Chapter 34: That’s not something to be taken for granted
After Felyn agreed, the atmosphere inside the car was noticeably lighter.
Elowen still hugged Erik’s arm, but the small wariness toward Felyn had lessened. Felyn was no longer as rigid as before either, and every so often her body would unconsciously lean lightly against the person beside her whenever the car turned.
Erik looked at the two of them, then turned to Meira.
"There’s one more thing I’d like to ask for your help with."
Meira immediately set her teacup down.
"Go ahead."
"Would it be convenient for you to arrange a full physical examination for Felyn?"
Meira paused.
Erik didn’t notice that very small shift in expression and continued:
"Especially her eyes, the curse, along with her old injuries. Her feet also have a great many wounds from going barefoot for far too long."
He looked at Meira.
"Your hospital has better conditions than anywhere else. If this would trouble you, I can pay the treatment costs in full."
Meira still hadn’t answered.
Her green eyes only looked at Erik.
"You’re... asking me?"
"Mm."
"Not telling me to arrange it?"
Erik raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Is there a difference?"
Meira was silent.
For an ordinary person, perhaps there wasn’t.
But for her, there was a great deal of difference.
Meira had money.
Had status.
Owned four commercial centers along with a private hospital.
In the world of Succubi, she was someone that countless other women had to look up to.
But before men, that kind of status had never held much meaning.
Over the years of running the hospital, Meira had met a great many men.
Some were only ordinary Awakened, yet when they came for treatment they still viewed it as a given that the female Healers had to look after them.
Some hadn’t even finished paying their treatment fees before ordering a room change, a different doctor, and a complete replacement of all the food because they weren’t satisfied.
The Succubi around them still complied.
Because they were women.
And the other party was a man.
Even within the family, a single request from a man was usually treated as the final word.
But Erik was sitting before her, and he could easily have just said:
"Take Felyn for treatment."
Meira would absolutely do it.
She would even be happy to do it.
And yet he had asked whether it would be convenient for her.
And was prepared to pay.
Meira looked at him for a long while.
Erik finally started to feel something was off.
"Is it not convenient?"
"No!"
Meira answered so fast that her voice came out a bit loud.
Both Felyn and Elowen turned to look.
Meira immediately caught her own reaction, hurriedly gave a light cough, and adjusted her posture.
"What I mean is, it’s no trouble at all."
She tried to reclaim her composure.
"Felyn saved a great many people fifty years ago. Even without any connection to you, she deserves to receive the best treatment available."
Meira leaned forward slightly.
"I’ll personally arrange the best Healer team. Clothing, accommodations, medicine, along with whatever else is needed won’t be a problem either."
"You don’t need to pay."
Erik thought for a few seconds.
Then nodded.
"Then thank you."
Meira froze again.
Only for a second.
But Elowen saw it very clearly.
Her mother’s green eyes widened just a little.
Erik was also beginning to feel that something was off.
"Did I say something wrong again?"
Meira collected herself.
"No."
She shook her head.
Then the corner of her mouth slowly curved up.
The smile this time was different from her usual polite, social kind.
"It’s just... it’s been a very long time since I’ve heard a man thank me."
Erik was slightly dazed.
He looked at the three women in the car.
Elowen still clearly had emotions lingering from moments ago.
Felyn was the same.
And now Meira.
Only at this point did Erik truly realize something that five years of living in this world still hadn’t made him fully accustomed to.
The gap in status between the two genders was far too large.
So large that just asking a question that was perfectly normal on Earth was enough to astonish them.
Erik knitted his brows slightly.
’It seems the Primordial Succubus wasn’t wrong after all.’
If even basic respect had become a rarity, producing genuine emotional value really was very difficult.
But Erik had no intention of deliberately changing the way he lived just because he’d noticed that.
He was still himself.
"I asked you for a favor, so of course I should thank you."
Meira looked at him.
Erik said it very plainly.
But that very expression, the one that said this was simply how things should be, was what made her gaze soften.
"Alright."
Meira nodded.
"Then keep thanking me like that from now on."
Erik broke into a laugh.
"As long as you don’t find it bothersome."
"I won’t."
Meira answered almost instantly.
Elowen looked at her mother.
Her gaze immediately turned wary.
’This isn’t good.’
Very much not good.
...
About twenty minutes later, the car entered the grounds of Meira’s private hospital.
The main building stood over twenty stories tall, its exterior clad in white glass. On either side of the entrance were small gardens planted with vegetation that stabilized mana, and a few female Healers in white uniforms walked between the buildings.
The car slowly stopped before the VIP entrance.
Meira stood up first.
"Felyn comes with me. I’ll have someone begin the examination right away."
Felyn immediately grabbed Erik’s sleeve.
The action was pure instinct.
She had only just left the place where she had lived for fifty years.
And now she had to walk into an unfamiliar building filled with countless sounds she couldn’t see.
Erik recognized that unease.
He took her hand.
"It’s alright."
Felyn turned her face toward him.
"You’re not coming?"
"I’ll be there soon."
"Really?"
"Mm."
Erik gently squeezed her cold hand.
"Get a good checkup. Then wait for me."
Felyn was silent for a few seconds.
Only then did she finally let go of his sleeve.
"Alright."
Erik looked at Meira again.
"Sorry for the trouble."
Meira had been about to step out of the car but paused for a moment.
Then she turned her head, her gaze somewhat helpless but her smile more pronounced than before.
"Erik."
"Mm?"
"I already said. Don’t be so formal with me."
"Alright."
Meira looked at him for one more second before stepping out.
Before the door closed, she turned to Elowen.
Mother and daughter locked eyes.
Meira gave a very discreet wink.
Seize the opportunity.
Elowen understood immediately.
Her fair face quickly flushed red.
Erik was watching Felyn get out of the car, so he didn’t notice at all.
Click.
The car door closed.
The rear compartment instantly turned quiet.
Only Erik and Elowen remained.
The female driver up front was very professional.
A black partition slowly rose, completely separating the two halves of the car.
Erik looked at the partition.
Then turned to Elowen.
"What is your family doing?"
"I don’t know."
Elowen answered far too quickly.
Erik looked at her face, which was growing redder.
"Really?"
"Mm."
Even less convincing.
The car began to move.
Elowen slowly shifted over.
First her knee touched Erik’s leg.
Then a soft thigh pressed close.
One of her hands came to rest on his chest, her fingertips gently tracing across the combat suit that still bore traces of battle.
Erik leaned down.
"What are you doing?"
Elowen didn’t answer right away.
She only looked at him.
In her jade-green eyes there was still a bit of redness from the crying.
After a while, her hand rose and gently touched Erik’s cheek.
Her fingertips brushed across the skin.
As if only now was she truly confirming that he had come back safely.
"I was really scared."
Her voice grew quieter.
Erik was silent.
Elowen shifted even closer.
Her soft body leaned almost entirely against him, her full chest pressing against his arm.
"When the feed went dark, I thought about a great many things."
Erik wrapped his arm around her waist.
"I’m already back."
"I know."
Elowen looked at his lips.
Her breathing gradually grew warmer.
"That’s why right now..."
She bit her lip lightly.
"I want to take back something."
Erik raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
Elowen’s face turned even redder.
But this time she didn’t shy away.
The Succubus slowly turned her body, lifted one leg, and sat sideways across Erik’s lap.
Her soft waist settled neatly into both his hands.
Silver hair slid off her shoulder.
The distance between their two faces was only a few centimeters.
"On the fifth floor."
Elowen asked in a small voice:
"Do you still remember?"
Erik thought for a moment.
Then the corner of his mouth curved up.
Of course he remembered.
A kiss that hadn’t even had the chance to begin before it was cut short by a pack of monsters.
Erik’s hand tightened gently around her waist.
"I remember."
Her jade-green eyes immediately lit up.
Elowen leaned down.
Warm breath brushed against his lips.
But when only a sliver remained, she stopped.
Erik was a bit confused.
Elowen looked at him for a few seconds.
After everything that had just happened in the car, for some reason she suddenly felt the urge to ask.
"Erik."
"Mm?"
"If I want to kiss you..."
Both her cheeks flushed red all the way to her pointed ears.
"Do I need to ask for your opinion?"
Erik was stunned.
Then he burst out laughing.
"Of course."
Elowen was a little disappointed.
But right after, Erik had already pulled her waist in closer.
"It’s just that this time, I agree."
Elowen’s eyes immediately curved.
Both arms wound around his neck.
"Good then."
This time, she didn’t hesitate any longer.
