Chapter 316: The Noble Moon in the Sky, the Puppet of a Transaction
Ji Qingwu grabbed her face and turned it toward her, her gaze cast downward. The cold dampness in her eyes made Su Daiyue shudder.
"Just how many women has your father looked at with that kind of gaze?"
Su Daiyue’s pupils contracted sharply.
Ji Qingwu’s lips parted. "Has he looked at you like that, too?"
Su Daiyue retched violently. With no food in her stomach, she only brought up yellowish medicinal broth and bile.
Ji Qingwu backed away. There was a bronze basin of clean water on a shelf in the corner of the room. She began to slowly and methodically wash her fingers.
The vomit had corroded Su Daiyue’s throat, making her voice raspy and grating.
"I know you’re a good person. You’ll help me, won’t you?"
The only answer was the sound of water as Ji Qingwu washed her hands. Su Daiyue’s tone turned strange. "When I see those pure, compassionate eyes of yours, it just makes me realize how pitiful I am."
Su Daiyue’s eyes rolled upward to stare at the patterns on the canopy of the bed.
"But my father will like it. He likes girls who are noble and pure, like the moon in the sky. Just like he liked me, once upon a time."
As she spoke, Su Daiyue began to laugh, but her smile was more pained than tears.
Her eyes were burning hot, yet not a single tear fell. This feeling of being unable to release her emotions made Su Daiyue feel like she was suffocating.
She forced her eyes wide open, her hand letting go of the bed canopy. Instead, she began to pound her chest with all her might.
"Wei Tongyou."
Ji Qingwu lifted her gaze. Seeing Su Daiyue’s actions, she called out to the person outside the door.
Wei Tongyou quickly slipped inside and glared at Ji Qingwu, seemingly displeased at being called by her full name.
"Find a rope and tie her up."
Only then did Wei Tongyou see that Su Daiyue had torn open the front of her clothes, and the skin she had clawed at was seeping blood.
She steeled herself and stepped forward, but still grumbled relentlessly, "Why don’t you do it yourself? Why call me?"
Ji Qingwu leaned against the window opposite the bed. "Naturally, it’s because I’m not as skilled as you, nor am I as strong."
Wei Tongyou huffed. Although she was unhappy, she didn’t let it slow her down, quickly and deftly tying the woman up.
Ji Qingwu took a sky-blue porcelain vial from her sleeve pocket, poured out a variety of colorful pills, and picked out a green one.
"Give her this."
Wei Tongyou looked at the emerald-green sphere and frowned. "Even if you don’t get along with her, you can’t just poison her."
Ji Qingwu raised an eyebrow. "She’s already dying. What need is there for me to poison her?"
Su Daiyue seemed to have fallen into a state of chaos. Her limbs were tied securely to the bed, her forehead was slick with sweat, and the veins on her strained neck bulged prominently.
Ji Qingwu handed the pill to Wei Tongyou and explained, "This isn’t poison. It’s an anesthetic to temporarily take away her pain."
Hearing that it was an anesthetic, Wei Tongyou’s eyes lit up.
’This pill would be incredibly useful if given to soldiers on the battlefield,’ she thought.
Ji Qingwu urged her, "Quick, make her take it."
Wei Tongyou muttered, "Since she’s about to die anyway, what’s the point of giving her this medicine? It’s just a waste." But she still stuffed the pill into Su Daiyue’s mouth.
Ji Qingwu said, "She’s suffered more than enough. Let her have some dignity before she dies."
The medicine took effect quickly. Su Daiyue’s body relaxed, and her breathing returned to a normal rhythm.
Ji Qingwu walked over and put away the hairpin that had been left by the bedside.
"I’m going to make a trip to the Su Mansion."
’Not for her, but to verify my own suspicions. If they’re true, then even a thousand deaths won’t be enough for Su Fengyue to atone for his sins.’
As if she had heard Ji Qingwu’s words, tears welled up in Su Daiyue’s dry eyes. But even covered in a film of water, her eyes began to turn grey and lose their focus.
Ji Qingwu’s voice was light and ethereal, scattering by her ear.
"Are there any last words you want me to deliver to anyone?"
Su Daiyue’s face was drained of color, and she lay lifelessly on the bed.
"There’s no need. My whole life, I’ve just been a puppet in a transaction of power and pleasure."
Ji Qingwu watched her in silence.
Su Daiyue’s vision was grey and hazy, but her mind was like a revolving lantern, flashing with images from her life.
"My aunt was once the most favored concubine in the family, but she went mad not two years after giving birth to me. I wasn’t mistreated because of it, though. My father was very good to all his children. I was raised by a wet nurse."
Wei Tongyou crossed her arms. This sort of thing was quite common in aristocratic families.
Regardless of whether anyone was listening, Su Daiyue continued to speak.
"As I got older, I started to look more and more like my aunt. I noticed the way my father looked at me began to change. It was like adoration, like obsession. He started treating me with a special kind of care. He would even take me with him when he went to his private villa in the suburbs for banquets. All my sisters at home were envious of me."
Su Daiyue let out a sneer. "Until one day, my father got blind drunk and was helped to his room to rest. It was the first time I’d gotten my period, and I wanted to go back to the mansion. I was at a loss, so I went to find him. But when I got to the room, I stumbled upon the man who was supposed to be passed out drunk, wide awake, pinning down a girl about my age, and..."
She struggled to say the words. "He was calling out ’Yue’er’..."
As she said this, Su Daiyue’s teeth were chattering.
Wei Tongyou’s hands clenched into fists, and she threw a couple of uppercuts into the air.
Ji Qingwu frowned, a heavy feeling settling in her chest.
’It wasn’t just that I could empathize with Su Daiyue’s story; it was also because I thought of another woman who had endured a similar fate.’
’Unlike Su Daiyue, who had only watched from outside the window, that woman had been the one who was truly harmed.’
"After that, I pretended to be sick to avoid contact with my father. But every time he looked at me, it would make me remember that scene. Later, I found out how my aunt had gone mad. My father had taken her out to a banquet, but it was to ’serve’ other high-ranking officials."
"Do you know what it feels like to not be a person, but a piece of cargo that can be given away at any moment?"
"I was so afraid of becoming the second coming of my aunt... I thought that if I left the Su family and got married, I could finally control my own destiny. It was a fool’s dream."
"In the past, if my father told me to go east, I wouldn’t dare go west. Now, I can decide whether I live or die. I’m so happy..."
Su Daiyue smiled and closed her eyes, a tear trickling from the corner of her eye into her ear.
"You want to die? It won’t be that easy!"
Song Wei shattered the tranquility in the room. He had rushed back from who knows where, having lost one of his boots along the way. In his hand, he held a small jar.
He yanked her up from the bed. "Eat this and you’ll get better."
Wei Tongyou glanced at the jar and scrambled behind Ji Qingwu in terror.
’It’s rare to see this girl afraid of anything,’ Ji Qingwu thought, turning to look at her.
"What are you afraid of?"
Wei Tongyou whispered, "This Song Wei looks like a normal person, but why is he acting so crazy?"
Ji Qingwu asked, "What did you notice? What’s in the jar?"
Wei Tongyou said, "It’s a dead person’s ashes."
"That can’t be right. It just looks like a clay jar."
Wei Tongyou said, "The cremation urns from the Yizhuang are all this style. I’ve seen plenty of them, I guarantee I’m not mistaken."
Ji Qingwu frowned. "But I can see something red inside..."
