Chapter 628 - 629: Wouldn’t That Make You Worse Off Than Before
The Divine Immortal Tower was adorned outside with carved dragons and painted phoenixes — every imperial dragon motif and color reserved for royalty could be seen here.
Yellow glazed tiles covered the building from top to bottom, with exquisitely carved five-clawed dragon statues crouching on either side. The vermilion doors stood open, revealing the even more magnificent construction within the Divine Immortal Tower.
Ye Wanzhou carefully raised her head, wanting to steal just one glance — but that single look was enough to make her unable to look away.
She fished on this river every day, and even though she dared not look too much out of caution, she had always wondered... what did the Divine Immortal Tower look like inside?
Was it resplendent and magnificent? Did it have everything one could want? Was it clouds and mist, or immortal grace?
No matter how Ye Wanzhou imagined it, sometimes she felt her imagination had gone too far. But now she discovered... all of it still fell short of her imagination.
Not the tower, but the immortals.
Light and radiance flowed within the Divine Immortal Tower. Sometimes the architecture paled in comparison to the people. Immortals of every kind wore clothes that were obviously extravagant at a single glance, and every upward glance carried an overwhelming aura, as if heaven and earth were held in the palm of their hands.
Golden glazed wine cups drifted on their own, golden light cascading down.
The elegance of immortals far surpassed carved dragons and painted phoenixes, and far surpassed this magnificent Divine Immortal Tower.
No wonder the world loved to pursue immortality — all the splendor in the outside world paled in comparison to one’s own perfection.
Ye Wanzhou naturally understood she had the aptitude for cultivation, after all, she could sense what the immortals called spiritual energy.
But she came from poverty, with no resources, and so her path to immortality was cut short.
Ye Wanzhou had been making a living on this lake for no short time. She had heard things, and seen plenty.
Immortals were detached, and naturally also cold-hearted.
Ye Wanzhou once had something to depend on — she certainly couldn’t hand her life over to the whim of another.
Now that an immortal had come to her door, she understood her talent had been noticed. She had no one left to depend on, just a duckweed tied by habit to a boat, drifting.
Although the immortal spoke politely, refusing an immortal face to face would hardly be a good choice.
While Zhang Miaoyu was sizing up Ye Wanzhou, wasn’t Ye Wanzhou also observing Zhang Miaoyu?
In the end, Ye Wanzhou made her choice — she would take the gamble!
Alone on a boat, with nothing behind her.
If Ye Wanzhou truly had not a shred of calculation and courage, how would she dare fish for survival on a lake that devoured people?
Zhang Miaoyu walked calmly, leading the stunned Ye Wanzhou into the Divine Immortal Tower.
Ye Wanzhou looked at the small threshold, gritted her teeth, and stepped over it.
She understood that no matter what happened now, she could not show panic.
Ye Wanzhou lowered her head and watched the threshold as she stepped across.
The next moment, the tower, which had been somewhat noisy, instantly fell silent.
Ye Wanzhou raised her head and saw that all the immortals on the first floor were gazing toward her with yearning in their eyes.
The cultivators on the first floor all stood and bowed together.
Zhang Miaoyu’s gaze swept over them, and she nodded lightly.
The first floor was mostly Qi Refining and early Foundation Establishment cultivators. As the team leader would say — they were all small fry.
Cultivators also had to deal with social hierarchies. On the Eastern Divine Continent, Golden Core was already considered skilled, a senior, an "old monster" in others’ mouths.
They naturally wouldn’t wait on the first floor alongside Qi Refining and Foundation Establishment cultivators.
"This True Person."
A young man dressed plainly, looking like a shop attendant, quickly approached with an ingratiating smile.
"Please proceed to the VIP third floor. If you need anything, I can attend to you personally. Any requests, just give the order."
"No need."
Zhang Miaoyu shook her head gently, then raised her eyes toward the third floor.
She saw several familiar faces already leaning against the railing, their gazes fixed on Zhang Miaoyu.
In the past, Li Yingling had built a fairly large team on the Eastern Divine Continent. The Golden Core casual cultivators here all knew each other and shared information — naturally, people knew people.
"It’s been a while. Do you still remember me?"
A woman with a gentle voice leaned against the railing and smiled. "I haven’t seen you on the Eastern Divine Continent in a long time. I heard you went to the Central Continent with that Central Continent prodigy and joined a major sect."
"After all, you left together with that prodigy."
Zhang Miaoyu’s tone was calm. "Of course I remember. I just didn’t expect you to be here too."
On the third floor railing, a middle-aged man spoke with a contemptuous smile:
"I didn’t expect you to be here either."
"What, did you fall out with Yingling? Bringing a mortal here to deliver intelligence?"
"If that’s the case, you should have said so earlier. I’ve got plenty of intelligence — might even share some with you. Relying on some Central Continent prodigy — in the end, don’t you always have to rely on yourself?"
Zhang Miaoyu’s expression remained calm, a slight smile on her lips. "If that’s the case, you have a lot of intelligence?"
The middle-aged man lowered his brows, his tone flippant:
"Of course I do. What, you want to know?"
Zhang Miaoyu chuckled softly, then pulled a token from her spatial ring and infused it with spiritual energy.
A mysterious and profound aura surged from the token, then rippled outward.
The tower instantly fell completely silent.
The flippant air around the middle-aged man vanished in an instant, his expression turning to terror.
Zhang Miaoyu raised her hand slightly, and an unknown quantity of spirit stones and pills poured out from her spatial ring, cascading onto the floor in a flash of spiritual light.
"You’re an old acquaintance, and you have so much intelligence — then let’s start with you." Zhang Miaoyu’s gaze rose to look at the middle-aged man who had spoken earlier.
The middle-aged man on the third floor looked like he had a fishbone stuck in his throat, but he quickly cupped his fists and said:
"I didn’t know you were a Heavenly Sect Envoy. My apologies for the offense."
"Oh? You have so much intelligence you don’t know where to start?" Zhang Miaoyu didn’t acknowledge his words, continuing instead, "Then I’ll give you a starting point."
Zhang Miaoyu’s tone suddenly turned cold, her voice sharp with interrogation:
"Let me ask you! Is ’Yingling’ a name you’re allowed to call?"
The middle-aged man’s expression showed some fear. "It was my mistake."
"Don’t understand what I’m saying?"
"It is not a name I am allowed to call."
Zhang Miaoyu’s gaze turned icy. "Get out."
The middle-aged man hesitated not at all, his expression panicked as he hurried away.
Zhang Miaoyu’s gaze swept across the third floor and the floors above. The various expressions from before had all transformed into envy and attempts to curry favor.
Facing those looks, Zhang Miaoyu had expected to feel a surge of superiority — but she didn’t.
Perhaps from spending too much time with the disciples of the Eighteen Immortal Sects, by comparison...
The next moment, a figure darted in through the door.
Zhang Miaoyu glanced over — this time it was truly an old acquaintance from the past, and a very close one at that — a casual cultivator friend who had genuinely been through life and death together.
A mature-looking woman stared at Zhang Miaoyu in shock, joy brimming in her eyes. She smiled and said:
"I heard your voice from the lakeside — I didn’t think it was really you! You’ve become an Envoy?"
"I was the short-sighted one back then. To think you really made it with your team leader."
"A Heavenly Sect Envoy... my sister has become a Heavenly Sect Envoy!"
The mature woman’s expression was full of envy and delight at the same time.
Zhang Miaoyu thought for a moment, then smiled and said:
"What’s that? Daoist Yuyang’s disciple has to greet me when he sees me too."
The mature woman burst out laughing at those words. She had heard the most of Zhang Miaoyu’s old boasts back in the day. She laughed for a while, then suppressed her amusement and said:
"Then wouldn’t that make you worse off than before? Back then you said you could beat Daoist Yuyang’s disciple with one hand tied behind your back."
