Chapter 656: Leaving Here
Distant movement stirred in the darkness beyond.
The shifting silhouettes looked like moving crowds!
How could there be people here?
Were they even human at all?
Everyone’s heart suddenly crawled with a chilling dread.
To see moving crowds in a place like this sent every person’s guard skyrocketing.
Chen Ye silently melted his figure into the shadows, putting the others between himself and the threat.
If a conflict broke out, he’d let Wu Zehui and the others take the frontal assault while he handled the sneak attacks.
If things got truly unwinnable, he could at least save his own skin and be the first to flee and report back!
That was exactly what Chen Ye thought, and exactly what he did!
The moving crowd across the way clearly spotted Chen Ye’s group too, instantly on high alert.
“Hey over there—are you human or Anomaly?”
Before Chen Ye’s side could answer, the opposite group fired off the question.
Everyone turned to look at Chen Ye, who was still at the back.
He was the leader here; it was best for him to step up and handle this.
Wu Zehui and Number One didn’t know Chen Ye’s personality yet. Seeing that he’d somehow ended up at the very rear without anyone noticing, both had their suspicions.
The sunny young man Wu Zehui’s face turned as dark as a pot bottom, and he silently swore he’d never take another job from the Fair Convoy again.
As for the punk girl Number One, judging by her expression, she felt the same way.
Chen Ye shot Ding Dong a look.
Ding Dong instantly understood Chen Ye’s intent. She let out a small sigh and answered, “We’re human—are you human or Anomaly?!”
Hearing their response, the moving crowd on the other side seemed to exhale a huge sigh of relief.
“We’re from the Silent Council…”
As the voice answered, the opposite group moved closer.
Soon everyone could see the approaching figures.
Both sides’ flashlights swept wildly over each other.
By the light of the flashlights, the crowd finally got a clear look at who was coming.
It was a group of about a dozen people wearing Silent Council uniforms.
Every single one was armed to the teeth.
Those with black patches on their uniforms were likely the Silent Council’s Black Clothes.
Each person gripped a bizarre rifle of an unidentifiable model, wore a bulletproof vest covered in intricate patterns, heavy marching boots, and a helmet etched with complex designs.
Nearly everyone had a short horizontal blade tucked into the small of their back.
Clearly, even if these weren’t Wonders, they were weapons capable of at least some effect against Anomalies.
Back in the Oasis, a group of so-called scholars had defined such items.
The lead figure had a square face with an honest, trustworthy look that radiated a sense of justice. He stood about 1.75 meters tall, with a burly frame and a silver Silent Council badge on his arm.
Behind him were several others with similar silver badges.
Obviously, these were the Silent Council’s senior Observers.
Judging by how the others looked at the square-faced man, he was clearly their leader.
But what were these people doing here?
Seeing that it was the Silent Council, most of the crowd relaxed slightly.
Only Chen Ye stayed hidden in the darkness.
Others might find the Silent Council reliable. But Chen Ye, naturally suspicious, had more questions in his mind than stars in the sky.
Why were these people here?
Was the Eternal Life Society they’d just seen connected to the Silent Council?
Why had the Silent Council chosen Xi City as the target?
All these were problems!
Seeing that Chen Ye wasn’t coming out, Ding Dong had no choice but to steel herself and approach their group.
“Hello, I’m Song Wei, senior Observer of the Silent Council.”
“We just finished a mission in Green Mountain District and saw people outside the hotel. We went to check and realized there were still people inside who hadn’t come out!”
“So we came in to take a look…”
“We just didn’t expect…”
Song Wei was probably talking about Xu Lina’s group.
He stopped there, turning his head to look at the forest of hanging corpses on the ceiling. The shock was clearly written on his face.
Chen Ye studied his expression closely and concluded that the shock seemed genuine.
Apparently, the hanging corpse forest in Room 23 had caught even this senior Silent Council Observer off guard.
Chen Ye stayed in the shadows, scrutinizing every Silent Council member carefully.
Though they were well-equipped, it was obvious that even they were stunned by the hanging corpses.
Several Black Clothes members with helmets on still showed their shock through the way their helmets shook.
“Are you from the Fair Convoy?”
Song Wei had clearly seen the Silent Council’s files on the base. Facing the people before him—especially Iron Lion’s mutated appearance—he quickly guessed they were from the Fair Convoy.
Of course, he could have just asked, since he’d met Xu Lina outside Haosheng Hotel.
Chen Ye couldn’t stay hidden any longer and stepped out from the back of the crowd.
Song Wei found it a bit odd that this convoy’s leader had been hiding at the very rear, but smart as he was, he didn’t dwell on it.
Only Wu Zehui and the punk girl Number One wore looks of disdain.
Ding Dong and the others, meanwhile, seemed completely used to it, as if Captain Chen’s sleazy behavior was old hat.
Chen Ye stepped forward and exchanged information with Song Wei.
Just then, the Pink-haired Girl and Dantai Bie returned.
Both looked terrible.
Without hiding anything from the Silent Council, they described everything they’d seen after leaving.
After the Pink-haired Girl had left the group, she’d sped along on her flying sword at low altitude.
The dense forest of hanging corpses overhead filled her with extreme unease. As a Sword Immortal Sequence, her senses were sharper than other Sequence Superhumans’.
She had a feeling that something truly terrifying was lurking here.
The girl didn’t know how long she’d flown—time itself seemed frozen here.
She hadn’t found any sign of a way out, so she’d simply come back.
Sun Xixi’s experience was identical to Dantai Bie’s. Both had scoured the surroundings but found not a single clue for escape.
From Sun Xixi and Dantai Bie, the group learned that the area was far larger than anyone had imagined.
Given the Pink-haired Girl’s speed—even if she hadn’t been flying in a straight line or at full throttle—she must have covered dozens of kilometers.
That meant the area was even bigger than everyone had thought.
If all that space was filled with hanging corpses, just how many bodies were there?
Everyone felt a chill run down their spine.
Even the senior Silent Council Observer Song Wei’s face was as cold and hard as stone.
Even Dantai Bie, the chatterbox, couldn’t find any words to break the oppressive silence.
The Black Clothes were clearly well-trained, but after the Pink-haired Girl finished her account, even they began to stir in panic.
It took a while for everyone to calm down.
Chen Ye cleared his throat twice and said seriously, “Now’s not the time to discuss this. What we need to do is get out of here as fast as possible!”
“Getting out isn’t hard. We did some groundwork before coming in!”
“We just follow the marks we left!”
Chen Ye thought to himself, earlier we tried to leave through the door we came in from, but we couldn’t open it at all.
If you can open it, that’d be a miracle.
Wait—where’s the door?
It was only then that Chen Ye and the others realized the door they’d entered through had silently disappeared.
What the hell…
With so many Superhumans here, not a single one had noticed.
This place…
Chen Ye didn’t stop the Silent Council’s escape plan. Maybe these guys had their own methods.
When he had no solution of his own, he was willing to try someone else’s, even if it seemed unlikely to work.
No one wanted to stay in this place a second longer.
Under the lead of senior Silent Council Observer Song Wei, the group followed the marks they’d left, moving quickly.
Along the way, Song Wei wore a pair of green-glowing protective goggles, constantly searching the ground or walls for something.
Those green-glowing goggles were probably some kind of Wonder, or maybe a Silent Council-specific product.
Finally, when everyone saw a door appear on the wall, they breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Whether they could open it or not was another matter—at least they’d found a door.
Sure enough, when they tried to push it open, they failed.
But the Silent Council members weren’t panicked.
The square-faced Song Wei carefully took a small wooden box from his backpack and opened it. Inside was a yellow talisman paper.
He pressed the talisman paper against the door.
“Everyone, close your eyes!”
The moment he said it, the talisman burst with blinding white light.
It felt like some kind of energy was undergoing tidal shifts.
Like something was colliding with the energy on the talisman, consuming each other.
“Creaaak…”
The long creak of a wooden door opening.
That door Chen Ye had thought indestructible cracked open just a sliver.
The door had been opened.
Several helmeted Silent Council members poked their heads through the gap to look.
“Captain, is that you!?”
