Chapter 625: A Bad Start
The first day of the Return to the City Plan got off to a rocky start.
Everyone had mentally prepared themselves for sacrifices, but no one expected so many.
Over a dozen new graves had already appeared in Rest Eternal Garden.
Though most of the dead were survivors, this death toll was hardly something to celebrate.
Inside Rest Eternal Garden, that figure still stood there.
People had already started giving that God Worshipper named Feng Zicong the title of "Most Devoted Lover Among Superhumans."
Ordinary people, after becoming superhumans, each developed their own quirks.
Many superhumans had little interest in the opposite sex.
Captain Chu, for example, occasionally ate dirt and even had a peeping habit.
Iron Lion's mind was increasingly deteriorating, growing more and more simple-minded.
Dantai Bie talked a lot—though whether that was his original personality or a side effect of becoming a Wandering Immortal was anyone's guess.
But some superhumans were very fond of the opposite sex.
Those with such desires often maintained ambiguous relationships with multiple partners.
For instance, in this base, one superhuman had several women.
Of course, this would have been absolutely impossible before the apocalypse.
But now that it was the apocalypse, no one bothered to stop him, though no one envied him either.
Just earlier, that superhuman's women had been fighting in the street.
The reason was simple: he'd bought a gift for one of them but not the others.
So they started brawling.
Someone as devoted as this Feng Zicong character? This was the first they'd seen.
Quite a few female survivors had started looking toward Rest Eternal Garden with changed expressions.
Some women, relying on their looks, even tried to get close but were all scared off.
Clearly, the pressure radiating from Feng Zicong showed his mood was terrible—getting near him was enough to make anyone's heart race.
All these deaths at the base...
They didn't have much impact on the overall atmosphere.
After all, since the apocalypse began, everyone who'd survived this long had witnessed too much death.
Death had long become part of every apocalypse survivor's life.
The only ones truly grieving were those connected to the deceased.
On the base's streets, people still strolled leisurely.
A fishing enthusiast grabbed his rod, trying to pull some supplies from the sea to supplement his convoy.
At the Fair Convoy, everyone had their own arrangements.
Gong Yong had returned to his workshop, still studying that Revitalization Stove.
The Revitalization Stove had started quietly gaining popularity at the base.
But its efficiency was truly poor.
And its price wasn't exactly low, so not many convoys were willing to buy one.
Ding Dong was still tending to the Ideal Grain Seeds.
This woman valued those seeds far more than improving her own strength.
She even checked every single leaf on the Ideal Grain Seeds, and if she found a yellow one or one chewed by insects, she'd get incredibly nervous.
Zhou Xiaoxiao had found a quiet spot, punching and kicking relentlessly.
Sweat soaked her temples and bangs, dripping to the ground, leaving small dark patches.
Dantai Bie had already disappeared.
That guy had no idea where he'd run off to.
Of all the Fair Convoy members, he was like a fish in water in this base, had the most friends, and the most reliable information.
Though he talked a lot of nonsense, he was righteous at heart, having wandered the apocalypse alone as a lone ranger all these years.
His experiences far surpassed those of many superhumans.
Iron Lion was sprawled on the roof of the vehicle in a spot specially cleared for him, snoring loudly.
Gotta admit, his sleep was enviable.
Xu Lina sat on the roof, drinking wine.
The pink-haired girl used to have a drinking problem, but she'd quit, and now it was Xu Lina's turn.
Before, Xu Lina hadn't talked much, but she'd at least said something occasionally. Now though...
Since becoming a superhuman, Xu Lina talked far, far less.
Most of the time, she stood quietly behind Chen Ye.
Squad Leader Chu Che was haggling with the people from a neighboring convoy, trying to borrow their manpower—which naturally came at a cost.
Aunt Gu was holding a Screaming Radish, teaching the convoy's young people how to identify them.
Doctor Luo and his wife were checking up on the convoy members' health.
Back when there were no Revitalization Talismans, many convoy members had been eating expired food for a long time, and even that wasn't enough to fill their stomachs.
So, a lot of people had serious health problems.
They'd had the Young Medic from the Shepherd Convoy check them out before, but some still weren't fully healed.
A few severe cases looked like they might not last much longer.
Xue Nan was wandering all over the base with his sister's portrait in hand.
These past few days, he'd practically asked everyone.
But every answer was a no.
He seemed numbed by the rejections.
Xue Nan wouldn't get an answer; he'd just mechanically say thank you.
If people didn't know he was part of the Fair Convoy, someone might have tried to harm him by now.
And on the other side.
The Great Shun Dynasty Convoy.
Chen Hao sat in the convoy, covered in dust and grime, looking miserable.
He was furious that Little Fatty had abandoned him and fled.
But Chen Hao had no intention of settling the score.
Because that Little Fatty had used all his supernatural power to materialize that "Mobile Palace," which had incredible defensive capabilities.
Even for Chen Hao, unless Little Fatty came out on his own,
there was no way to beat him up.
Thinking back to the scene earlier today, if he hadn't been the one holding the front line, at least half of the Great Shun Dynasty Convoy's survivors would have died.
He knew Little Fatty had him in a bind.
He was just a bit of a saint, not stupid.
Though, in Chen Ye's eyes, he might as well be stupid.
Squad Leader Chu Che had told him several times to join the Fair Convoy.
Chen Hao really liked the atmosphere there and would have been happy to join.
Everyone had their own little schemes, but in critical moments, everyone still had their bottom line.
Today's incident—no one but Chen Ye would have done something like that.
In Chen Hao's view, the Fair Convoy had more good people.
But as long as Little Fatty didn't die, the oath he'd sworn would remain in effect.
That was the side effect of the Quotation Sequence, and also its fate.
But even without that oath, he couldn't leave the Great Shun Dynasty Convoy.
Because if he left, these ordinary people probably wouldn't survive two weeks before they all died.
Chen Ye always called him a saint.
He knew that too, but so what?!
He just wanted fewer people in this world to die.
"Mr. Chen, you haven't eaten all evening. How about having some?"
A timid voice sounded beside him.
He turned to see a little girl covered in dirt, about thirteen or fourteen years old.
At the same age, this little girl was like heaven and earth compared to Little Fish of the Fair Convoy.
Chen Hao felt his throat go dry: "I..."
He was about to say he wasn't hungry.
But seeing the anticipation in the little girl's eyes,
Chen Hao still reached out and took the bowl.
The Great Shun Dynasty's food wasn't anything special, and it couldn't compare to the Fair Convoy's.
In the big bowl, there was only half a portion of rice and some black, unidentifiable stuff.
It smelled bad, but at least it was edible.
Chen Hao's clothes were also tattered.
He patted the little girl's head, then crouched down and started eating.
But the food in his mouth felt like chewing wax.
"Your Majesty... will General Chen... leave? After how we treated him... isn't it a bit..."
Standing atop the migration vehicle called the "Mobile Palace," in front of the large floor-to-ceiling window,
Little Dezi asked worriedly. If Chen Hao left the Great Shun Dynasty Convoy,
the convoy would definitely plummet.
Little Fatty snorted coldly: "No worries. Quotation Sequence superhumans' promises are worth a thousand gold—that's the source of their power and also their fate!"
"He swore to follow me back then, so he will never betray me!"
"Forever..."
Little Fatty was very confident.
Little Dezi took a deep look at Chen Hao, his expression complex.
...
Inside the Monster Pickup Truck.
Chen Ye had laid out the Resentment Dragon's scale, the Tangled Remnant Limb, and Hatred on the floor of the vehicle.
The Hundred-Ghost Eater's sacrifice—whether it was Wondrous objects, Anomalies, or anything else—
all could be used as sacrificial offerings.
Of course, there was a prerequisite: the sacrificial offering had to be recognized by the Hundred-Ghost Eater.
Otherwise, even if offered, the Hundred-Ghost Eater wouldn't accept it.
The Resentment Dragon and the Tangled Crowd would definitely get the Hundred-Ghost Eater's approval.
Even Hatred could.
But whether the Hundred-Ghost Eater would accept the Resentment Dragon's scale or the Tangled Crowd's remnant limb was another matter.
After all, the scale and the limb were quite different from their originals.
