Chapter 223 - 212: The One at Home Is Strict, I’m Quitting Drinking (1)
She showed a young woman’s bashfulness, a stark contrast to a soldier’s forthrightness.
Perhaps because she was their only treasured daughter, Iris Sinclair had been thoroughly spoiled.
Elliot Sheridan came out of the study and saw Georgia Thorne sitting on the sofa, lost in thought.
He glanced at the screen, which was showing a close-up of Justin Sullivan and Iris Sinclair’s faces.
Frowning, he sat down beside Georgia, wrapped an arm around her shoulders, and said with a hint of jealousy, "What’s wrong? Upset to see them getting engaged?"
"Of course not!" Georgia denied.
Elliot snorted. He hadn’t forgotten that Georgia once had a crush on Justin Sullivan.
Blue, who was lying at their feet, wagged his tail and suddenly let out a MEOW at Elliot.
It was clearly trying to curry favor with Elliot, but the sound was just grating to his ears.
He gave Blue a light kick. That man, Justin Sullivan, had been the one to give Georgia the cat.
Blue thought Elliot was playing and stretched out its paws to bat at his cotton slippers.
It really wasn’t as Elliot said. She wasn’t particularly shocked.
The only thing she felt was that it was a shame.
Realizing the man beside her was jealous, Georgia hurriedly changed the channel to a reality TV show.
Georgia reached out and hugged Elliot, craning her neck to look at him. "I’m really not upset. I don’t even like him anymore!"
"But you used to!" Elliot retorted, cutting straight to the point.
’Sigh, this man always loved to dredge up the past with her.’
"I like you more now!" Georgia hugged him tightly, looking at his ashen face and wishing she could just tackle him to the ground. "Honey, please don’t be jealous!"
After teasing Elliot for a while, Georgia honestly shared what was on her mind. "I just feel bad for Selena!"
Selena Sheridan was stubborn. Once she set her sights on someone, she wouldn’t change her mind.
’I wonder what she’s thinking now that she’s seen the news.’
"The younger generation has their own destiny. Why are you worrying so much?"
"..."
Justin Sullivan was getting engaged to the daughter of a distinguished military family, so of course, the pomp and circumstance were indispensable.
The banquet was held in a five-star hotel, with guests invited from all over.
Georgia happened to mention the matter to Selena Sheridan, who responded with an extremely cold "Oh," and nothing more.
As Hayley Sullivan’s stepdaughter, Georgia naturally had to attend with the Thorne Family.
Elliot Sheridan, on the other hand, was attending as a business associate.
If it weren’t for Georgia, Elliot wouldn’t have shown up at all.
The banquet began. Melodious music played as guests mingled in the grand hall, their glasses clinking.
Georgia wasn’t good at socializing, so she sat obediently to the side.
Amanda Thorne sneered. "Justin Sullivan isn’t the one marrying you. Are you furious?"
Georgia just smiled. She had no idea where Amanda was sensing any fury from her.
She was clearly quite calm.
For Justin Sullivan’s engagement today, the Sullivan Family had specially brought Silas Sullivan out from the hospital.
He had been meticulously dressed in a neat suit and bow tie, making him look much more spirited.
He sat in a wheelchair, with Jane Jennings standing by his side.
Georgia took a sip of water when a sudden commotion erupted at the entrance.
All eyes turned to see Elliot Sheridan enter with his secretary.
Georgia watched him stride toward Justin Sullivan, his gaze shifting to her along the way.
Their eyes met across the moderate distance. It was too late for Georgia to look away even if she wanted to.
She blushed and lowered her head. ’Someone said this morning he wouldn’t come to the engagement party, yet here he is.’
Elliot merely flicked his gaze past Georgia, not letting it linger, before turning to congratulate Justin Sullivan.
"Congratulations, President Sullivan."
"Thank you," Justin Sullivan replied, his expression neutral.
A short while later, once most of the guests had arrived, the engagement party officially began.
Justin Sullivan and his fiancée, Iris Sinclair, stood in the center, smiling sweetly.
Georgia was seated at the Sullivan family’s table, with Amanda Thorne and Lynn Thorne beside her.
Justin Sullivan led Iris Sinclair over to make a toast, politely going from person to person.
When they reached Georgia, she casually picked up the glass in front of her and stood up.
But for some reason, the juice in front of her had been replaced with hard liquor.
Georgia frowned. Beside her, Amanda Thorne was smiling, enjoying the show.
’I remember I went to the restroom earlier,’ she thought. ’And right after I got back, I ran into Justin and the others coming to toast.’
Georgia was in a bind. Before she left today, Elliot had warned her not to drink.
Her eyes scanned the crowd and immediately found Elliot. His gaze met hers, warning her not to drink.
Holding the glass, she was stuck. To drink or not to drink.
Just as she was hesitating, Justin Sullivan reached out and took the glass from her hand. "I’ll drink this for Georgia."
Everyone was stunned. Logically, if Justin was going to take a drink for someone, it should have been for his fiancée, Iris Sinclair. Why was it Georgia instead?
The smile on Amanda Thorne’s face grew wider as she raised an eyebrow and looked at Iris Sinclair, who was standing beside Justin.
Iris Sinclair had met Amanda Thorne a couple of times before and had heard that there was a woman in Justin’s heart who was off-limits.
She had originally assumed it was Justin’s ex-girlfriend. She was shocked only after Amanda mentioned Georgia Thorne’s name.
Georgia Thorne... but she was Justin Sullivan’s niece.
She had been skeptical of what Amanda said, but that was until Justin took the drink for Georgia.
Iris felt as if she had been slapped hard in public. Her expression turned sour, but she had to force herself to endure it to save face.
She immediately began sizing up the woman before her. ’She’s not even that good-looking!’
Justin Sullivan took Georgia’s drink and downed it in one gulp.
Afterwards, he said, "Thanks."
His voice was very soft, but Georgia heard it.
Georgia felt completely at ease about Justin’s help.
As they passed by Georgia, whether intentionally or not, Iris Sinclair let out a cry. Her hand trembled, and the entire contents of her glass spilled onto Georgia.
"I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry..." Iris immediately bent down to apologize to Georgia.
"It’s fine! I can get it myself!"
Georgia took a napkin and tried to wipe her dress. It had only been a small wet patch, but with Iris’s dabbing, the damp area spread.
Georgia sighed helplessly. ’This Miss Sinclair probably has it out for me,’ she thought.
Anyone could see it was intentional.
Justin Sullivan’s face tightened. He forcefully pulled Iris’s hand away and said angrily, "That’s enough!"
Iris was completely astonished. In all the time she had known Justin, she had never seen him lose his temper.
He had always been gentle and polite. That was what Iris admired about him, and it was why she had agreed to the engagement.
"Jean!" Hayley Sullivan hurriedly gave him a push, reminding him in a low voice.
’Losing his head over Georgia! He must be mad!’
The atmosphere instantly grew awkward as everyone’s eyes turned toward them.
They were too far away to hear what was being said, so they didn’t know what was going on.
Fortunately, this table consisted only of the Sullivan family’s own members.
Justin Sullivan came back to his senses, but what was done could not be undone.
Although Iris came from a distinguished military family, she had been sheltered her whole life and couldn’t withstand the slightest hardship.
Justin’s two words were all it took to make her eyes redden as she looked at him pitifully.
"Jean," Iris also called his name softly.
Justin pinched the bridge of his nose. "Sorry."
"I’m sorry, Iris has always been a bit clumsy. I apologize on her behalf."
"It’s fine."
Even though she knew Iris had spilled the drink on her intentionally, Georgia didn’t get angry.
’There was nothing to get angry about, anyway,’ she thought, feeling a prickling on her back. ’After all, a certain someone behind me is staring at me.’
Iris stepped forward, feigning innocence, her face full of apology. "I’m really so sorry."
"It’s fine!" Georgia stood up. "I’m just going to the restroom."
The little incident ended with Georgia’s departure.
Georgia took off her jacket. Thankfully, she was wearing two layers.
The garment was soaked and reeked of alcohol, making it unwearable.
After cleaning the hem of her skirt, she went out.
As she crossed the hall, she happened to see Justin Sullivan and Elliot Sheridan standing together.
From a short distance away, she saw Elliot place a full wine glass on a table.
The corners of his lips tilted up slightly. "Apologies. The one at home keeps a tight rein on me. I’m quitting drinking."
Georgia was so shocked she could barely breathe. ’Why would he suddenly say something like that?’
’Don’t tell me he’s planning to announce our relationship?’
Everyone who heard Elliot speak was completely stunned.
Elliot Sheridan was actually married?
He got married quietly, without any news leaking out. They didn’t even know who his wife was.
A while ago, everyone had been speculating wildly about Elliot’s marriage. No wonder he had called off his engagement to Joanne Donovan.
Georgia’s heart pounded, terrified that Elliot would walk right over, grab her, and make her admit it.
In reality, Elliot had only indirectly announced that he was a married man. As for who his wife was, no one could tell.
Justin Sullivan’s expression was incredibly grim. He knew as clear as day who Elliot was talking about.
You could say that Elliot’s words were aimed specifically at Justin Sullivan.
Justin took a sip of wine. "Then, congratulations to us both."
Elliot’s eyes crinkled as he gave a faint smile.
Elliot’s announcement that he was married broke the hearts of who knows how many unmarried young women.
In fact, many of the young ladies attending the banquet had come specifically for Elliot.
Hearing Elliot personally admit he was married, none of them could quite process it.
Georgia sat in her seat, secretly stealing glances at the man sitting not far away.
Getting married was a big deal, and quite a few men wanted to go up and chat with him. Elliot seemed to be in a fairly good mood and exchanged a few pleasantries, but he truly didn’t touch a single drop of alcohol.
"Auntie, why do you keep looking at that uncle over there?"
Georgia was staring intently when Leah Sutton, who had just returned from a stroll, asked curiously.
"Don’t be silly, I wasn’t looking!" Georgia’s heart skipped a beat. She immediately clapped a hand over Leah’s mouth while averting her own gaze.
Amanda Thorne and Lynn Thorne were discussing something and didn’t seem to have heard what Leah said.
With her mouth covered, Leah could only make pitiful muffled sounds, her face turning red.
Georgia breathed a sigh of relief and crouched down to warn the little one, "Don’t talk nonsense, you hear?"
Leah Sutton looked innocent. How was she talking nonsense?
Sitting in her chair, she pouted and grumbled under her breath, "Auntie, you’re a liar. You’ve been staring at that uncle over there the whole time!"
