Chapter 339: Human Authority Required 3
"Another hidden level."
Astra checked the evacuation channel while studying the latest updates.
"We should not all go."
Aurelian agreed.
He opened a communication channel to Vaela.
"How stable is the reactor supply on your side?"
"So far, it’s stable," Vaela replied. "The preservation halls are receiving more power than before, and the systems have stopped losing energy."
"We found another control level beneath the reactor. I need to investigate it."
There was a short pause before Vaela answered.
"Do not stay down there for long. Some of the awakening systems are requesting permissions we do not have."
That settled the decision.
Aurelian turned toward Rhoswen.
"You stay here. Guard the prisoners and make sure the reactor stays secure."
She looked toward the newly opened stairway before looking back at him.
"You’re going down there without the shield."
"I have Astra."
Rhoswen didn’t look convinced.
Astra stepped forward.
"I’ll bring him back."
Rhoswen frowned.
"That sounds like something people say right before everything goes wrong."
Aurelian decided not to comment on that.
"Eirenne, lead the way."
Her projection appeared near the top of the staircase. It looked brighter than before as more of the ancient systems came online under her control.
"I can restore the lighting."
Old lamps built into the walls came on one after another, slowly pushing back the darkness and revealing a wide spiral staircase that stretched far below the main reactor chamber.
Without wasting any more time, Aurelian and Astra started down.
The temperature dropped as they descended. After the first level, the constant rumble of the reactor faded behind thick walls until only a faint vibration remained beneath their feet.
The staircase passed several heavy doors built into the stone.
Each one carried old Human markings.
Eirenne could read them even though she still couldn’t unlock them.
"Reserve power storage," she explained as they passed the first door.
Aurelian nodded and kept walking.
The second door was marked as an emergency command relay.
The third had no name at all.
Its surface was completely plain, with no symbols or markings to explain what was hidden behind it.
Neither of them stopped.
The staircase continued for several more levels before finally ending inside a circular control room.
Unlike the upper sections of the sanctuary, this room showed no signs that the Compact had ever entered it.
Dust covered the floor.
Every console remained dark.
The walls were untouched.
Nothing had been damaged or forced open.
Only a single narrow terminal stood in the center of the room.
Beside it waited a pale scanner.
Aurelian walked toward it.
"Is this the verification point?"
"Yes," Eirenne answered. "This system is completely isolated. I can’t access it until you complete the verification process."
Astra slowly looked around the room.
"Do you know what it checks?"
"No."
There was no point delaying any longer.
Aurelian placed his hand against the scanner.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then a thin band of pale light swept across his palm before slowly moving up his arm and across his face.
The room remained completely silent.
No voice greeted him.
No warning appeared.
A second light activated beneath the floor.
It moved around him in a slow circle while silently gathering more information.
Astra watched every movement, one hand resting near her weapon in case something unexpected happened.
Several long seconds passed.
Finally, the dark terminal flickered to life.
Lines of text appeared across the screen.
Biological Human lineage confirmed.
Command compatibility accepted.
Sanctuary authority transfer available.
Aurelian read the last line twice before speaking.
"Eirenne."
"I see it."
"Can the sanctuary transfer full authority to me?"
She immediately began examining the newly unlocked information.
"Not automatically."
"What is it waiting for?"
"There appears to be another requirement."
More lines appeared on the screen.
Current sanctuary command population unavailable.
Emergency successor protocol active.
Primary claimant must enter central archive for final review.
Almost at the same moment, a deep mechanical sound echoed through the chamber.
Both Aurelian and Astra turned toward the far wall.
A hidden door slowly slid open.
Beyond it was another corridor.
Unlike everything else they had seen below the reactor, this passage was brightly lit.
The lights had apparently never failed.
The hallway stretched far into the mountain, clean and untouched, as though someone had expected people to walk through it one day.
Astra stepped beside Aurelian.
"How far does it go?"
Eirenne searched through the new sections of the sanctuary map that had just become available.
Her projection became completely still.
When she finally spoke, her voice carried something that almost sounded like surprise.
"Much farther than the Compact ever realized."
The newly revealed map expanded again.
This wasn’t just another hallway.
It connected to an entire hidden section beneath Sanctuary Ardent.
There were sealed command archives.
Reserve medical halls.
Emergency operations centers.
Storage facilities.
And one enormous chamber with a single name written across it.
Ardent Continuity Vault.
Aurelian stared at the display.
The Compact had controlled this sanctuary for years.
They had searched it.
Studied it.
Built around it.
Yet they had never discovered this entire section hidden beneath their feet.
He checked the evacuation timer before looking back toward the open corridor.
They had come here to save the people sleeping inside the preservation halls.
Now they had found the part of Sanctuary Ardent that had been built to decide what happened after those people finally woke up.
Far above them, Solenne was still fighting.
Behind them, Neris had already begun moving the first survivors toward safety.
Time was still against them.
Even so, this discovery couldn’t be ignored.
If the sanctuary really intended to transfer its authority, then whatever waited inside the archive could shape everything that happened next.
Aurelian looked at Astra.
She simply nodded.
There was no need for a longer discussion.
Together, they stepped through the newly opened doorway.
"Show me the way to the archive."
Eirenne moved ahead of them, her glowing projection leading the way through the untouched passage.
"This way."
The corridor stretched deeper into the mountain, and with every step, Sanctuary Ardent slowly began revealing the secrets it had hidden from everyone else for centuries.
