Chapter 262 - 251: I Plan to Divorce Him 2
Naomi Shaw was still talking on the other end of the line, but Byron had already hung up.
’That sister of his only knew how to cause trouble.’
Georgia Thorne didn’t have much to pack, just a few clothes.
She handed the signed divorce papers to Byron. "I’ve already signed them."
Byron turned his head, glanced at the papers, and shot up from the sofa. "You’re moving out. Is it because of my sister?"
"I know you can’t stand my sister. If you don’t want to see her, I promise I’ll make sure you never have to see her again!"
"It’s not that!" Georgia denied softly. "I just feel bad about imposing on you any longer!"
Byron was speechless.
’Impose? They were family, related by blood.’
After all this time, Georgia still treated them like outsiders, shutting them out of her heart.
"Where’s the apartment you rented? I’ll take you there!" Byron seemed resigned as he bent down to take Georgia’s luggage, but she dodged him. "There’s no need. I can get there myself!"
Tugging her suitcase, Georgia left alone.
The doorbell rang not long after Georgia left.
Byron hurried to the door, thinking Georgia had forgotten something, but it was Naomi who stood there.
When Naomi heard Georgia was moving out, she was so anxious she hadn’t slept all night.
She had rushed over. "Where’s Georgia?"
"She’s already gone. You didn’t run into her on your way?"
Naomi shook her head. She had been in too much of a hurry on the way over to notice anyone on the side of the road.
She started to run out to find Georgia, but Byron stopped her. "Don’t go. Even if you caught up, do you think you could convince her to stay?"
Naomi was speechless. ’Probably not.’
Byron said nothing, pinching the bridge of his nose. ’Georgia is just as stubborn as her sister.’
’Once she makes up her mind, no one can change it.’
Georgia had asked Nancy Hughes to help her find the apartment she was renting. The two of them had looked at several places before finally settling on one.
The location was decent and close to Archetype Company, only a twenty-minute walk away. The price was a little steep, though—1,200 a month.
Georgia didn’t want anyone else to know she had moved out, so she made Nancy swear to secrecy.
Nancy was with Dylan Heston, who was friends with Elliot Sheridan, so Georgia was worried the news would get back to him.
When Nancy was helping her find an apartment, she never imagined things would escalate to the point of divorce for Georgia and Elliot.
When Georgia arrived, Nancy was already waiting for her at the apartment.
It was a small one-room apartment. The room was tiny, but it had everything, perfect for a single person.
They started by cleaning the room. As she watched Georgia wipe down a table, Nancy asked, "What if he refuses to sign?"
"Then we’ll take it to court."
Nancy was speechless.
Nancy’s chest tightened with frustration. "Any other woman who managed to marry a rich and powerful man like Elliot Sheridan would have to be an absolute idiot to want a divorce! Georgia, tell me, are you really that foolish?"
"I don’t care about his money or power. Besides, what’s the use of any of that? You can’t take it with you," Georgia said calmly, putting away the cleaning rag to start cooking.
"Hey, hey, hey, don’t talk about dying! Isn’t money what everyone’s after in this world?"
Since it was Georgia’s first night in the new place, Nancy was too worried to leave her alone and decided to stay over.
When Georgia came out of the shower, Nancy had already taken up most of the twin bed. Georgia frowned. "Are you really not going home tonight?"
"Nope! I’m staying here to keep you company tonight!" Nancy declared boisterously. "Or what, you’re too good to sleep next to me?"
Nancy shot her a look that was a clear threat: ’Just you try saying you have a problem with it.’
Georgia sat on the edge of the bed. "I wouldn’t dare! I’m just worried your man will get anxious when he can’t find you tonight."
At the mention of Dylan Heston, Nancy’s face flushed red.
’Dylan Heston was the same type of man as Elliot Sheridan. Men that inscrutable are always the most frightening.’
Nancy’s spirits drooped for a moment, but then she puffed out her chest with renewed bravado. "This gal isn’t afraid of him! Tonight, it’s just us sisters!"
In truth, it had been a very long time since the two of them had slept in the same room.
"Time flies so fast. I really miss our school days," Nancy said, staring at the ceiling, suddenly overcome with emotion as she thought about the past.
Georgia couldn’t sleep either. "We really were happy back then."
’Back then, she didn’t have so many worries. She hadn’t truly let Elliot into her heart yet.’
Georgia and Nancy had been classmates. As they reminisced, Nancy sighed. "In the blink of an eye, it’s been almost six months since graduation!"
Georgia hummed in agreement. After that, Nancy fell silent, apparently asleep.
The bed really was small, their bodies pressed up against each other.
She turned over, her back to Nancy, and closed her eyes.
Georgia still couldn’t fall asleep. She lay perfectly still, afraid of waking Nancy.
Around midnight, unable to bear it any longer, she got up, rummaged through her bag for her medicine, and turned on a light to boil some water.
Hearing the noise, Nancy sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Georgia, what are you doing?"
"Just getting a drink of water. Go back to sleep."
After the water boiled, she let it cool for a moment before taking her medicine.
Then she got back into bed and slept until dawn.
Over the weekend, besides unpacking at home, Georgia also went to the supermarket to buy everything she needed.
On their way back, Nancy got a call from Dylan Heston.
"Uh... he’s a little mad, so I’m going to head back now!"
In the end, Nancy was still afraid of making Dylan angry, so she hurried home as soon as they got back to the apartment.
On Monday, as Georgia arrived at the entrance to her company, Kai spotted her. He was about to call out when he saw another figure stride toward her first.
The joyful look on his face instantly soured, because the man walking toward Georgia was their CEO.
There weren’t many people at the company entrance at that moment, only seven or eight.
Kai was one of them, and he watched with his own eyes as Elliot Sheridan grabbed Georgia’s arm. She struggled, but the man simply picked her up and bundled her into a car.
It all happened so fast. Before the stunned onlookers could even react, the car sped away.
Georgia kept her head down, so no one recognized her.
It took a long moment for the onlookers to process what had just happened, none of them able to believe their eyes. "That was the CEO just now, wasn’t it?"
"Who was that woman? Does she work here? Why have I never seen her before?"
"I don’t know. I’ve never even heard anyone use the CEO’s first name before!"
Kai’s expression was grim. He was strangely relieved that no one had recognized Georgia, but at the same time, his anxiety spiked.
’How could Georgia possibly know the CEO?’
Inside the car, Georgia, who had been forced into the vehicle by Elliot, stared out the window.
Her heart hammered against her ribs. Sensing the man beside her growing angrier by the second, she stole a glance at the dashboard. The needle was slowly climbing toward 150 and showed no signs of stopping.
The farther they drove, the more deserted the highway became. Georgia gripped the seat cushion beneath her.
The faster they went, the more dizzy and nauseous she felt.
’She thought she might be carsick.’
Elliot was consumed by rage. His knuckles were white on the steering wheel, his jaw was clenched, and his sharp eyes were fixed on the road ahead.
On the empty highway, Georgia’s face grew paler and paler until she couldn’t hold it in any longer and screamed, "Stop the car! Stop the car! STOP!"
Elliot ignored her and drove on for a while longer before slamming on the brakes, catching Georgia completely off guard.
Georgia was thrown forward, her insides lurching violently.
She unbuckled her seatbelt, threw open the door, and scrambled out, but her legs gave way and she collapsed onto the pavement.
Elliot got out of the car right behind her and found her sitting on the ground, vomiting.
She hadn’t eaten anything that morning, so all she could do was retch up bile.
After she was done, her eyes were red-rimmed and watery, as if she had just had a hard cry. She lifted her head and glared fiercely at the man beside her. "Are you insane?!"
"Yes, I’m insane! And you’re the one who drove me crazy!" Elliot furiously kicked the tire of the car. "I told you I wouldn’t agree to a divorce, yet you still had Byron deliver the papers!"
The recent days of high-pressure work, on top of a business dinner with excessive drinking that night, had aggravated his stomach problems.
He had thought it was just a normal flare-up and had endured the sharp, twisting pain in his stomach until he got back to his apartment, where he suddenly started vomiting blood.
Owen Sawyer knew at a glance that something was seriously wrong and rushed him to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Fortunately, they got him there in time, and he was out of danger.
Before Elliot lost consciousness, he had ordered Owen not to tell his family—and that included Georgia.
Owen had no choice but to cover for him, telling anyone who asked that Elliot was away on a business trip.
Elliot recuperated in the hospital for two days and regained some of his strength.
His stomach condition required long-term management; it wasn’t something that could be fixed overnight.
This morning, when Owen came to deliver his breakfast, Elliot noticed how unnaturally his assistant was acting and grew suspicious.
One icy glare from Elliot was all it took. Owen didn’t dare hide the truth any longer and immediately handed over the divorce papers that Byron Shaw had personally delivered.
Elliot’s face went livid. He ripped the IV needle from the back of his hand and threw off the covers, ignoring Owen’s protests.
"What are you gawking at? Get my clothes!"
Owen sighed. As if he had anticipated this exact scenario, he had already gone to Elliot’s apartment that morning to pick up a change of clothes for him.
Elliot changed his clothes and rushed to the company, leading to the dramatic scene everyone had witnessed.
’She had actually sent the divorce papers.’ When he saw her signature on the designated line, his stomach had twisted into another painful knot of rage.
’Excellent. She always knew exactly where to twist the knife.’
After vomiting, Georgia got to her feet and brushed the dust from her clothes.
Her tone was flat. "Good. You’ve seen them. Now sign them."
Elliot barked, glaring at her. "A divorce? Don’t even think about it in this lifetime!"
He had torn those divorce papers to shreds the moment he saw her signature.
Georgia was silent.
Georgia stared at him, her heart aching. After a long moment, she whispered, "Why bother?"
Elliot’s face grew even darker. He grabbed Georgia’s hand and pulled her back into the car. This time, she didn’t struggle.
