Xu Yishan nodded with a grave expression and said to Lin Feng, "You come with me!"

Then Lin Feng followed behind Xu Yishan into his study, where he saw a middle‑aged man bowing his head as he brewed tea.

This man was no stranger; he was none other than the Hong Sect’s Sect Leader, Bai Yuanshan!

"Mr. Bai, it’s you!" When Lin Feng saw Bai Yuanshan, his face showed some surprise. He hadn’t expected that the person who wanted to see him would turn out to be Bai Yuanshan!

Hearing the voice, Bai Yuanshan raised his head and glanced at Lin Feng, a complicated look flashing in his eyes.

After a long moment, as if mustering tremendous courage, Bai Yuanshan spoke with difficulty, "Lin Feng, long time no see!"

Lin Feng understood why Bai Yuanshan would have that expression. He knew Bai Yuanshan had probably already found out that the deaths of Bai Liancheng and Bai Youxian were connected to him...

But in that whole matter, Lin Feng didn’t feel he owed Bai Yuanshan anything. After all, Bai Liancheng and Bai Youxian had brought it on themselves; they had no one else to blame!

"Alright, since you’ve already greeted each other, I’ll say something fair..." Xu Yishan suddenly spoke in a somber tone. "We’re all brothers of the Hong Sect. Whatever you have to say, it’s best not to hide it. Put it all on the table, make things clear, so we don’t end up with misunderstandings!"

After giving Xu Yishan a slightly odd look, Bai Yuanshan fixed his gaze on Lin Feng and said in a deep voice, "Lin Feng, the reason I’m seeing you this time is that I have a few questions I want to ask you."

Lin Feng looked at Bai Yuanshan and nodded.

"Mr. Bai, I’ve always regarded you as an elder. Anything I can answer, I won’t conceal. Go ahead and ask."

Lin Feng’s voice was very sincere. Just as he’d said himself, he had no intention of hiding anything in response to Bai Yuanshan’s questions.

"Bai Liancheng, Bai Youxian—their deaths, were they connected to you?" Bai Yuanshan stared intently at Lin Feng and, sure enough, asked the question he most wanted answered.

As he spoke, Bai Yuanshan’s fists clenched, as if he were suppressing the anger in his heart... No matter what, Bai Youxian and Bai Liancheng were his closest kin—one was his uncle, the other his nephew. The fact that the two of them died on the same day nearly drove Bai Yuanshan mad when he learned of it.

Later, when Bai Yuanshan investigated the case, he gradually discovered that much of the evidence pointed toward Lin Feng... However, what kept Bai Yuanshan from exploding was that he also found out Bai Liancheng and Bai Youxian had been the ones to make the first move against Lin Feng. They’d even kidnapped several of Lin Feng’s female companions as hostages and tried to "have their fun first, kill them after"... In the end, that was what provoked Lin Feng’s thunderous retaliation, and the two were wiped out together!

When he uncovered that truth, Bai Yuanshan was stifled. If things really were like that, he had no grounds to make a move on Lin Feng to avenge them, and could only stay by Xu Yishan’s side, sulking in silence.

Over time, Xu Yishan naturally came to understand what weighed on Bai Yuanshan’s mind, which was why he wanted to bring Lin Feng over to mediate.

Lin Feng gave Bai Yuanshan a look, his expression very calm. He didn’t answer Bai Yuanshan’s question directly, but instead said in an even tone, "Mr. Bai, there’s only one thing I want to tell you. When it comes to them, my conscience is clear."

"Your conscience is clear?" Bai Yuanshan was taken aback, murmuring under his breath, "So it really is like that."

"Mr. Bai, I know you’re not feeling good inside, but regarding this matter, I truly have nothing more to say." Lin Feng looked deeply at Bai Yuanshan and spoke sincerely.

"I know..." Bai Yuanshan suddenly let out a sigh, seeming to age a few years all at once. His body slumped slightly into the sofa, and he didn’t raise his head to look at Lin Feng. In those eyes, heavy with the marks of time, a faint sheen of moisture suddenly appeared.

Even knowing that Bai Liancheng and Bai Youxian got what they deserved, he still found it hard to accept the situation of sitting in front of the killer yet having no grounds for revenge.

"Alright... Since you both already know what happened, this matter is not to be brought up again in the future!" Xu Yishan suddenly stepped in to smooth things over, speaking in a deep voice.

After nodding, Bai Yuanshan suddenly turned to Lin Feng and said in a low voice, "Lin Feng, I’ll probably step down as Sect Leader at the end of the year. If you have any thoughts about the Hong Sect Sect Leader position, remember to start preparing early..."

Lin Feng was slightly stunned, but Bai Yuanshan didn’t explain further. He rose directly from the sofa and left Xu Yishan’s study.

"Mr. Bai..." Lin Feng had intended to call out to Bai Yuanshan, but was stopped by Xu Yishan.

"Enough, let him have some quiet to himself. I still have a few things to say to you." Xu Yishan said calmly.

Lin Feng sat back in his original seat and turned his head toward Xu Yishan.

"Lin Feng, if you’re really planning to compete for the Hong Sect Sect Leader position, there are a few things I want to remind you of..." Xu Yishan looked seriously into Lin Feng’s eyes and spoke in a low voice. "I hope you’ll remember them."

Lin Feng nodded.

"The structure of the Hong Sect isn’t the same as the Qingzi Sect. The Hong Sect Sect Leader actually doesn’t control that much, because each branch hall—each division’s leader—usually holds most of the power and profit..." Xu Yishan explained in a level tone. "You need to understand that even if you really become Sect Leader, everyone will only follow your orders in name. In reality, you won’t have authority over many people."

Lin Feng froze for a moment. It wasn’t the content of what Xu Yishan said that surprised him, but rather the fact that Xu Yishan was suddenly telling him all this—as if he believed Lin Feng truly could become the Hong Sect Sect Leader?!

"Old Xu, why are you suddenly telling me all this?" Lin Feng looked at Xu Yishan with a wry smile and casually asked, "Don’t tell me you think I have a good chance of becoming Sect Leader?"

With a peculiar expression, Xu Yishan looked at Lin Feng and nodded seriously. "It’s not as simple as ’a chance’... Lin Feng, listen closely. As a brother I, Xu Yishan, have brought up, if you really step forward to vie for the Sect Leader position, no matter what, you have to win it. That’s your mission and your responsibility. Don’t you dare embarrass me!"

Lin Feng could only smile bitterly.

Then Xu Yishan continued, "But you don’t need to worry about lacking subordinates. As Hong Sect Sect Leader, the Hong Sect’s First Hall is directly under you, and the funds of the Hong Sect’s Second Hall are also managed by you. You won’t be short on people or money."

Lin Feng nodded, listening carefully to Xu Yishan’s explanation.

Then Xu Yishan looked solemnly at Lin Feng and said in a deep voice, "Lin Feng, if you intend to vie for this position, I need to remind you of a few things. First, from this moment on, you must work hard to strengthen your own power—especially your endurance. You’ll have to rack up consecutive wins against many leaders to secure the Sect Leader seat!"

"Consecutive wins against many leaders?" Lin Feng asked, somewhat taken aback.

"To be precise, you have to compete with every leader..." Xu Yishan nodded. "It won’t necessarily be all hand‑to‑hand, but among the thirteen leader, as long as anyone wants to challenge you, you’ll have to accept."

Lin Feng froze for a moment. A revolving‑door battle against eleven Hong Sect leader, plus one Sect Leader—this really sounded like a tough job!
