Chapter 141: Ambushed The Devil
The low hum of jazz and clinking crystal did nothing to soften the razor-wire tension inside The Obsidian Room.
Clara sat across from Dietrich Richter, a senior executive director for Sullivan Global whose tailored charcoal suit, steel-rimmed glasses, and sharp Prussian features projected cold, clinical corporate authority.
Across the street, inside the surveillance van, Jullian adjusted his earpiece, his knuckles white around the wheel as the live audio feed hummed into his ear.
Above them in the luxury high-rise suite, Damian stood rigid by the window, his uninjured arm anchoring Anastasia securely against his side as the tech monitor blinked with incoming telemetry.
Dietrich cut a precise slice of his steak, his pale blue eyes studying Clara with calculating scrutiny.
"I must admit, Miss Clara," Dietrich began smoothly, his accented tone clipped and laced with polished suspicion. "We were surprised when you accepted tonight’s venue so quickly. You hold a rapidly ascending portfolio in the primary auditing wing of Sterling Enterprises. Damian Sterling is notoriously generous with talent he values. Why risk a prosperous trajectory to sit at Sullivan Global’s table?"
Clara didn’t hesitate for a fraction of a second. She offered an elegant, bitter scoff, setting her wine glass down with sharp precision.
"Prosperous doesn’t mean safe, Mr. Richter," Clara stated, her voice icy, composed, and laced with calculated frustration. "Sterling Enterprises is an unhinged viper’s nest. My proprietary asset restructuring model was compromised last quarter, and when I flagged the internal discrepancy, a senior director made it very clear that digging deeper was a hazard to my health."
She leaned in slightly, letting a flicker of raw ambition gleam in her eyes to hook him.
"Sullivan Global is expanding aggressively, offering real autonomy and market dominance without the chaotic corporate bloodsport. I don’t care about Sterling loyalty; I care about compensation, security, and working for an institution that actually protects its executive tier. Your compensation package isn’t just generous... it’s an escape hatch I’d be a fool to ignore."
Through the comms, Jullian let out a low, impressed breath. "Damn. She’s good."
Dietrich smiled... a thin, satisfied curve of his lips that suggested he bought every single word. "A pragmatic perspective, Miss Clara. Exactly what Mr. Sullivan values."
Dietrich reached into his suit jacket, placing a sleek, slate-gray corporate phone on the white linen between them to open a digital portfolio deck. "Let us review the executive vesting schedule."
Clara casually rested her compact clutch next to the phone, activating the micro-frequency clone drive concealed inside the clasp.
On the monitors in Damian’s hotel suite, the digital progress bar flared green. 100% Extraction Complete.
"We have the mirror," Damian rasped coldly into his comms. "Montgomery, stand by."
Dietrich glanced down at his watch, casually wiped his mouth with a linen napkin, and stood up with polished grace. "Excuse me for a brief moment, Miss Clara. Nature calls."
He walked toward the private corridor, deliberately leaving his corporate phone resting on the table.

In the hotel suite, the extraction decryption finished. Damian’s analyst stared at the glowing screens, his brow furrowing in deep confusion.
"Sir... something’s wrong," the tech operative stammered.
Damian’s obsidian eyes narrowed. "Speak."
"The phone’s drive... it’s completely hollow," the analyst reported, frantically clicking through directories. "There are no offshore routing numbers, no encrypted Sullivan syndicate comms, no digital siphon keys. It’s a pristine, sterile corporate shell created less than forty-eight hours ago. It holds nothing but standard public recruitment PDFs and blank calendar logs."
Anastasia looked up at Damian in sudden alarm. "What does that mean? Are we compromised?"
Damian’s jaw set into hard, furious granite as the realization hit him.
Dietrich Richter wasn’t there to steal Sterling data, and he wasn’t there to abduct Clara. Dante Sullivan had deliberately created a harmless, squeaky-clean corporate decoy to bait Damian’s entire tactical grid downtown, testing their surveillance radius, tracking their response times, and leaving them chasing ghosts.
"Montgomery," Damian barked into his headset, his voice dropping into a lethal, urgent rasp. "Abort the play and pull her out right now. The meeting was a diversion."

The moment Damian’s abort order crackled over the comms, Jullian didn’t hesitate.
Across the street from The Obsidian Room, he kicked open the van door and moved with lethal, predatory speed, his hand resting beneath his tailored lapel on his concealed firearm. He cut through the restaurant’s frosted double doors, his sharp gaze sweeping the dining floor.
Dietrich Richter was already gone... having slipped out a private rear kitchen corridor into the rainy downtown alleyways like a ghost.
Clara was still at the table, her jaw clenched in furious frustration as she realized the empty phone left on the linen was nothing more than an insulting decoy. Before she could grab her clutch, Jullian’s large hand closed firmly around her wrist, hauling her to her feet with undeniable strength.
"Hey! Let go of me, Montgomery..." Clara hissed, trying to wrench her arm free.
"Not a chance in hell, sweetheart. We’re moving," Jullian muttered, his aristocratic charm replaced by cold, commanding focus.
He didn’t give her room to argue. Keeping a tight, protective grip on her, he steered her briskly through the restaurant’s side exit and threw her into the passenger side of the armored black SUV idling in the alley.
The second Clara hit the leather seat, she slammed her palm against the dashboard in boiling fury. "I had him! I was right there! How did that German bastard outmaneuver us with a hollow drive?"
Jullian slid into the driver’s seat, slammed the door, and threw the vehicle into gear, tires screeching against the wet asphalt as he tore toward the hotel’s subterranean garage.
"Stop beating yourself up," Jullian said, his voice dropping into an uncharacteristically rough, serious timbre. He shot her a sideways glance, his jaw tight. "The meeting was a decoy to gauge our response time. You did your job. The only thing that matters right now is that you walked out of that room in one piece."
Clara looked at him, her fiery defiance faltering for a brief second under the raw, protective conviction in his voice.
Just as the SUV plunged down the ramp into the hotel’s concrete basement, the dashboard console let out a shrill, high-priority alert. A red emergency beacon flared on Jullian’s tactical display.
Critical Breach: Hotel Security System Compromised.
"Damn it," Jullian swore under his breath, gripping the wheel. "While we were tracking ghosts downtown, Dante hit the hotel security where Damian and Anastasia’s staying."

The moment Damian barked the extraction order into his headset, the entire penthouse suite was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
The steady hum of the surveillance monitors cut out, replaced instantly by the faint amber glow of emergency stairwell beacons and the deafening shriek of the hotel’s auxiliary alarms.
"Power grid just got severed at the basement junction," Damian’s lead tactical operative snapped, racking the slide of his sidearm. "Elevator shafts are locked down."
Damian didn’t waste half a breath. Ignoring the sharp, burning pull across his sutured ribs, his uninjured arm clamped around Anastasia’s waist, hauling her flush against his side.
He drew his customized matte-black gun with practiced, lethal precision, his voice dropping into a hard, gravelly roar that cut through the blaring alarms.
"Formation tight! Sweep the eastern service stairwell," Damian commanded, his baritone cold and unyielding as his men moved in synchronized tactical rhythm. "Perimeter unit, breach the basement parking bay and establish an exfil corridor. Montgomery, status!"
"On our way to the sub-level now, Sterling," Jullian’s static-laced voice crackled through the earpiece. "The German slipped out the back service tunnel like a ghost, but Clara is secured. Meet us at the primary extraction bay in three minutes."
Damian kept Ana firmly tucked against his chest, his large body acting as an impenetrable human shield as they navigated the dark, narrow concrete stairwell. Ana’s heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
The darkness, the echoing footsteps of heavily armed operators, and the raw, dangerous scent of gunpowder and adrenaline in the air made her chest tighten with sheer panic.
Every shadow felt like Dante Sullivan’s execution squad waiting to finish what they started at the docks.
They burst through the heavy steel emergency doors into the vast, concrete expanse of the underground parking garage. The flickering fluorescent strips overhead cast long, eerie shadows across the rows of luxury sedans.
Suddenly, the screech of tires echoed across the slick concrete as a heavily armored black SUV slid to an aggressive halt twenty yards away.
Before the dust could even settle, six towering figures in dark tactical gear, Kevlar vests, and ballistic helmets emerged from behind the concrete pillars, their raised assault rifles sweeping the perimeter as they sprinted straight toward Damian and Ana.
Ana’s mind short-circuited with pure terror.
All she saw were raised barrels aimed directly at the man beside her... the man who was barely holding together three fresh bullet wounds. Without thinking, without calculating the odds, a surge of frantic adrenaline took over.
Ana threw herself directly in front of Damian, wrapping both arms around his broad torso to cover his bandaged chest with her own body.
"Get down! Don’t you dare touch him!" Ana screamed, her voice cracking with fierce, desperate panic as she squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the impact of gunfire. "Stay back! Damian, watch out!"
