Zheng Qichuan had rushed over to understand the situation, and the moment he opened the door, he saw the scene unfold. He instinctively lunged forward, tackling Jiang Li and rolling them both to the side.

A bullet struck the spot where Jiang Li had just been standing.

"Hmph." The man retracted his gun and turned to leave.

Zheng Qichuan tightened his grip on the gun at his waist and crept toward the window. By the time he looked out, the spot where the man had been was empty.

Across the way was an unfinished building.

"Damn it!" Zheng Qichuan slammed his fist against the wall.

Jiang Li’s head was ringing. She stared blankly at the bullet casing on the floor and the lifeless body of Xu Caiwei.

Zheng Qichuan took out his phone to make a call, and when he glanced back, he saw Jiang Li staring down at the spot where the bullet had hit.

’Is she... terrified?’

’Would someone who dares to disarm a bomb be afraid of this?’

"Right, get a team over there to check it out immediately."

As he spoke, Zheng Qichuan picked up the bullet casing from the floor.

The police arrived shortly after, and Jiang Li was taken in for questioning.

When Wu Ming heard that Jiang Li had been targeted in a shooting, her face went pale with fright. What century was this? People were still committing murder with guns out in the open.

Zheng Qichuan posted a guard at the hospital room, then rushed to the station himself.

「At the police station.」

"Name."

"Jiang Li, twenty-four. The killer kidnapped my friend. The deceased, Xu Caiwei, was working for him, and he told me to go find my friend. They strapped a bomb to Lu Ziyue and killed Xu Caiwei in the hospital. Captain Zheng showed up just in time to save me."

After Jiang Li finished speaking, the officer across from her flipped through his file.

"The deceased, Xu Caiwei, had injuries on her neck and hands. There were also signs of a struggle at the kidnapping scene last night. Miss Jiang, did you see the assailant’s face, or any distinguishing features?"

Jiang Li looked up at the officer. "I didn’t see him. He was wearing a mask. As for Xu Caiwei, she woke up and tried to attack me. It was self-defense."

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.

Someone knocked, and then Zheng Qichuan walked in with a group of people.

A man beside Zheng Qichuan glanced at the young officer in the room. The officer, in turn, glanced at Jiang Li, then stood up and left.

"Hello, Miss Jiang. I’m Captain Peng Hai of the investigative division. Zheng Qichuan and I will be in charge of this case."

The portly officer stepped forward with an amiable smile.

Jiang Li nodded as Peng Hai and Zheng Qichuan sat down across from her.

Jiang Li told them everything she could.

Peng Hai nodded. He then brought up the files on the bullet, the shoe prints from the scene, and the evidence found on the roof of the abandoned building.

"Miss Jiang, please take a look and see if there’s anything you need to add."

Jiang Li’s mouth fell open in surprise. ’They’re so fast. This is a big city, after all.’

"Before Xu Caiwei was shot, she said he would be at the Huang Family’s recognition banquet."

Peng Hai’s hand paused. The guests at a Huang Family banquet were either rich or powerful. That, combined with the methods Jiang Li had described, meant their suspect was no ordinary person.

This case was more complicated than he had imagined.

Peng Hai looked up at Jiang Li. ’The people targeting her aren’t just the ones we can see.’

’They’re trying every method possible to kill her. But how could an ordinary, unemployed college graduate be a threat to people like that?’

Peng Hai’s gaze flickered with thought before he gathered the files on the current leads.

"Miss Jiang, we’ll have people stationed around the banquet tomorrow. Captain Zheng will accompany you. We’ll notify you immediately if we get any new information. For your own safety, Miss Jiang, we strongly advise you not to act rashly."

Peng Hai looked at Jiang Li, finding it hard to imagine that this seemingly delicate woman was capable of fighting the assailant.

"Okay."

When Jiang Li left the room, Zheng Qichuan followed her. "Miss Jiang, until we find the killer, I’ll be staying by your side to ensure your safety."

The two of them returned to the hospital together. By the time they reached the room, Lu Xingye was already awake.

Lu Xingye looked around. ’Am I in a hospital?’

He clutched his throbbing head. He remembered getting off the plane that day and being targeted by that group. In the end, they had caught him.

"Lu Xingye, you’re awake!" Jiang Li hurried into the room and stopped by his bed.

Lu Xingye glanced at Jiang Li. ’Looks like she saved me again,’ he thought.

He grabbed her hand nervously. "Did you see him?"

"He was wearing a mask, so I didn’t get a clear look. But he’s a good fighter. His punches really hurt."

"He hit you? Where?" As soon as Lu Xingye heard Jiang Li had been hit, he scrambled out of bed. He took her by the hands, looked her over from top to bottom, then gently spun her around for a full inspection.

Lu Xingye’s brows furrowed. "I can’t see anything. What did the doctor say?"

"Uh, it’s nothing, really. Just some scrapes," Jiang Li said, quickly pulling her hands back.

Zheng Qichuan leaned against the wall with his arms crossed. ’Huh... Zhou Tiancheng never mentioned these two were a couple.’

"Oh, okay. That’s good, then." Lu Xingye snapped back to reality, scratching his head shyly as he stole a couple of glances at Jiang Li.

’She hasn’t changed at all,’ he sighed to himself, a little frustrated.

"Sister!" Miao Anji burst in and threw his arms around her. "Sister, did they catch the guy who tried to hurt you?"

’If they haven’t caught him, I’ll just go kill him for her,’ he thought.

"Captain Zheng and his team are already on it." Jiang Li saw Miao Anji’s eyes darting about and could guess exactly what he was thinking.

"Oh, okay then," Miao Anji sighed, disappointed.

The moment Yu Huannian walked in, Zheng Qichuan straightened up and stared intently at him.

’That physique... he’s definitely military material.’

Yu Huannian noticed Zheng Qichuan’s gaze, shot him a look, and then ducked behind Jiang Li.

Zheng Qichuan was speechless. A nearly six-foot-three giant trying to hide behind a five-foot-three Jiang Li was about as effective as not hiding at all.

"Jiang Li, I heard you almost got shot! You scared me to death!" Wu Ming cried, hugging Jiang Li, looking terrified.

"A gun?" Lu Xingye, who had just sat back down on the bed, shot right back up again.

"It’s okay, it’s okay! Captain Zheng saved me."

Only then did everyone’s gaze turn to Zheng Qichuan.

"Hey." Zheng Qichuan waved at them. ’Finally,’ he thought, ’they noticed someone else is in the room.’

Wu Ming’s eyes landed on Zheng Qichuan. She tugged on Jiang Li’s hand. "Jiang Li, where on earth did you find another handsome guy?"

She hadn’t gotten a good look at him the first couple of times, but now that she was staring, she realized he was incredibly handsome. The rugged, masculine type.

"This is Zheng Qichuan, a captain in the Criminal Investigation Division and a friend of Captain Zhou."

Wu Ming nodded. "Captain Zheng, hello, so nice to meet you."

Zheng Qichuan gave a slight nod. He glanced around at the people surrounding Jiang Li. ’What a strange bunch,’ he thought.

"Qi Chuan." Pei Yu spotted Zheng Qichuan and walked over, his curiosity piqued.

When Jiang Li saw Pei Yu, her gaze fixed on him and didn’t waver.

Yu Huannian stepped forward and punched Pei Yu squarely.

"Holy shit! Xiao Nian, what are you doing?!" Jiang Li cried out in shock.

She rushed forward to help him up. "M-Mr. Pei, are you okay?"

"I think... I’ll live," Pei Yu said, grimacing at Yu Huannian.

"Sorry about that. You look like an old enemy of mine. It was a reflex. How much for medical expenses?" Yu Huannian asked, pulling his phone from his pocket.

Jiang Li quickly helped Pei Yu to his feet, her internal suspicions already dissolving.

’Pei Yu has a slight build, with no sign of muscle on his arms. It can’t be him.’

"I’m fine, I’m fine, *cough cough*," Pei Yu said, waving a hand before dry-heaving.

"I’ll take you to see a doctor." Not wanting Jiang Li to clean up his mess, Yu Huannian strode forward, hoisted Pei Yu over his shoulder, and went off in search of a doctor.

"Hey, wait, hey! You—!" Pei Yu looked at the utterly implacable man, feeling completely mortified.

’Taken out by a single punch... Just how weak am I? This is so humiliating!’

"Miss Jiang, was the reason you didn’t mention this yesterday because you suspected Pei Yu?" Zheng Qichuan asked, looking at Jiang Li.

"I’m sorry. It’s because we have the same profession, so..."

"It’s fine. That’s understandable." This cleared up a question for Zheng Qichuan. He’d thought her statement yesterday was odd, but now he knew why.

Her suspicion was perfectly reasonable.

Jiang Li scratched her head in embarrassment. She hadn’t expected Xiao Nian to be so brazen about it.

"Don’t worry about it. Pei Yu isn’t so fragile that he can’t take a single punch."

Just then, Zheng Qichuan’s mouth twitched as he watched Pei Yu being wheeled back into the room.

’Well...’

Pei Yu lay on the bed, pretending to be unconscious. He was truly too mortified to face anyone now.

...

"Miss Jiang, I’ve come to escort you to the banquet." Huang Zhongyu appeared at the doorway of the hospital room.
