Chapter 1: Prologue — The Day Humanity Lost the World
For as long as we could remember, we believed the world was ours.
We had conquered the land and the oceans, reached past the sky, and built weapons that could erase whole cities. Nothing stood above us.
Then the Towers came.
They rose without warning — in our cities, in the deserts, out of the oceans, in empty places no one had ever walked. And around each of them, the air began to tear open into Gates.
The monsters came through next.
They poured out faster than we could count, and they did not stop. Bullets barely slowed them. Armies fired everything they had, and the creatures kept walking. Cities vanished under smoke and fire in a single afternoon.
We learned we could kill the weak ones. But the things that crawled out of the higher Gates were beyond anything we could throw at them. And every Gate we closed was replaced by more.
Nations lost their borders. Governments fell. Food and supplies dried up, and the human population began to collapse.
When extinction stopped being a fear and started becoming a certainty, the System appeared.
It spoke to chosen people all over the world, in the same words, at the same moment.
[The requirements have been fulfilled.]
[Humanity has been granted the right to resist.]
[Player Awakening has begun.]
Ordinary people woke with impossible power. Fire from empty hands. Strength that could lift the impossible. Wounds closing under a stranger’s touch.
We called them Players. They could enter the Gates, clear the dungeons behind them, kill the monsters, and grow stronger through the rewards the System gave — powers it called Abilities.
For the first time, we fought back. Players walked into Gates and came out alive. Cities were reclaimed. Monsters that had eaten armies were finally put down.
But Players were rare. The System chose barely one person in ten thousand, and most of them woke with nothing more than a spark. Only a handful ever grew strong enough to clear the deadliest Gates or climb the Towers.
Those few became heroes. Celebrities. National weapons.
And slowly, we understood what we had made. The strongest of them no longer held the power of a soldier or a weapon. They held enough power to break armies, topple governments, and erase cities.
Humanity survived the monsters. Then it learned to live beneath the protection of people it could no longer control.
No one guessed where the next danger would come from. Not a Gate. Not a Tower.
It would begin with a single Player — one whose power only awakened after he died.
[SSS-Rank Ability Awakened.]
