Chapter 517 - 448: Jason Tatum
The car drove along the spacious highways of Saint Louis.
"Michael, are you sure you want to make Phoenix the first stop on your world tour?" Chen Yu asked, gripping his phone in surprise.
On the other end of the line was Michael Jackson.
He had been preparing for this year’s world tour since the latter half of last year.
And yet, he had decided to make the first stop on his world tour in Phoenix, a city known primarily for its retirees.
He could have easily gone to Las Vegas, New York, or Los Angeles. The fanbases there were larger, and he could have achieved far greater success.
"No, Chen. You could say I was reborn in Phoenix, so that’s where I want to start again and resume my singing career." Michael Jackson’s voice on the phone was as unnervingly gentle as ever, but his tone was resolute.
Chen Yu smiled knowingly and didn’t press the issue. "Alright, I’ll see you next March, then."
’Reborn or not, it didn’t really matter.’ Chen Yu was just satisfied to see his idol getting back on the right track.
After a bit more small talk, Chen Yu hung up the phone.
From the front passenger seat, Larry Hughes twisted his head around to study Chen Yu with a curious gaze.
’That sounded like Michael Jackson on the phone.’
He’d seen on the news that Chen Yu and Michael Jackson had a special relationship; Chen Yu had even held his wedding at Dream Manor.
"Doctor Chen..." he began instinctively, wanting to ask something about Michael Jackson.
This was Michael Jackson, an American icon.
But before he could finish, Chen Yu held up a hand, cutting him off.
"I need to make a call."
Chen Yu called back the number that had tried to get through during his last conversation.
"Hello, Director Li."
It was an international call from Li Yuanwei.
After a brief conversation, Chen Yu said, "My apologies, I’ve been too busy lately, so I haven’t had time to visit China. However, I’ll definitely make time for a trip before March of next year. I think there will still be enough time. Even if the system is going to be reformed, it wouldn’t start until next season."
A short while later, Chen Yu hung up and stared straight ahead for a moment, lost in thought.
Just as Larry Hughes was about to speak, Chen Yu pulled out his phone again and dialed another number.
"David."
After some brief pleasantries, Chen Yu said, "Let’s meet in New York after Christmas to discuss it."
Li Yuanwei had already contacted Chen Yu many times and they had discussed numerous details. Chen Yu could sense his urgency.
And since David Stern also wanted to be involved, Chen Yu decided to have another good talk with him.
In the front seat, Larry Hughes guessed that the person on the phone was David Stern. He sighed quietly to himself and didn’t dare to ask anything.
After hanging up, Chen Yu finally looked over at Larry Hughes and asked what he had been about to say.
"It’s nothing."
Larry Hughes quickly shook his head, then thought for a moment before adding, "Dr. Chen, I really don’t know how to thank you. For you to take time out of your busy schedule to see Justin..."
Chen Yu waved a hand, signaling that no thanks were necessary. ’I’m here to take a look, but there’s a high probability I won’t find anything.’
’There’s really no cure for chronic rejection.’
A few minutes later, the car arrived at its destination.
It was a large house on the west side of Saint Louis.
Well, not that large. It was located in a modest Black neighborhood, with a factory and its large smokestack visible in the distance.
This was clearly not an expensive neighborhood.
Larry Hughes had probably bought the house during his rookie season.
And even now, with his five-million-dollar annual salary, he wasn’t considered rich by NBA standards.
After losing half of his five-million-dollar salary to taxes, he took home two and a half million. From that, he still had to support his family and pay for his brother’s treatment and care.
Medical treatment in the United States is expensive, and long-term care for a chronic illness is no small expense either.
A player of his caliber wasn’t landing any major commercial endorsements, so his income wasn’t as astronomical as one might imagine.
Larry Hughes got out of the car first and opened the door for Chen Yu.
Chen Yu met Justin.
A chubby, seventeen-year-old boy.
In contrast to the taciturn Larry Hughes, he was quite outgoing. He immediately expressed his admiration for Chen Yu and said that if he lived to grow up, he hoped to become a great doctor just like him.
It wasn’t surprising that a boy who had been sick his whole life would dream of becoming a doctor.
There were many people in the house.
In the NBA, it’s often said that when one person makes it, their whole entourage follows. You might not have had any friends or relatives before, but the moment you get into the NBA, they all come out of the woodwork.
Chen Yu saw Justin’s medical file, which was as thick as a large dictionary.
He had to go to the hospital every month for regular check-ups.
He also had a dedicated physician who made a house call every week to check on him and adjust his medication.
Due to the long-term medication, his body was already overwhelmed. He could barely move on his own and relied primarily on a wheelchair.
In the modest living room, all eyes, young and old, were fixed on Chen Yu.
The most nervous of all was Larry Hughes.
He knew Chen Yu was an orthopedic specialist who only dabbled in cardiology, but he was truly desperate.
So many doctors had told him that Justin’s problem was unsolvable.
For over a decade, he had sacrificed so much for his family and for his brother. He had no social life, no wild nights of partying—only constant training, striving to make it into the NBA, earn money, and pay for his brother’s treatment.
He loved his brother dearly, yet every doctor kept telling him that his brother’s condition was only getting worse.
He refused to believe it, but deep down, he knew his brother was slipping away.
So, he had come to Chen Yu, clinging to one last shred of hope.
Because Chen Yu also had the title of "Miracle Doctor," he prayed that he could find some hope with him.
