SSS Class Awakening: I Can Forge My Beast Soul Avatars

Chapter 36: The White Fox’s Shadow

Deep within the dark, suffocating void of his failing consciousness, Atlas drifted through cold water.

The agonizing heat from the blade near his spine had faded into a dull, numbing ache, but the darkness around him felt absolute.

Then, flickering like pale embers through the blackness, the System windows he had repeatedly swiped away during the chaos of the duel forced their way to the front of his mind.

[TACTICAL WARNING: 08 MINUTES AGO]

[Unregistered Sub-Spatial Artifact Detected in Host’s Proximity.]

[Item Analysis: Void-Corroding Needle Blade.]

[Hazard Index: Grade-S Necro-Parasitic Toxin.]

[Effect: Bypasses Physical Defense / Targets Host’s Soul Anchor Directly.]

’A Grade-S Toxin...’ Atlas thought, his mental voice trailing off like dust in the wind.

’So that’s what was on the steel. I was so focused on the gray beast that I completely ignored the alert...’

Outside, in the sterile glare of Operating Room 1, the surgical suite was in absolute chaos.

"His pulse is down to twelve!" a nurse screamed, her hands trembling as the diagnostic crystals above the operating table flickered from pale blue to a terrifying, steady blood-red. "The soul anchor is fracturing! The dark energy is using our restoration magic as fuel!"

The chief surgeon’s face was slick with sweat, his fingers black and numb from the energy backlash. "Prepare the soul-sealing clamps! If we can’t isolate his core, his body is going to collapse in seconds—"

Before the surgeon could finish his order, a sudden, heavy pressure erupted from within Atlas’s chest.

Inside the dark expanse of Atlas’s soul space, Skull’s skeletal form stood over the glowing, fractured anchor of their shared bond.

The shadow wolf’s crimson eyes flared with a fierce, possessive brilliance. Feeling the necro-parasitic curse eating away at his tamer, Skull lowered his broad head and opened his jaws wide.

An ancient, instinctual engine hummed to life within the wolf’s core — an ability unlocked the moment he had swallowed Gregory’s mutated beast whole.

A brilliant bronze System interface materialized directly over Atlas’s fading vision, its text burning through the darkness with absolute clarity:

[UNIQUE BEAST ABILITY TRIGGERED: GLUTTONY (GRADE S)]

[Ability Mechanics Overview:]

[1. Primary Function: Allows the Beast Entity to consume, process, and completely break down hostile biological, magical, or spatial anomalies.

2. Assimilation Engine: The Beast Entity does not merely destroy consumed energy; it assimilates the core structural properties into its own matrix.

3. Absolute Immunity: Once an anomaly or toxin is fully digested by the Beast Entity, the entity, and by extension, the bonded Tamer through the Soul Link — develops total, permanent immunity to that specific energy signature.]

’Gluttony...?’ Atlas realized, a faint wave of comprehension washing over his mind.

’He didn’t just devour that monster to win the fight... he absorbed its entire metabolic structure. And now he’s using it on the poison...’

Across the soul link, Skull acted as an absolute biological filter.

The shadow wolf drew the surging Void Toxin out of Atlas’s central nervous system, pulling the black, wispy tendrils of the curse across the spiritual bridge and straight into his own abyssal stomach.

In the physical world, the medical staff gasped in sheer shock.

The thick, blue-black veins bulging across Atlas’s neck, face, and collarbones stopped throbbing.

Slowly, the dark, ink-like fluid began to recede, flowing backward through his bloodstream and vanishing into his chest as if being pulled by an invisible, powerful vacuum.

The blackened, rotted flesh around his spinal entry wound smoothed over, the foul stench of the wound vanishing instantly.

"What in the world..." the chief surgeon stammered, dropping his hands as the diagnostic crystals rapidly shifted from dark red back to a bright, healthy emerald glow.

"Doctor! Look at the monitors!" the nurse yelled, her voice breathless. "Heart rate stabilizing... 55... 68... 72 beats per minute! His soul anchor is repairing itself!"

[TARGET TOXIN ASSIMILATED: 100%]

[Void-Corroding Toxin Successfully Digested by Beast Entity: Skull.]

[PASSIVE UNLOCKED: Total Immunity to Lower-Abyss Void Toxins granted to Tamer and Beast.]

[Soul Anchor Status: Stabilized.]

The chief surgeon stared down at Atlas, whose breathing had transformed from ragged gasps into deep, steady rhythm.

The physician wiped the cold sweat from his forehead with a trembling forearm, letting out a long, shuddering exhale.

"Cancel the soul-sealing clamps," the doctor whispered, his voice shaking. "I don’t know what kind of anomaly just occurred inside that boy’s body... but the crisis is over. Transfer him to the recovery ward immediately."

Outside the heavy double doors of the Intensive Care Unit, the broad corridor was cold and quiet.

Rex paced back and forth across the polished floorboards like a caged predator, his heavy leather boots making a sharp, rhythmic sound against the stone. His knuckles were raw, bruised, and caked with dried blood from his beatdown of Gregory.

"Sit down, Rex. You’re drawing eyes," Cassandra said quietly from her seat on a nearby wooden bench.

She held the dark, narrow blade Gregory had used, now securely wrapped in a thick, velvet-lined containment cloth rested across her lap.

Her emerald eyes were fixed on the floor, her dark-purple hair falling over her shoulders and casting a deep shadow over her face.

"How can I sit down?!" Rex snapped, spinning on his heel, his chest heaving.

"Atlas is in there bleeding out from some illegal, black-market curse, Crosswell is nowhere to be found, and that bastard Gregory was laughing while they dragged him away! The whole thing was a setup!"

"I know it was a setup," Cassandra replied softly. Her voice carried no heat, but the underlying coldness in her tone made Rex stop in his tracks.

Rex looked down at her, his brows furrowing as he noticed her hands. She was gripping the velvet cloth so tightly her knuckles had turned completely white, her entire frame trembling with a faint, restrained rage he had never seen from her before.

"Cassandra... what’s wrong with you?" Rex asked, his aggressive posture softening slightly. "You’ve been acting strange ever since you came back from the lower concourse."

Cassandra didn’t look up immediately. She slowly unwrapped a small corner of the velvet cloth, exposing the base of the dark guard where the inverted triangular crest — three weeping eyes surrounding a broken crown—was etched into the metal.

"I know this mark," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the hallway lights.

"You recognized it in the arena," Rex said, stepping closer and leaning down. "You once said it was a syndicate mark. What syndicate? Is it an underground guild operating in the capital?"

"I don’t know their name," Cassandra said, her voice cracking slightly as her eyes drifted into the distance, unseeing. "I don’t know who leads them, or how deep their roots run inside this academy. But I know what they do."

She took a slow, shaky breath, her jaw tightening as she forced the memories down.

"When I was seven years old, my family’s estate was targeted," she began, her words dropping into the quiet hallway with devastating weight.

"I come from a branch of the White Fox Clan. We weren’t a grand warlord house, but our bloodline carried rare spiritual perception traits. One night, during a storm, the perimeter barriers were cut from the inside. They didn’t come to rob us. They didn’t come to negotiate. They came to eradicate."

Rex remained completely silent, the anger draining from his face as he listened.

"They wore dark coats, moved like shadows, and carried weapons stamped with this exact seal," Cassandra continued, her finger hovering barely a millimeter above the etched weeping eyes.

"In less than an hour, they slaughtered half of my clan. My mother hid me inside a sealed sub-spatial cabinet beneath the floorboards. I spent six hours in the dark, watching through a narrow gap in the wood as people wearing this mark wiped out everything I knew."

She closed her eyes, a single, quiet breath escaping her lips before she pulled her hands back and carefully wrapped the blade back up.

"That night taught me to watch everything," she said, opening her eyes, her emerald gaze hardening into cold iron.

"It taught me to study how people move, how they lie, and how they hide their true intent. When I saw the weapon Gregory dropped on the arena floor, I didn’t need a textbook to tell me what it was. I recognized the brutality behind it."

Rex stared at her for a long moment before letting out a low breath, running a hand through his hair. "So Gregory wasn’t just some crazy student throwing a tantrum over class ranks. He was working for the same monsters."

"He was a tool," Cassandra corrected, her voice cold. "A disposable piece used to test Atlas’s foundation and force a strike while the arena was distracted. And the fact that they managed to coordinate this during an official academy duel means..."

"Means they knew how to clear the board," a heavy, familiar voice echoed from the end of the corridor.

Rex and Cassandra both snapped their heads toward the sound.

Walking down the hallway, his long coat swaying with every heavy step, was Mr. Crosswell. His face was unusually grim, his jaw set tight, and a faint smear of dark soot marked the cuff of his left sleeve.

Behind him walked Seraphine, her usual relaxed, playful demeanor completely gone, replaced by a sharp, vigilant gaze.

"Mr. Crosswell!" Rex barked, stepping forward. "Where the hell were you?! Atlas almost died out there!"

"I am aware," Mr. Crosswell said, stopping before the two students. His voice was heavy with a dangerous, quiet fury.

"A false emergency signal was triggered at the eastern perimeter area right before the second match began. A high-grade mana distortion that required immediate instructor intervention. Seraphine and I were drawn away to secure the perimeter boundary."

He looked down at the velvet-wrapped package in Cassandra’s hands, his eyes narrowing slightly as he recognized the shape.

"They staged a perimeter breach to pull the faculty away from the amphitheater," Seraphine added, her voice dropping an octave.

"It was a deliberate, synchronized strike. Whoever is pulling the strings behind Class 5D has deep reach inside the campus."

Before Rex could vent his frustration, the heavy double doors of the ICU swung open, and the chief surgeon stepped out into the hallway, pulling off his surgical mask.

"Instructor Crosswell," the doctor said, bowing his head slightly.

"How is he?" Crosswell asked immediately, stepping past Rex. "Is the student stable?"

The surgeon hesitated, looking at his own hands before looking back up at the group.

"If you had asked me ten minutes ago, I would have told you to prepare a casket. The weapon carried a Grade-S necro-parasitic curse. But... something impossible happened inside the operating room."

Cassandra leaned forward, her heart skipping a beat. "What happened?"

"Something triggered a complete, internal purge," the doctor explained, his voice still filled with disbelief.

"It drew the curse out of his nervous system and completely eradicated it. The toxin is entirely gone. His soul anchor is fully stabilized, and his vital signs are back to optimal levels. He’s sleeping off the physical exhaustion in Ward 4."

Rex let out a massive, booming laugh, slapping his knee in pure relief. "I knew it! That guy is too stubborn to die from a simple poke!"

Cassandra let out a long breath she didn’t realize she had been holding, her shoulders finally relaxing.

Mr. Crosswell nodded slowly, though his grim expression didn’t soften. He turned his gaze toward the dark windows at the end of the corridor, looking out over the expansive, shadowed grounds of the academy.

"He survived the strike," Crosswell said quietly, his eyes cold. "But the shadow moving behind this school just showed its hand. Class 5E officially secured the duel... but the real battle has only just begun."
