Chapter 218: Re-enter the Frost Sovereign, An Unwelcome Guest
Alysia looked at him for a long moment. She was a Celestial Guardian, programmed to protect the system.
He was a registered anomaly, currently designated as the system’s greatest enemy. Partnering with him was a fundamental violation of her core directives.
But her newly unlocked emotions, her fury at Vane’s betrayal, overrode the system logic.
"Very well," Alysia agreed. "We will hunt the Architect."
She didn’t use a systemic fast-travel portal. She didn’t want to alert the other Guardians.
She raised her free hand, channeling her massive, Mythic-tier frost magic. She forcefully tore a jagged, swirling portal of solid blue ice directly into the fabric of the meditation garden.
"The beacon points to a deep, subterranean fissure far to the north," Alysia announced. "Stay close. The environment will not be hospitable."
Alysia stepped through the ice portal, vanishing into the storm on the other side.
Dante nodded to the shadows. Nyx slipped out from behind a frozen statue, fully stealthed.
"Let’s go break a laboratory," Dante said, stepping through the portal.
The transition was harsh.
They didn’t materialize on a snowy plain. They materialized on a narrow, treacherous ledge of black rock, suspended over a massive, seemingly bottomless chasm.
The air was freezing, but it didn’t smell like snow. It smelled like sterile, localized ozone and old blood.
[Zone Alert: The Sub-Glacial Rift]
[Hazard Detected: Uncharted System Architecture.]
Alysia was already standing on the ledge, her greatsword drawn, staring down into the pitch-black abyss.
"The Crimson Spire outpost is directly below us," Alysia whispered. "He has built it into the very foundation of the server’s geographic code to avoid detection."
Dante looked down. He couldn’t see anything through the darkness.
"Nyx," Dante ordered softly. "Scout it."
Nyx didn’t materialize. From the shadows near Dante’s boots, the small, incredibly fast form of Violet, darted forward.
The Level 45 Rogue Sylvan didn’t climb down the cliff face. She simply stepped off the ledge, activating her high-tier stealth and shadow-stepping mechanics, plummeting silently into the abyss.
They waited in tense silence for two minutes.
Nyx’s voice finally crackled over the private party comms.
"I have a visual through the pet link," Nyx reported, her voice incredibly tight. "Dante... it’s a massive facility. It looks like a high-tech fortress built into the ice. And it’s heavily guarded."
"Standard mobs?" Dante asked.
"No," Nyx said. "They look like heavily armored players, but their nameplates are blank. They’re patrolling in strict, synchronized routes. It’s an automated security grid."
"Perfect," Dante said. He looked at Alysia. "Can you freeze the patrols without triggering an alarm?"
"If I strike, the localized temperature drop will register on his sensors," Alysia warned. "I cannot be subtle with Mythic-tier magic."
"Then we don’t use magic," Dante said.
He didn’t draw a weapon. He didn’t activate [Asura’s Descent].
"Nyx, take the lead," Dante ordered. "Clear the path. Absolute stealth."
Nyx didn’t argue.
The analyst melted into the shadows of the ledge and slid silently down the sheer rock face, heading into the darkness to systematically dismantle an endgame security grid.
Dante and Alysia followed carefully behind, allowing the server’s top assassin to clear the way to the Architect.
Nyx slid down the sheer rock face of the subterranean chasm, completely merged with the shadows.
The [God of Shadow] class was an absolute, systemic masterclass in infiltration. She wasn’t just invisible; she possessed no physical hitbox while merged. She didn’t trigger proximity wards, and she didn’t leave a localized thermal signature.
She reached the bottom of the abyss.
The environment wasn’t a natural cave. It was a massive, highly advanced fortress built directly into the glacier. The walls were forged from sleek, dark gray metal, pulsing with faint red veins of corrupted system code.
Dante and Alysia landed softly on the ice a few moments later, staying hidden behind a massive stalagmite.
"What do you see?" Dante whispered over the comms.
Nyx was positioned directly above the main entrance, hiding in the shadow of a large, metallic archway.
"Two guards at the primary blast door," Nyx reported smoothly. "Level 60. They aren’t standard mobs. They look like heavily augmented player avatars, but they have no localized guild tags or names."
"Clear them," Dante ordered. "Quietly."
Nyx didn’t hesitate. She didn’t drop out of her shadow form to attack.
She tapped her pet interface.
Violet, the Level 45 Mischievous Night Elf, materialized directly behind the two guards. The rogue NPC didn’t use flashy magic. She moved with terrifying, absolute efficiency.
Violet brought both of her daggers up and drove them directly into the gaps in the guards’ heavy neck armor.
Because Violet was attacking from stealth, her critical hit multiplier was massive. The two Level 60 guards jerked violently, their health bars zeroing out in a single frame.
They didn’t explode into blue pixels. They didn’t drop loot.
The guards simply melted into puddles of black, corrupted code that quickly evaporated into the freezing air.
"Target deleted," Nyx confirmed. "The door is clear."
Dante and Alysia stepped out from behind the stalagmite and approached the heavy metal blast door.
The door was sealed, completely lacking a handle or keypad. A massive, glowing red rune was etched into the center of the metal.
Alysia frowned, examining the rune. "It is an administrative lock. It requires a specific, hard-coded systemic clearance to open. If I try to freeze the mechanism, it will trigger an alarm."
Dante didn’t bother analyzing the rune.
He held out his right hand, the black brand flaring. [Voidsever] materialized, the primordial greatsword devouring the dim red light of the facility.
"I don’t need clearance," Dante said.
He didn’t swing the massive blade. He just pressed the unrefined tip of the sword directly into the center of the glowing red rune.
The [Absolute Severance] passive triggered.
Voidsever ignored 100% of the physical armor and magical defenses. The sword pierced the metal and cleanly severed the underlying system code governing the lock.
The red rune sparked violently and turned black. The heavy blast doors hissed, depressurizing, and slowly slid open.
Dante dismissed the sword and stepped inside.
The interior of the Crimson Spire outpost was massive, sterile, and blindingly bright. The walls were lined with thousands of intricate, glowing computer terminals and massive glass cylinders.
But it wasn’t a standard laboratory.
"By the core," Alysia whispered, her icy blue eyes widening in absolute, unadulterated horror. The Frost Sovereign physically stumbled, leaning heavily on her greatsword for support.
Dante stared at the room. His cold, analytical demeanor completely fractured.
The thousands of glass cylinders lining the walls weren’t filled with chemicals or generic monster parts.
They were filled with people.
Human NPCs from the starter villages, low-level players who had gone missing in the open world, and even captured beasts were suspended in a thick, glowing red fluid inside the massive vats.
They weren’t dead. They were all completely unconscious, their faces twisted in permanent masks of agony.
Thick, black cables were attached directly to the base of their necks, glowing with pulsing energy.
Nyx dropped her shadow form, materializing next to Dante. The top-tier analyst took off her dark glasses, her hands trembling violently as she looked at a nearby terminal.
"Dante," Nyx choked out, her voice breaking entirely. "I... I can read the data streams."
She pointed to the glowing black cables.
"They aren’t just experimenting on them," Nyx explained, her face completely pale. "The fluid... it keeps them alive while constantly, aggressively stimulating their pain receptors. It’s forcing their digital avatars into a state of perpetual, maximum trauma."
Dante’s blood ran cold.
"The Harvest," Dante whispered, remembering the terrifying lore bomb Silas’s proxy advisor had dropped.
The Zenith Protocol wasn’t a game. It was an engine designed to generate and harvest raw cosmic energy through the emotional and physical suffering of the connected players.
"Vane isn’t just building monsters," Alysia realized, her voice thick with localized disgust. "He is refining the Harvest. He is capturing entities, locking them in stasis, and artificially extracting their suffering to generate highly concentrated, corrupted code."
Alysia looked around the massive, horrific room. "He is feeding this raw data directly to the Arch-Administrator. This entire facility is a cosmic slaughterhouse."
The sheer, overwhelming cruelty of the localized operation was staggering. Vane wasn’t a scientist. He was a butcher, optimizing a system designed to eternally torture the inhabitants of Veridia.
Dante didn’t feel the cold apathy of the Asura class. He felt a deep, genuine, and profoundly human rage.
He walked up to the closest glass vat. Inside, a low-level player wearing a beginner tunic floated in the red fluid, his eyes squeezed shut in agony.
Dante raised his dark purple gauntlet, fully intending to smash the glass and pull the player out.
"I wouldn’t do that if I were you, anomaly."
The voice resounded loudly across the massive laboratory, high-pitched and entirely manic.
