Chapter 100: Declaration
"I am officially declaring my intention." Zen paused, allowing it to sink in. "I am taking every last one of my soul fragments back from you."
Total silence followed Zen’s declaration.
The five most powerful beings on the continent simply stared at the man sitting at the head of the table. For five centuries, they had convinced themselves that they were his protectors, his wardens, the reluctant saviours of a broken world.
But in just one single breath, Zen had shattered that illusion.
He was no longer their prisoner; he was the predator, and he had just made it clear that they were the prey.
Selene was the first to break.
Reeling from the exposure of her failed assassination attempt, the Sanctum Goddess threw herself forward. She slammed her hands against the cold obsidian table, her silver eyes wide and brimming with desperate tears.
"Take it," Selene choked out, her holy aura completely suppressed in a display of submission. "Zen, please. Take my fragment right now. If it will repair your core, if it will prove to you that my devotion hasn’t changed, I will surrender it willingly. Let me be the first to atone."
"Sit down, Selene," Zen commanded coldly.
Selene flinched as if he had struck her, but she didn’t immediately obey. "But I..."
"I said sit down," Zen’s voice dropped an octave, the First Mortal Ruler’s authority bleeding into the air. "You don’t dictate the pace of my reclamation. I am currently a Low B-Rank. If I siphon a raw, unmitigated Divine-Rank fragment from you right now, my mana pathways will violently detonate. You would kill me faster than the Void."
Selene slowly sank back into her chair, looking pale and completely crushed by his rejection.
Aurelia’s amber eyes gleamed with calculation. She smoothed her ruined golden gown, her hyper-intelligent mind already looking for a way to turn his declaration into a political win.
"If your core requires steady, incremental expansion before you can handle a full extraction, then you must remain here in the Crown Domain," Aurelia stated smoothly. "I have access to the continent’s largest reserves of refined mana crystals and high-tier Elixirs. I can build you a secure cultivation chamber deep beneath the palace. We will quietly stall the other Domains while you level up in safety."
"There is no ’quietly stalling’ anymore, Aurelia," Zen countered, shooting her idea down instantly. "Look at the sky. We are out of time for passive cultivation. I am not locking myself in a basement while the world tears itself apart."
"Then how do you intend to widen your core?" a calm, melodic voice asked.
Zen shifted his gaze to the far end of the table.
Lyra, the Goddess of the Aether Domain, sat perfectly still. Her star-woven cloak seemed to absorb the light around her, and the ambient gravity in her immediate vicinity was so heavy it subtly warped the air.
Unlike Aurelia’s manic obsession, Selene’s desperate guilt, or Valeria’s volatile loyalty, Lyra was entirely unreadable. She processed the world through logic, physics, and cosmic equations.
"You absorbed our ambient pressure in the ballroom," Lyra continued, her violet eyes locking onto his. "It was an impressive display of Primordial Breathing, but it was incredibly reckless. Ambient mana is chaotic. If you intend to reach the S-Rank threshold quickly, you require an overwhelming, concentrated source of hostile energy to break your limits. Where will you find it?"
"In the Fracture Zones," Zen answered without a second of hesitation.
Lyra’s eyes narrowed slightly. "The Fracture Zones are direct tears into the Void. And the more mana crystals you need, the higher the Zone’s rank."
"Which is exactly why I need my Vanguard," Zen said, gesturing to Valeria. "And why I need you all."
Zen pressed a button on the edge of the obsidian table. "Nyx. The map."
The Spymaster, who had been watching the exchange with a quiet, smug satisfaction, stepped out of the shadows.
She tapped her slender finger against the centre of the table. A massive, highly detailed holographic projection of the entire continent sprang to life, bathing the room in a sharp blue light.
However, the map was covered in violently pulsating red anomalies.
"These are the current active Fracture Zones," Nyx briefed the room. "Five days ago, there were twenty-seven across the five domains. Since the Emperor began actively siphoning his fragments and weakening the planetary anchor, that number has spiked to seventy-two. They are tearing open across every border."
Zen pointed to a massive, jagged red tear on the holographic map, located right on the contested border between Valeria’s Ares Domain and Lyra’s Aether Domain.
"The Abyssal Trench," Zen stated. "It is currently the largest active anomaly on the continent. The ambient Void energy leaking from it is highly concentrated, and it is spawning thousands of corrupted beasts by the hour."
He looked up, meeting the eyes of the five Goddesses. "I am going to march directly into the centre of that trench. I will use the concentrated Void energy and the slaughter of those beasts to forcefully widen my core and force a breakthrough to the A-Rank threshold."
"You are marching to the front lines?!" Aurelia stood up abruptly, her territorial instincts flaring. "Absolutely not! I forbid it! You are the Emperor, you are my fiancé, and you are far too fragile to be anywhere near a Fracture Zone!"
"I am not asking for your permission, Aurelia," Zen retorted. "And as of tonight, the engagement is suspended indefinitely. There will be no wedding while the sky is falling."
Aurelia looked as though she had been physically stabbed. She opened her mouth to argue, to scream, to demand he stay, but the crushing weight of his gaze silenced her.
"This is the new directive," Zen announced, pointing to the holographic map floating above the obsidian table. Scores of red anomalies blinked across the continent. "But we are not going to stretch our main armies thin trying to plug every single hole."
He zoomed in on the cluster of smaller, lower-tier zones scattered across the borders.
"Every Domain already possesses an ecosystem of independent combatants," Zen explained, his tactical mind dissecting the continent’s resources. "The guilds, the mercenaries, the streamers who dive into these zones for cores, loot, and broadcast views. We are going to weaponise their greed."
Zen looked around the table, projecting authority. "We will establish a unified Imperial Bounty System. We leave the minor, non-critical anomalies entirely to them. Subsidize the payouts heavily, offer high-tier artifacts, and create a cross-Domain leaderboard to fuel their competitive nature. Let the public handle the smaller fractures and get rich doing it."
He swiped his hand through the hologram, clearing the minor red dots and leaving only the massive, apocalyptic tears on the map.
"That frees up our elite forces to focus exclusively on the extinction-level threats. Like the Abyssal Trench," Zen said.
He turned to his right. "Lyra, Valeria. You will mobilize your elite heavy infantry and gravity mages. You will form a joint vanguard to secure the perimeter of the Abyssal Trench. You will hold the line against the beast horde and ensure the anomaly does not expand further."
Valeria nodded immediately, a fierce, bloodthirsty grin spreading across her face. "Consider it done, Emperor. Nothing will touch you."
Lyra remained silent for a moment, analyzing the tactical logistics.
Finally, she gave a slow, respectful nod. "The Aether Domain will comply. It is the most logical course of action to stabilize the sector."
Zen turned his attention to the Sanctum Goddess. "Selene. You will deploy your high-tier paladins and clerics to act as the Vanguard’s backline. You will provide healing and stamina recovery for the front lines. But hear me clearly: if a single one of your agents steps within fifty feet of my personal healer, I will personally shatter your core. Am I understood?"
Selene swallowed hard, bowing her head in deep shame. "You have my word, Zen. Sanctum forces will strictly run support."
"Aurelia," Zen finally looked at the Empress. "The Crown Domain is the wealthiest territory in the world. You will fund this expedition. Furthermore, you will bankroll and manage the new Imperial Bounty System. You will provide the necessary siege weaponry, the teleportation arrays, and the supply lines to keep both the Vanguard and the independent guilds fed and armed. You will remain here in the capital and manage the global logistics."
"You’re leaving me behind?" Aurelia whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying mix of sorrow and territorial rage. "You are taking them and leaving me here?"
"I am giving you the most critical role," Zen lied smoothly, expertly manipulating her ’Mind’ fragment’s desperate need for control and importance. "An army cannot march without supplies, and a global bounty network collapses without an apex administrator. If the Crown Domain fails to secure the economy of this war, the Vanguard starves, the mercenaries turn rogue, and I die in the trench. I am trusting my life... and the entire continent’s infrastructure to your management, Aurelia. Do not fail me."
Aurelia’s trembling stopped.
The manic light returned to her amber eyes, fully bought into his manipulation. She stood taller, her regal composure snapping flawlessly back into place. "I will not fail you, my Emperor. I will strip the treasury bare if I have to. You will have everything you need."
"Good," Zen said, stepping back from the table. "Nyx, coordinate the communication networks between the Domains. Broadcast the new bounty system on all streaming platforms and guild networks. I want the strike teams mobilised and the independent hunters hunting by dawn."
"It will be done," Nyx smirked, fading seamlessly back into the shadows.
Zen looked at the remaining four women. They were no longer fighting each other over a ruined wedding or a petty political slight. They were finally united, bound by their obsession and forced into compliance by his absolute authority.
"You are dismissed," Zen commanded.
