
"Oh. Then try not to do it again in the future. If there are any side effects, neither of us will know how to handle them."
Cole Kensington opened his mouth, wanting to say something but not knowing what. A wave of emotion washed over him—he was touched.
"By the way, I’m entering a Dungeon tomorrow. It wouldn’t be right to bring you along, but I wanted to let you know so you don’t worry."
"I can go into the Dungeon with you."
Faye Yardley shook her head and patted his shoulder. "My team is already used to working together. Randomly swapping out a member would be disrespectful to my teammates."
"I can merge into your shadow and go with you that way."
"Have you already forgotten what I just said? Since this is the first time you’ve done this, there are bound to be too many unknowns. We shouldn’t take the risk."
But Cole Kensington was insistent. His entire purpose was to protect her. ’A Dungeon... the name alone tells you it isn’t a safe place.’
"Alright, alright, go back and get some rest. We’ll talk about it tomorrow." Faye figured she could just activate the Invitation Card from inside her room when the time came.
As they spoke, the mechanical spider climbed out of the sea and crawled up Goliath’s leg.
Bending down to pick up the mechanical spider, Faye Yardley gave Cole Kensington a wave and headed back to her room.
As she entered her room, she glanced up at the crescent moon surrounded by stars. It was hard to say which shone brighter. Tonight would likely be a sleepless night for most people.
