Chapter 1174: Hunting (5)

Murong Lengyue slowly shook her head, "You’re someone who takes things seriously. The more you know, the worse it is for you. I know you’re impressive, but in their eyes, you’re just a small arm; how could you possibly topple an elephant’s leg? Shao Qinyi came this time for Shao Weihua. I know Qin Lin’s death made Quan Xianglin determined to kill you. This is unrelated to his entanglement with the Xiao Family. Shao Weihua’s repeated mistakes are why Qin Lin took action personally, so Shao Qinyi has no chance of saving his brother. If Qin Lin weren’t dead, you might have had time, but your impulsiveness has made this war much more interesting and much simpler."

"Quan Xianglin targeted our Xiao Family not just because of the drug and arms routes in Sicily; there must be more to it!"

Murong Lengyue’s expression changed, as if there was an unspeakable secret. "I can only say that there is a very subtle relationship between the Xiao Family, Mu Rongyun, and Quan Xianglin. I can’t say anything else. I know deep down you’ve figured out the origins of these entanglements. I’m helping you, not to bind you, but because..."

"Because of what?"

Her bright eyes swept across Xiao Lin’s pale face. Murong Lengyue lowered her head and fell silent. Xiao Lin didn’t ignore her soft sigh; he chose not to continue asking.

Taking a deep breath, Xiao Lin showed a vicious expression. "As long as I escape tonight, starting tomorrow, I’ll crush all these annoying flies."

Murong Lengyue shook her head again, lowering her voice, "Now is really not the time to confront them head-on. Quan Xianglin’s goal is to lure Mr. Xiao to Palermo and eliminate the Italian Mafia, killing two birds with one stone. Nicholas understands patience better than you. Why does a Mafia Godfather watch these people run rampant without taking action? Does that seem like a boss’s behavior? Think again why he put his two best assistants, one in the hospital and one in jail? It’s all about waiting for the right moment, and what you’re missing now is that moment."

Xiao Lin snorted slightly, "I understand what you mean." Suddenly, he laughed, "Maybe you’re right, but what I want to say is, I’m doing this for myself, not for the Xiao Family."

Murong Lengyue wanted to ask more, but Xiao Lin suddenly reached out and covered her mouth. "Shh! They’re here."

Even though the large construction machinery in the distance caused a dull rumbling to echo inside the hollow building, the two could still discern the sound of a few scattered footsteps cautiously approaching. And there were also hurried yet careful footsteps running upstairs, seemingly intending to thoroughly search each floor.

Xiao Lin signaled Murong Lengyue to step aside, tightly gripping the spike in his hand, standing still against the still damp wall. His squinted eyes emitted a sharp gleam, like a cheetah crouching in the grass waiting for antelope.

Sha... sha... sha... In the quiet waiting, Xiao Lin’s ears were only filled with the sound of that single set of footsteps he focused on.

As the minutes passed, Murong Lengyue felt like her heart was about to jump out of her chest, with cold sweat seeping from her clenched fists. After waiting unconsciously, Xiao Lin’s locked-on target finally reached the other side of the wall, slowly moving toward Xiao Lin’s position. Sweat gradually formed on his forehead, and his nerves stretched like an arrow on a bowstring.

Murong Lengyue felt the same, even her breathing became cautious. Her eyes were fixed on the dark doorway next to Xiao Lin. She understood that if Xiao Lin couldn’t subdue the incoming person in an instant, that person would surely scream. Although the building was filled with the rumbling of machinery, a scream could easily alert the nearby assassins, and within minutes, they would be surrounded, sealing their fate.

Half a minute later, the assassin appeared at the empty doorway. Perhaps it was the assassin’s innate crisis sense, or perhaps it was something else that caught his attention. The footsteps suddenly stopped just as he was about to step into the room.

This unexpected change tensed Xiao Lin’s nerves again, freezing the world at this moment; he stood there, even forcibly holding his breath.

One second, two seconds, three seconds... In the waiting, every second felt like a tormenting day. Just then, Murong Lengyue, who was crouched and waiting, perhaps due to excessive tension, inexplicably broke the stick she held, which was as thick as a baby’s arm!

Crack! The crisp sound not only caused Murong Lengyue to let out a low cry but also made Xiao Lin and the assassin on the other side of the wall tremble all over. The sound was like thunder on a clear day to the two whose nerves were on edge!

Xiao Lin took a deep breath, looking at Murong Lengyue with a complex gaze, neither blaming her nor questioning. It appeared a bit empty, yet also dangerous. When Murong Lengyue was about to speak, Xiao Lin shook his head. This crackling sound was no longer about making noise; it was about their lives.

At the critical moment, what was being tested was the reaction speed and adaptability of the two people. The assassin might have only suspected or sensed something, but the sudden crack followed by a gasp solidified his suspicions.

The assassin trembled all over and, after a brief moment of shock, suddenly retreated and opened his mouth to cry for help.

However, he was fast, but someone else was faster!

Xiao Lin, as tense as an arrow on the string, pushed his speed to unprecedented levels, instantly reaching the door. His feet swiftly tapped the ground like a dark flash speeding forward, and with a fierce downward slash of his tightly held blade!

Thud... Accompanied by a muffled roar from Xiao Lin, the sharp blade, driven with incredible force, severed the head and shoulders of the swiftly retreating assassin in front of him!

Bang! The headless corpse fell lifelessly to the ground, emitting a dull thud.

Xiao Lin, as if drained of all strength, staggered a few steps and fell to one knee with a bang. Exhausted and tormented by pain, Xiao Lin didn’t even have the strength to stand after that full-force attack. Cold sweats dripped onto the ground, and his face appeared even paler under the dim light, revealing a ghastly pallor.

Hearing the silence outside once more, Murong Lengyue hurriedly ran out.

"Don’t scare me! What’s going on, don’t lie to me!" Seeing Xiao Lin, who was bent over and trembling slightly on the ground, Murong Lengyue felt a twist of pain in her heart. Her big eyes immediately welled up with tears as she gently embraced Xiao Lin and sobbed softly. She couldn’t believe that killing an insignificant assassin would leave Xiao Lin in such a state. She patted Xiao Lin’s face, the sweat covering her hands mirroring the moist feeling in her heart. "Where exactly are you hurt?"

Xiao Lin braced his body with the tip of the blade against the ground, his eyes fixated on a spot, ignoring Murong Lengyue’s questions. The wound on his chest seemed to be tearing apart, with each spasm tugging at his nerves, rendering him speechless.

On the street, facing a wave of assassins, being a hero to save the beauty was overly challenging. But back then, if he hadn’t used his body to shield her, the woman in front of him might have met her maker. Ah, such a foolish woman, unaware of the burden of having someone by her side. Fortunately, this foolish woman had a diligent bodyguard. However, out of the five bullets that struck him continuously, two hit his heart precisely, making breathing difficult. The powerful strike earlier in the tense moment drained his last ounce of strength. Now, every breath felt like his heart was on fire, searing with pain!

Xiao Lin weakly waved his hand, pointing to the corpse on the ground: "The corpse, can it be dealt with?"

Murong Lengyue nodded obediently and got ready to clean it up. As she stood up, a low, eerie laughter made the two of them stiffen suddenly and look up in horror.

Two assassins appeared out of nowhere at the staircase not far in front, each holding a pistol aimed at Xiao Lin and Murong Lengyue. Their faces bore the characteristic cold, chilling look of killers, with gun muzzles pointed at them as they slowly approached step by step!

Xiao Lin’s eyes widened. Perhaps the pain had dulled his hearing, as he hadn’t realized anyone was near. He mustered his strength to stand up straight, shielding Murong Lengyue behind him. Swallowing, the blade in his hand swiftly spun in his palm. The two stood motionless, watching the killers approach, their pale faces twitching. Xiao Lin tried to slow his breathing as large beads of sweat rolled from his hair, making a soft pattering sound.

When one of the assassins reached Xiao Lin’s side, he looked at the corpse sliced in two on the ground and quietly inhaled, a trace of horror flickering in his eyes. Quickly, a layer of ruthlessness spread over his expression, and he gestured with his gun for Xiao Lin to move aside.

Murong Lengyue was behind him. If he moved even a step aside, the bullet could very well blow her head open. These people wouldn’t waste words with them. With this thought, Xiao Lin straightened his back, a mocking smile forming on his face.

"Trying to be a hero and save the beauty? You can barely save yourself." The speaker was a burly man who swung a fist fiercely at Xiao Lin’s lower abdomen. In the past, Xiao Lin could have easily dodged this seemingly intense punch, but at this moment, he didn’t have the strength to stand up, let alone dodge!

Bam! Xiao Lin’s whole body shuddered, bending over like a shrimp, blood spitting from between his tightly clenched teeth.

Bam! Just as Xiao Lin doubled over, the person in front of him swung a foot fiercely at Xiao Lin’s chin, the massive force lifting Xiao Lin off the ground, slamming him against the back wall and bouncing back to the ground.
