Chapter 49 | Goblin Attack
"What are you doing, kid?" one of the level 20 awakeners shouted at Alicar, his voice desperate and strained. "Come on, attack them! We need to defend the base while the lord is out!"
"???" Alicar looked at him with the most puzzled of expressions, completely lost and disoriented, but unfortunately the man didn’t have the time to explain further.
SLAM!
A Tank Goblin slammed into him at full force, sending him flying and forcing him to fight the monster, his body crashing against a stone wall with a sickening crack.
And as Alicar observed all the chaos, death and destruction around him, the only thought in his mind was the following: "I didn’t expect it to be this bad."
The goblins had green, warty skin covered in crude scars from countless battles, yellow, bloodshot eyes that burned with savage hunger and malice.
They wore tattered leather armor that barely covered their bodies, wielding rusty weapons that had clearly seen countless battles and claimed many lives.
Unfortunately for Alicar, he wasn’t invisible, meaning that after a minute only, a monster decided to single him out for attack, its eyes locking onto him with predatory intent.
It was a Small Goblin, its beady eyes locking onto him with predatory intent, and it lunged forward without hesitation, its rusted machete raised high.
Alicar immediately channeled the power of his mana to defend himself as he didn’t have the time to use Demon Guard, his body tensing for the brutal impact.
SLASH!
The goblin swung its machete, hitting Alicar’s side directly with brutal force, and while a normal awakener would be cleaved in half from the sheer power of the attack... nothing happened to Alicar.
There was a small wound, sure, and he could feel blood flowing, but the Small Goblin hadn’t pierced him deeply, its blade barely scratching his skin like a minor paper cut.
In fact, the goblin seemed confused itself, looking at its machete with bewilderment to comprehend why it didn’t cut through its prey like it should have.
And in Alicar’s mind, only one thing made sense, and with a wide smile on his face, he whispered: "Platinum Body..."
While the goblin who attacked Alicar was busy wondering what had just happened, Alicar didn’t sit idle for a single moment.
He summoned his staff from his storage ring with a thought, the Cinderwood materializing in his grasp, and lifted it to launch a row of elemental spells at the goblin, who was completely taken aback by the assault from this seemingly weak awakener.
BOOM!
The elemental attacks hit the goblin all at once, massively injuring it, and after a few more precise strikes, they actually killed it, its body collapsing to the ground in a heap.
The 200% damage bonus of Elemental Attack as well as his new Cinderwood Staff made each of Alicar’s spells a devastating attack capable of tearing through common-rank monsters with ease.
So devastating they were able to defeat monsters even five levels above him, a feat that would be impossible for most awakeners of his tier.
’That thing still injured me though,’ Alicar groaned as he gazed at his side, where a thin line of blood had formed. ’I’ll have to be more careful from now on.’
Still though, the fact Platinum Body managed to almost fully tank an attack from a level 15 monster, even a common-rank one, was absolutely incredible and beyond his expectations.
Common-rank monsters were said to have the same power as the average awakener of the same level, making them relatively balanced opponents.
While uncommon-rank and above monsters were most of the times stronger than awakeners of the same level, requiring more effort or a team to defeat them safely.
Still though, the notification that appeared before him brought a small smile to his face.
Ding!
[You have killed Lv.15 Small Goblin.]
Alicar’s experience point bar instantly shot up to 87%, one more monster and he’d level up, only a few minutes inside of the First Layer and he was already close to his next milestone.
But of course, killing a single goblin was far from over, as dozens of them still roamed the base, their green forms everywhere he looked.
Alicar didn’t even have the time to use his Cutting Knife to grab the goblin’s core to see what it would do for his Evolution Points.
He was immediately attacked by a Goblin Warrior, who swung its jagged sword at him with brutal force, forcing him to dodge at the last moment.
He launched another terrifying fireball at the goblin, the flames roaring through the air, but it simply raised its crude shields to tank it, the mist rising faintly from the impact.
The goblin grinned as it brought down its shield, its yellow eyes gleaming with savage triumph, swinging its sword at Alicar to cut him up.
Alicar simply lifted his hands and used Demon Guard though, Vorgath’s massive figure appearing before him to block the attack.
The Goblin Warrior’s expression shook for a split second as it noticed the massive demon-like entity, its eyes widening with primal fear, but it didn’t stop either.
It had orders it had been given, and to it, its death was nothing in the grand scheme of things, a small price to pay for victory.
Slash!
It swung, but as one might expect, the sword strike didn’t even go through Alicar’s guard, deflected harmlessly by the demonic aura.
In fact, he wasn’t pushed back in any capacity, his stance remaining firm and unyielding.
’Seven levels above me, huh, are these goblins this weak or is the fact I have a legendary-rank skill making their attacks impossible to hit me,’ Alicar thought for a moment, his mind analyzing the situation.
Though he didn’t remain idle for long, as he immediately dashed toward the Goblin Warrior, his body moving with practiced speed.
Alicar’s fist roared with crimson aura as he used Demon Fist, the power of Vorgath surging through him, striking the Goblin Warrior’s shields and pushing it back several meters from the sheer force of the attack.
Still though, the Goblin Warrior didn’t die, it got up, bleeding from multiple wounds, the aura in its eyes never fading, its determination unshaken.
But right as they were about to engage once again, a terrifying explosion erupted that shook the very foundations of the base.
BOOM!
One of the walls of the base was completely destroyed as a figure appeared behind it, its massive form silhouetted against the flames.
And at the sight of that thing, even Alicar’s eyes widened, his heart sinking into his stomach.
’Yeah, there’s no defeating that thing.’
