Chapter 283 - 276: The Tomb Raiders Want to Kill to Silence
Hu Zheng scoffed, looking down at his phone. He wasn’t watching the fire scene, but a video of an old woman crying and wailing for her husband.
’Only dead people don’t make a fuss,’ he thought. ’If she keeps this up, everyone will find out someone died in that fire.’
Wang Yang followed Hu Zheng’s gaze, and a bad feeling instantly washed over him.
The next second, Hu Zheng looked up at the two of them.
"The three of us are all in the same boat now. Wang Yang, you hit him the hardest. And you, Xiong Xin, you’re the one who tied the old man to the tree.
If this gets out, none of us are getting away."
The color drained from their faces.
Xiong Xin, the most cowardly of the three, looked at him, trembling. "Then... then what do we do?"
"Haven’t you noticed? Besides this damned old hag, no one has realized there was someone in the fire. As long as we shut her up, the police will never know. Afterward, we just lay low for a while, and eventually, no one will ever know about this."
Listening to him, the two men looked at the old woman on his phone screen.
"Seems so," Wang Yang nodded. The police hadn’t mentioned any casualties, which meant they had no idea anyone was inside.
It was just this damned old hag who kept squawking. At first, people might think she was just spouting nonsense, but if she said it enough times, someone was bound to take her seriously.
Seeing that the two were clearly wavering, Hu Zheng’s lips curled into a smirk. "So, in for a penny, in for a pound..."
Hu Zheng made a throat-slitting gesture. "She’s just a blind old hag. No one will care if she dies."
The three of them met each other’s eyes, a silent agreement passing between them.
In the middle of the night, the trio snuck to the foot of the volcano and quickly found Cai He’s house.
"This is the place from the video. There was even a group of people who felt sorry for the blind old hag and wanted to buy her things."
"Be careful. We’ll climb over the wall. Be quick about it. Just knock her out and take her. Don’t cause any trouble."
Hu Zheng gave the other two a warning look.
"Got it."
Wang Yang and Hu Zheng climbed over the wall. As soon as they were inside, they saw Cai He sitting on the edge of her bed, wiping away tears. She heard the noise and shot to her feet, startled.
"Who’s there?"
Wang Yang and Hu Zheng exchanged a glance, then rushed forward and knocked her unconscious. The two of them carried Cai He out.
"Let’s go, quick!"
The trio got Cai He into their car and drove off.
Chang Siqi was about to leave when she suddenly spotted the three shady figures. After hesitating for a couple of seconds, she started her car and followed them.
Sometime after Jiang Li fell asleep, a familiar voice began to echo in her ears.
"Boss, where are we taking this blind old hag?"
Hu Zheng sneered. "Don’t forget what we do for a living. This evening, a friend of mine sent me some new info.
There’s a tomb in the next city over, H City, filled with good stuff. We’ll take the treasures and leave this blind old hag inside.
We’ll even be helping her find her old man."
Wang Yang immediately gave him a thumbs-up. "You’re the man!"
Jiang Li furrowed her brow. ’A blind old hag? Aunt Cai?’
’They’re planning to kill her to silence her!’
Jiang Li looked at the road ahead. ’Am I in the front passenger seat?’
"Boss, is this information legit? Don’t let it be like last time."
He sneered. "You think I’m like you two? Dumb as rocks. I’ve already checked out this tomb.
The descendants are filthy rich. How poor could the tomb be?"
"Then after this job, we’ll skip town." Xiong Xin swallowed hard. He was terrified, but he still wanted one last score.
The stuff they’d stolen before hadn’t been sold yet. After this, they could get out of town, sell everything, buy a house, get a wife, and live the good life for the rest of their days.
Thinking about the good life ahead, Xiong Xin suddenly wasn’t so scared anymore.
"Look at you, so pathetic. You just missed the golden age. This line of work isn’t easy anymore. Back in the day, just one tomb could make you rich!"
He looked at his two underlings smugly.
"Boss, you must have been a team leader back then, right?"
Xiong Xin looked at Hu Zheng with admiration. Back then, anyone who could become a team leader was top-tier.
’I can’t believe we actually ran into a big shot!’
Jiang Li sensed a flash of insecurity in Hu Zheng’s heart and sneered inwardly. ’Looks like he’s just a half-baked poser putting on a brave face.’
"Of course. Back in my day, people paid a fortune to get me to come out of retirement!"
The whole way, the car was filled with the sound of the men flattering each other. Jiang Li’s brows knitted together. ’When am I going to wake up?’
Aunt Cai was already pitiful enough having lost her husband, and now she was being targeted by these three.
"Boss, what’s with the car behind us? It’s been following us for a while," said Wang Yang, who was driving, glancing at the car behind them.
If he remembered correctly, it had been there the whole time.
"It’s not the cops, is it?" Xiong Xin looked back, terrified.
His expression darkened, and he also looked back. It was a Wuling Hongguang minivan.
"Turn left at the next intersection and stop so we can check it out."
Wang Yang followed Hu Zheng’s orders and yanked the steering wheel.
Chang Siqi saw them turn left and followed. After she made the turn, she saw their car had already pulled over to the side of the road. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized they had spotted her.
Chang Siqi planned to play it cool and just drive past them. But the next second, Xiong Xin and Hu Zheng blocked her car, while Wang Yang pulled their own vehicle across the intersection, cutting off her escape.
"Hey lady, our car broke down. You got any tools?"
Hu Zheng walked up, a cigarette dangling from his lips, and knocked on her window.
Chang Siqi looked at the car in front of her, then turned to face Hu Zheng. "N-no, I don’t. You can call for help. My mom is waiting for me at home..."
When Jiang Li saw Chang Siqi, her breath caught in her throat. ’Why is she here too?!’
"Bullshit! Your mom’s waiting for you? There’s no road up ahead! Get the hell out of the car!"
He picked up a club from nearby and slammed it onto the car. The loud BANG made Chang Siqi jump in fear.
"Boss, you think this woman found out about us and that’s why she’s following us?" Xiong Xin asked, looking suspiciously at the person in the car.
’If that’s really the case...’
Since they had already killed someone, they didn’t mind taking two more lives.
Chang Siqi tried to stall for time while pulling out her phone to call the police. The next second, the side window was smashed.
"Fuck, she’s calling the cops!"
Xiong Xin yanked open the car door, snatched the phone, hung up the call, and then smashed it on the ground.
"You’re really asking for it!"
The three men were thoroughly enraged. Xiong Xin dragged Chang Siqi out of the car, and as soon as she hit the ground, they started punching and kicking her.
Jiang Li desperately wanted to take control of this body, but no matter how she tried, she failed.
Jiang Li cursed inwardly. The next second, the sound of a baby crying echoed in her ears, and she jolted awake.
She grabbed her phone and car keys, got up, and headed outside, calling Xu Chengfu as she walked.
"Officer Xu, the three men are on their way to H City. They kidnapped Aunt Cai, and they’ve discovered Chang Siqi following them. They’re beating her up on the side of the road right now."
"Understood." Xu Chengfu hung up and immediately contacted his colleagues already on standby in H City, as well as the local police.
Jiang Li got in her car and sped off.
