Chapter 342: Sanctuary Ardent 2
"Not alone," she answered. "But with Helion Bastion Twelve, Larkspur Haven, Arcturus family support, and time, yes."
Astra looked at the orbital display.
"We need the sanctuary’s systems now."
A Compact cruiser had broken through the outer screen and was moving toward the transport route.
Solenne’s ships were turning to intercept it, but doing so weakened the center of her line.
Aurelian watched the battle for only a moment before making his decision.
"I accept the emergency obligations."
The central structure brightened.
"Identity confirmed. Responsibility accepted. Emergency successor protocol complete."
The floor beneath them vibrated as old systems began waking throughout the mountain.
"Sanctuary authority transferred to Commander Aurelian Arcturus."
Eirenne’s projection flickered.
Then her eyes widened slightly.
"I have access."
"Defenses?"
"Coming online."
Above them, Solenne prepared to send another cruiser into the path of the Compact ship threatening the transports.
Before she gave the order, new signals appeared across the system.
Old weapon platforms hidden inside Sanctuary Ardent’s outer structure opened for the first time in centuries.
Armored panels withdrew from the mountain.
Targeting arrays turned toward orbit.
The Compact cruiser had only enough time to change course before the first sanctuary battery fired.
A heavy beam crossed the evacuation corridor and struck the ship near its engines.
Its rear shields collapsed at once.
A second shot entered the exposed section and tore through the cruiser’s propulsion block.
The ship drifted away from the transport lane, burning from several open decks.
More defense platforms activated around the sanctuary.
Solenne stared at the new icons appearing on her display.
Then Aurelian’s channel opened.
"Solenne, Sanctuary Ardent is under our control."
Her expression relaxed by a small but noticeable amount.
"That would have been useful ten minutes ago."
"I’ll try to plan ancient authority transfers more carefully next time."
"I would appreciate that."
Eirenne sent the sanctuary’s firing map to the fleet.
Solenne studied it quickly.
The defense platforms were old, but they were far stronger than anything the Compact expected to face. Their coverage was limited, and several batteries were still offline, but the evacuation corridor now had proper protection.
"Shift the fleet inward," Solenne ordered. "Let the sanctuary carry the center. We’ll strike the outer formation before they understand what changed."
Her ships moved immediately.
For the first time since the Compact entered the system, Solenne was no longer forced to hold one narrow line.
The Compact commanders reacted more slowly.
Their first formation had already committed to the advance, and the second was still crossing the old station field. Neither had expected Sanctuary Ardent itself to open fire.
That mistake cost them.
The sanctuary batteries targeted the ships closest to the transports while Solenne’s fleet moved against the exposed side of the larger formation.
Fighters swept across its outer escorts.
Cruisers fired into shield sections already weakened by the old defense platforms.
Several Compact ships tried to turn away at the same time, blocking one another and breaking the shape of their formation.
They were not foolish, but they had entered the battle with a plan that no longer worked.
Marshal Orvek Taran’s forces had expected a damaged sanctuary and a trapped fleet.
Instead, they had found a defended Human stronghold waking beneath them.
Aurelian watched the battle from the archive.
"Can the defenses hold?"
"For now," Eirenne answered. "But several power systems are still unstable, and the Compact has more ships outside the system."
"Then we use the time."
He turned back toward the Continuity Vault display.
The sanctuary was his responsibility now, at least until its people could build a government of their own.
That meant the hidden population could remain safely asleep.
It meant the upper halls could receive full medical authority.
It meant Neris could use sealed transport routes the Compact had never found.
Most importantly, it meant Solenne no longer had to defend the evacuation corridor alone.
Aurelian opened a channel to Vaela.
Her answer came quickly.
"What happened? Every medical system just unlocked."
"I completed the sanctuary’s successor review."
There was a pause.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Sanctuary Ardent accepted me as its emergency commander."
Vaela was silent for a few seconds before speaking again.
"Can you stabilize the preservation halls?"
"Eirenne is doing it now. We also found reserve halls beneath the sanctuary."
"How many?"
"More than forty-three thousand."
This time, the silence lasted longer.
When Vaela finally answered, her voice was quieter.
"They survived?"
"Yes."
Aurelian let her have that moment before continuing.
"Do not wake them yet. We’ll finish evacuating the unstable cases first, secure the system, and prepare proper support."
"I understand."
"Neris will receive access to new cargo routes. Use them as soon as Eirenne confirms they’re safe."
Vaela took a breath.
"Understood, Commander."
The title sounded different to her now.
Not because his rank had changed, but because Sanctuary Ardent itself had recognized him.
Aurelian ended the channel and looked toward Astra.
"We came here to stop the Compact from destroying the sanctuary."
Astra glanced at the active archive around them.
"We did more than that."
"Yes."
He looked at the population count, the Continuity Vault, and the battle still unfolding above.
They had gained control of Sanctuary Ardent, but control was only the beginning.
More than eighty thousand people were now tied to the future of the Crownward March. The Compact would not abandon a loss this large, and Saevor Drann would understand the danger once he learned that the sanctuary’s hidden systems had accepted a Human commander.
Aurelian turned toward the exit.
"We’ve seen enough for now. Copy the archive index and keep the reserve halls sealed."
Eirenne followed beside him.
"Already underway."
"What about the Continuity Vault?"
"Locked, but no longer inaccessible. You can open it when the battle is over."
Aurelian nodded.
There was no point discovering every secret while the people above were still in danger.
As he and Astra left the central archive, the old sanctuary continued waking behind them. Power moved into sealed systems, hidden routes opened across the mountain, and forgotten defense platforms turned toward the Compact fleet.
For centuries, Sanctuary Ardent had waited for Human command to return.
Now it had.
And in orbit above the mountain, the Drael Compact was beginning to understand that the easy recovery operation they had planned had turned into a battle against a fortress they had never truly controlled.
