Chapter 1215 - 1183: Seeking Verification
Chapter 1183 Verification
As the high-level meeting continued, the scope of discussion became increasingly broad. The bright sunshine did not dispel the shadows that lingered in the hearts of the people from last night, so the arguments persisted, yet no effective policies or systems emerged. When everything turned into mutual slander and attacks, Meisai seemed to become the scapegoat for all departments, but he himself remained oblivious, letting the words pass in one ear and out the other.
Having seen such scenarios many times, the conclusion was nothing more than leaving the task of arresting people to him. Without disrupting public order, how could anyone compete with those gang members without firing a single shot or bullet? Such a realistic question was, for a change, not raised by anyone. There were many words in officialdom, many apprehensions behind them, but no one wanted to bear actual responsibility. If this time the victim hadn’t been Murong Lengyue, at most, there would only be a case investigation, and it wouldn’t have led to such political blame.
After more than two hours of meeting, Meisai carried his bag and walked out of the conference room. People from the Security Office made a few snide remarks as they left. Sitting in the car, Meisai was in a state of detachment for a long time. He could have brought up the issue of the eyewitness at the meeting today, but in the end, he kept his mouth shut. Once this matter was revealed, that illegal worker would surely be killed on the way back to his country.
Driving to the club, Meisai looked up at the palatial place resembling an emperor’s palace. Such ostentation that doesn’t attract crime is quite strange; ah, it’s originally a rendezvous point for criminals.
After stating his purpose and showing his credentials at the entrance, he was led into an office by a bodyguard who looked like trouble. Shao Weihua was sitting in a comfortable leather chair, resting with his eyes closed. Even when someone entered, he didn’t open his eyes, the dark circles around his eyes betraying the fact that he hadn’t slept all night.
Ha, so even this kind of person has sleepless nights, Meisai thought to himself, feeling much more balanced. "Mr. Shao, I’m Meisai from the Palermo Police Station, and I have a few questions about your subordinate, Mr. Robert, that I’d like to verify."
Shao Weihua suddenly opened his eyes and looked at Meisai with a strange expression. "Looking for me to ask about Robert? Director, you seem to have found the wrong person. I have no relationship with Robert; you should be looking for Nicholas instead."
"Ah!" Meisai nodded with a smile. "It was my choice of words. But who in Palermo doesn’t know that Robert is quite close to you?"
Shao Weihua laughed heartily, deliberately widening his small eyes and adjusting his glasses on the bridge of his nose. "Well, if you think of it that way, you could say that Robert and I had some business dealings. We were negotiating on something not that long ago."
"When was that?"
"Ah, I remember now." Feigning a pensive state, Shao Weihua let out an exaggerated exclamation. "I met your police that day, quite unfortunately, someone got hit with some ’Wu Yue’ gambling, which made it impossible for us to proceed, what a pity!"
"Mr. Shao, didn’t you come across Xiao Lin that day?"
"Young Master Xiao? Yes, I met him, along with his girlfriend, a very beautiful woman." Shao Weihua lit a cigarette. "Is there any point to the Director asking this? I still don’t know the real purpose of your visit today."
"On the same day, Young Master Xiao’s girlfriend went missing, and according to informants, there was a large-scale gunfight that night at a club under Mr. Robert’s name, a club co-owned by you and Mr. Robert. You bought the original Casabell Jenvies property from him; that’s not incorrect, is it?"
"The club is indeed co-owned by Robert and me, but what does that have to do with me? Are you suggesting that I..."
"Ah, no! I naturally believe Mr. Shao is a conscientious good citizen. It’s just that if someone disappeared on your premises, not saying it’s unrelated would be a bit reluctant. Moreover, Young Master Xiao reported to the police. If Mr. Robert is around, please have him cooperate with our work."
"You picked the wrong day, Director Meisai; I’m also looking for Robert. He hasn’t been to the club for several days."
"Ah, and there’s another matter that I think Mr. Shao needs to know. Regarding the night market shooting scene, a witness identified the assassin of the Murong Family Head as Robert’s subordinate. You should be well aware of the implications here; whether to shield Robert or be enemies with the Murong Family, that’s your choice. As an intelligent person, I don’t need to speak too plainly, right?"
"Is your visit today based on personal friendship or official business?"
"That is up to Mr. Shao’s interpretation. Before the Murong Family formally files a complaint, you have time to reconsider, otherwise, it will be judged with Robert’s guilt in mind."
Shao Weihua was taken aback, his eyes casting a bit of a strange look at Meisai. "Who exactly are you?"
"If you see Robert, please ask him to come to the police station. We’re about to conduct a search." Meisai stood up, ignoring Shao Weihua’s question.
"Wait a minute!" Before Meisai walked out the door, Shao Weihua called to him. "Concerning that night, there’s something you don’t know."
Meisai revealed a subtle smile and walked back to the desk gracefully. "The more details Mr. Shao provides, the more it will prove your innocence."
Shao Weihua’s office suddenly fell silent; almost no sound came from within. Through the heavy wooden door, voices were hushed, under the intentionally crafted background music, making the people outside want to embed themselves entirely into the door. Suddenly, footsteps were heard from inside, the sound of shoes clacking on the wooden floor startled those at the door, making them jump several feet into a side room like monkeys. Meisai emerged from inside, escorted by Shao Weihua to the club’s exit, watching him get into the car before quickly returning to the office.
"Where is Robert now?" An angry slap on the office desk; Wang Zhanting, who usually sat on the side sofa reading newspapers, was now nowhere to be found, as Shao Weihua was stunned for a moment, turned around, and walked out, grabbing someone at random to inquire. "Go fetch Robert to see me."
"Boss, the chief did call earlier, asking you to bear with it for now, saying he would soon handle these matters cleanly."
"What?" Shao Weihua pushed the person aside fiercely, hurried up to the fourth floor, opened a door, and rushed inside.
The room was empty, nothing inside, the bed showed traces of disorder, shards of broken glass littered the floor, a chair toppled over, and ropes scattered across, even a wet stain on the carpet.
Shao Weihua leaned weakly against the door, groaning. The person was gone. "Where is the woman who was kept here?"
"The boss moved her to another safer place; there are too many people frequenting here and it’s unsafe."
"Damn it!" (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendations and monthly tickets; your support is my greatest motivation.)
