Chapter 1248 - 1217: The Appearing Spots
Robert’s death undoubtedly became a topic of conversation, not only among the gangs but also in the mainstream where it was a topic of discussion after dinner. Regardless, he was a nerve-wracking guy, but now his inexplicable death could be considered a cause for celebration. As for the cause of death, there was no need to investigate, so the final conclusion was that a gang lord, after rising rapidly, was killed out of jealousy by his peers in a foreign land, dying violently in the street.
Meisai flipped through the newspaper from beginning to end; headlines like these filled almost every section, but as the director, he didn’t feel much relief. Tang seemed very idle but was not seen in the office often.
"You don’t seem to think it’s much of a deal." Tang said, swinging his foot, biting on a lollipop.
"Hmm, Robert is dead, there will always be another Robert coming out."
"Your worries are a bit unnecessary, Meisai. Don’t you want to know who killed Robert?"
"He died because he was foolish. If I pursue it, I’ll be foolish too." Meisai said with a laugh. "No matter what the facts are, the ignorant people always feel thrilled when a bad guy dies."
Of course, Meisai didn’t want to continue, and neither did Tang, but his little face was marked with obvious worry. "I know that with Robert’s death, something else has disappeared as well, but I think it’s better if Meisai doesn’t know, plus, Palermo is about to face a tough battle soon."
"Has there been any new news from Mu Rongyun’s side?" Tang slowly shook his head. "Not yet, except he’s very angry right now."
Meisai wanted to ask something more, but at that moment Rochester barged in. "Is there something important?"
Rochester glanced at Tang, swallowed the words that were about to come out. "I’ll come back later." Nimble as a cat, Tang slid off the desk, hands behind his back, with dark patches on his snow-white skin.
"Tang, aren’t you going to see your relative?" Meisai called out as he was leaving.
"Went, he has no time to bother with me."
Rochester shot a sympathetic look at the kid, snapped back by Meisai’s dry cough. "Director, there’s news from Palermo Prison; Casabell Jenvies was attacked in prison yesterday and is now critically injured, sent to the hospital."
"What?" Meisai growled darkly. "How could this happen? Is his life in danger?"
"By the time I came over, he had just passed the critical phase."
"Send more people to watch over, Casab can’t die." Meisai suddenly thought of something, grabbing the coat on the chair as he walked out, hoping to notify her before Francis, as this woman had been giving quite the headache recently.
In the hospital corridor, two people crept toward the ICU from the stairwell, where police were heavily guarding. They slinked back into the stairwell like thieves.
"What now?"
"Go back and report, we can’t just storm in, right?" One of them smacked the other’s head, but at that moment a commotion from the hallway caught their attention.
"Looks like it’s Francis, Casab’s daughter."
"Let me in!" Francis struggled against the hands of two officers, disregarding others’ stares. "Let me in."
"I’m sorry Miss, it’s not possible right now, without orders from above, we can’t let you in."
"I’m his daughter, why can’t I go in?" Francis’ petite frame looked like a chick against two robust men.
"Francis, calm down!" Expected this would happen, hence why Meisai rushed to the hospital immediately, only to still be a step too late.
Upon seeing Meisai, Francis broke free from the two men’s grip and rushed to him. "How could this happen? Weren’t we assured it would be safe?"
"I’ll look into this, alright?" Meisai patted her back, comforting her. "Go back first, I’ll notify you once I know."
"No, I won’t go back, let me see my father, just once." Francis pleaded, putting Meisai in a difficult position.
"Notify the boss, they can come up." Hidden in the shadows, the two exchanged glances as Meisai hesitated, with another one approaching the ICU.
"Passed out, the boss arrived so fast!" Just about to dial the phone, the other one pushed him and pointed outside — the one to be notified had already come up by themselves.
Xiao Lin, hands in his pockets, deliberately walked quickly, making clacking sounds as his shoe soles struck the concrete. Francis, facing Xiao Lin who was walking over, suddenly pushed Meisai away and charged at Xiao Lin.
Maybe with a bit too much force, she found herself bumping right into Xiao Lin’s chest, as if throwing herself into his arms. "Miss Francis, you’re very excited to see me!" Xiao Lin supported Francis, half jokingly.
"Yes, I’m so excited I want to kill you, you liar!" Compared to Xiao Lin’s tease, Francis looked much fiercer.
"Killing me in front of so many eyes could land you in prison. If you hate me that much, you can do it at night in a deserted place." Xiao Lin chuckled, taking Francis’ hand to Meisai. "Director, can we see Casab? I know the process is complicated, but please understand the sentiment of a daughter."
Meisai glanced at the sincere look in Francis’s eyes and relented. "Fifteen minutes, you must come out."
"Thank you!" Francis burst into the ward, leaving only Xiao Lin and Meisai standing in the hallway.
"Let’s talk, Young Master Xiao." Meisai was the first to open the door to the stairway, just in time to meet the two inside. He raised an eyebrow, glancing at Xiao Lin behind him without saying a word. "Let’s change places, to the rooftop."
Xiao Lin glared at the two, and instantly they deflated like punctured balls, unable to bicker any more, their mutual blame amplifying as their figures receded into the distance.
The rooftop was draped with white sheets and hospital garb — while many institutions now passed on their services to the appropriate service providers, places that did it themselves were rare. Even hospitals, with their emphasis on hygiene, looked to fixed service providers to handle daily laundry. What’s hung up here were mostly the carers’ own possessions or results of family laundry.
Meisai lifted the sheets and darted past, while Xiao Lin went around. (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for it with recommendations and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
