Chapter 491: Madeline’s Upgrade (3)

[Third Person Pov]

Peter sat slumped in one of the nearby chairs, head tilted all the way back as he carefully applied a fresh round of eye drops to his still-red, watery eyes. He winced at the sting, then muttered under his breath,

"As Ron Weasley likes to say... ’Bloody Hell.’"

Madeline stood off to the side, arms wrapped tightly around herself, still drowning in guilt while the others finished recovering.

Gwen slid on a pair of dark sunglasses and offered a dry smile. "So really, all it takes to take us all down is an effective flashbomb."

"Mom, stop feeling guilty," MJ said firmly. All eight of her eyes were blinking rapidly in uneven waves as they slowly adjusted and reined in their extreme sensitivity to light. "If anyone here is to blame, it’s Peter."

Peter’s head snapped toward her, eyes still squeezed shut. "Huh?! Me?! I’m not saying Mother-in-law here is at any fault, but why am I the one to blame?"

"Why the heck would you tell her to go all out without being in a safe space?" MJ shot back with mock irritation. She wasn’t truly upset—she was just needling him for the reaction. "Don’t we have a training room specifically designed for testing powers like this?"

"Oi! In my defense," Peter mumbled, turning his face away in classic avoidance, "I was expecting her to turn into a nightlight... not the second coming of Christ."

MJ and Gwen both broke at the same time, dissolving into helpless giggles. Even Madeline, who had been frowning with leftover guilt, felt the tension finally ease. Watching them laugh about it allowed her to crack a small, reluctant smile of her own.

Peter stood and walked toward Madeline, voice turning more serious. "Don’t let this be the moment you develop a fear of your powers. Use it as motivation to master them properly so it never happens again."

All three women simply stared at him with perfectly straight faces.

The words would have landed with real weight... if he had actually been facing Madeline. Instead he stood confidently in front of the empty air beside her, offering a warm, reassuring smile to absolutely no one.

Madeline shook her head, smiling despite herself at his usual brand of endearing chaos. She glanced down at her own hands and quietly agreed with the sentiment. She never wanted a repeat of that accident.

Gwen adjusted her sunglasses and rose to her feet, shifting back into professional mode. "I suppose I’ll continue with the analysis of the effects the cuttlefish genome has had on your biology. We’ve already confirmed enhanced intellect and bioluminescence. In addition to those, you’ve gained adhesive hands that allow you to cling to smooth surfaces, a malleable skeletal structure that grants you extreme flexibility, and lastly... active camouflage."

"Active camouflage?" MJ raised one hand like an obedient student, curiosity piqued. "How is that different from the regular camouflage we normally have?"

"Ours works by blending into the environment to achieve near-total invisibility—what we call adaptive camouflage," Gwen explained. "Yours functions on the same foundation, but goes significantly further. Thanks to the specialized chromatophores in cuttlefish DNA, you don’t merely adapt to the environment around you. You can actively change the color, pattern, and even texture of your skin—"

"Woah now," Peter interrupted with a joking grin, both hands raised. "Does that mean she is now allowed to say the N—"

He never finished the sentence.

Two simultaneous strands of webbing shot across the room and slapped firmly over his mouth, silencing him instantly. Gwen and MJ had both fired without hesitation.

His words came out muffled and indignant behind the webbing. ’What the heck?!’

"No one has time for your dark jokes, Peter," Gwen said flatly, annoyance clear in her voice. "And don’t interrupt me for something stupid like that again."

Peter mumbled a muffled ’I’m sorry’ and lowered his head in dejected defeat as the webbing slowly dissolved.

"As I was saying," Gwen continued, rolling her eyes before turning back to the hologram, "while we don’t really get much of a choice—we camouflage to match the space around us—Madeline can actively choose how she wants to camouflage herself. It could be environmental... or it could be for a social situation."

"So she can shape-shift her appearance to look like someone else," MJ concluded.

Gwen nodded. "With enough practice, it would be entirely probable."

She swiped upward on the holographic interface. A clean, organized list appeared, cataloging every ability drawn from Madeline’s polar bear DNA, bat DNA, and cuttlefish DNA.

Once the technical discussion finally wound down, Peter turned toward mother and daughter with a more practical expression.

"I’m going to have Aria construct a suitable training regimen just for you," he told Madeline. "Nothing too extreme—just some light exercises to help you get familiar with your abilities."

MJ promptly snatched Gwen’s sunglasses and slid them onto her own face. Deepening her voice into an overly dramatic growl, she declared,

"I’ll be your personal trainer. Now drop down and give me twenty!"

Gwen and Peter both started chuckling. Madeline simply stared at her daughter with a perfectly straight face.

...

After the ordeal with Madeline and MJ had finally settled, Gwen found Peter standing alone, staring off into the distance, clearly lost in thought.

"Penny for your thoughts?" she asked, gently snapping him back to the present.

"Honestly... I’m thinking about myself," Peter admitted with a half-formed smile.

Gwen gave him a long, flat stare, the words sounding almost narcissistic at first. But the look in his eyes told her this wasn’t one of his playful moments. A small smile soon replaced her blank expression.

"Care to elaborate?"

"This whole thing just had me thinking," Peter said, voice quieter than usual. "With everything that went on with the Fantastic Four, Lydia, Logan, Steve and Peggy... and now Madeline... we’ve been helping and upgrading the people around us so much that we’ve been neglecting ourselves a bit."

"What exactly are you planning?" Gwen asked, not yet following where he was going.

"It’s nothing crazy, trust me. I was just thinking of visiting the Ancient One later to learn a lot more about runes and spellcasting." He paused, eyes distant as he replayed old memories. "I was revisiting the battle with the Sentinels in my head, and it made me realize how lackluster my spells actually are."

"I see. I get what you mean." Gwen nodded slowly. "I suppose you do have a point. Are you heading out soon?"

"Honestly, I might, yeah. Especially since I’ve been particularly free with nothing major happening in the city so far." He gave a small shrug, already taking advantage of the rare quiet.

Gwen walked over and pressed a quick kiss to his lips.

"Careful there," she murmured. "You might have gone and jinxed it."

"Oh god, please don’t joke about it," Peter sighed in pure exasperation at the mere thought.

The two of them shared a small, quiet moment together before Peter finally decided it was time to head out.
