Chapter 139: A Bite on His Neck
"Put me down."
Wren Sutton angrily kept her voice down, not wanting to disturb the patients resting in the other rooms.
Adrian Lancaster paid her no mind, impassive as he continued to walk forward, still carrying her.

They were fast approaching the elevators, but no matter what Wren said, Adrian didnât react.
In a fit of desperation, she bit down on his neck.
Adrian Lancasterâs brow furrowed in pain. He hadnât expected Wren Sutton to actually dare to bite him. âThis woman... He had spoiled her so much sheâd become completely lawless, always pushing her luck.â
"Wren Sutton, what are you, a dog?!"
Wren Sutton looked up, her eyes defiantly meeting Adrian Lancasterâs. She didnât feel the least bit sorry.
âHeâd forced her to do it. She wasnât to blame.â
"Just put me down."
Adrian Lancaster wasnât falling for it, his gaze sharp and cold.
Seeing that he still wouldnât let go, Wren steeled her heart in defiance and bit down hard again in the exact same spot. The bite mark was now impossible to miss.
Adrian Lancaster: "..."
It would be a lie to say it didnât hurt, but his expression remained unchanged. âHeâd like to see what other tricks Wren Sutton had up her sleeve.â
Wren felt a pang of guilt. She snuck a glance at Adrian Lancaster and saw his cold expression; he acted as if he couldnât feel a thing.
"Having fun?" The manâs voice came from above her, spoken through clenched teeth. "My dear Mrs. Lancaster."
This wasnât going as sheâd imagined. Wrenâs head throbbed with frustration. "You..."
A normal person would have instinctively let go if someone bit their neck, but not only did Adrian refuse to loosen his grip, he actually held her tighter.
Wren couldnât understand what he was thinking. âDoes his neck not hurt at all?â
Adrian saw right through her. He let out a cold snort. "If you think thatâll make me put you down, youâre far too naive."
Wren was mentally exhausted, overcome by a deep sense of helplessness. "Then what will it take for you to let me go?"
"Whatâs so great about this hospital?" Adrianâs tone was cold and hard. "That girl, Zoey... even her own parents donât care about her. Why do you have to be so conscientious? Youâre just making trouble for yourself."
Wrenâs thoughts were a tangled mess. She couldnât explain it; she just couldnât bear the thought of abandoning Zoey. "You wouldnât understand."
Adrian almost laughed in exasperation. "Since you love taking care of children so much, why donât we go home tonight and focus on making one of our own. Once we have kids, you can stay home and take good care of them."
Wren flushed, her embarrassment turning to fury. "Who wants to have your children? In your dreams!"
Adrian lowered his gaze, his eyes burning into hers. "Youâre my wife. If youâre not going to have my children, who are you going to have them for?"
Wren was in no mood to argue with him about it. She turned her head, avoiding his gaze.
Just then, the elevator arrived at their floor, and the doors slowly slid open.
Adrian carried Wren inside.
At this point, Wren was out of options. She decided she had no choice but to back down and tell him the truth.
"Zoey has leukemia. Sheâs just a little girl. Can you really bear to leave her in the hospital to fend for herself?"
"Adrian, Iâm begging you, please let me stay and take care of Zoey. My heart just breaks for her."
Adrianâs brow furrowed. "Leukemia?"
He hadnât realized the little girl was that sick. âNo wonder her parents havenât shown their faces.â
Wren nodded. "The doctor told me himself. Zoey doesnât know yet."
Adrian fell silent, lost in thought.
Wren didnât disturb him, waiting quietly.
A moment later, with a DING, the elevator reached the ground floor.
Adrian carried Wren out.
When Wren saw he hadnât changed his mind, she panicked. The moment they stepped out of the emergency building, she began to struggle with all her might, pounding on Adrian and throwing all caution to the wind.
"After everything I just told you, youâre still completely unmoved? Youâre so cold-blooded! I hate you, I hate you..."
