Chapter 1671: Ransacking Every Drawer
Just then, Xu Ke suddenly remembered what the old Mr. Xu had said before.
He’d said, if it wasn’t in the current office, then it had to be in his previous office.
To be honest, Xu Ke knew absolutely nothing about that previous office.
Aside from that old building he’d gone to last time, he had no idea about any other place.
But according to what he found out afterward, that old building had only ever been used by a few company directors. A chairman like the old Mr. Xu wouldn’t even spare that shabby old building a glance.
That being the case, the problem suddenly got a lot bigger. So where exactly was the old Mr. Xu’s former office?
Xu Ke suddenly felt his scalp prickle; he had no idea where to even start.
And the old man had also said, if it wasn’t something important, don’t bother him again; otherwise, if he found out, there’d be no escaping a tongue-lashing.
For the moment, Xu Ke had no clue; he didn’t know how he was supposed to keep searching.
If he couldn’t find those few key documents, then he had no way to confirm these companies.
Thinking it over and over, in the end he could only go to his mother. After all, she’d been in the company for years; she definitely knew where his grandfather’s old office had been.
He had no idea what Wang Cuixia was doing right now; Xu Ke was afraid she might have gone out with his father, so he called to make sure.
When the call connected, it was obvious Wang Cuixia was in the middle of talking to someone.
After quite a while, only then did Wang Cuixia pick up.
"What is it now, son, something up again?"
"Mom, where are you? Why’s it so noisy around you?"
Xu Ke figured eight or nine out of ten that his mother had to be with his father. Even though she’d been complaining to him just now, her body was more honest than her mouth.
"Where else would I be? Isn’t it mealtime now? Your dad and I are out eating. This guy is seriously annoying—insisted on dragging me out. I told him I could just grab a couple of bites at the office, but he flat-out refused. You never should’ve brought him into the company in the first place, he does nothing but bug me all day. I don’t even know what I’m getting out of this."
Though Wang Cuixia was complaining like that, you could still hear how happy she was from her tone.
Xu Ke gave his own cleverness a little mental thumbs-up; he’d guessed right.
"So how much longer till you’re done? There’s something I want to ask you."
Xu Ke was already itching with impatience; he wanted to find those documents as soon as possible.
"About twenty minutes. You can go wait in my office for a bit, I’ll be right back." With that, Wang Cuixia hung up.
Right now, Xu Ke especially admired his parents. Don’t look at how they bicker all day long, always giving each other the side-eye, but at critical moments the two of them really are on the same side.
In fact, the two of them were just a pair of bickering lovebirds, tussling their way through a lifetime; by now, neither could live without the other.
He turned and left his office, heading to the Finance Department.
As soon as he reached Wang Cuixia’s area, he saw Xiao Ya there, busy handling documents.
Xu Ke froze for a second. Wasn’t this supposed to be break time? Why was Xiao Ya still here working overtime?
At the same time, he suddenly remembered what Wang Cuixia had told him last time—see if there was any suitable guy he could introduce to Xiao Ya.
Xu Ke had long since shoved that matter to the back of his mind; thinking of it now, he felt a bit awkward.
Xiao Ya also sensed someone come in, so she turned around.
When she saw it was Xu Ke, she instantly stood up, nervous.
"Hello, President Xu. I don’t know what brings you here."
Compared to the last time he’d seen her, Xiao Ya was doing much better, but she was still pretty nervous.
But Xu Ke could understand that; after all, she was just a young girl—he couldn’t expect too much from her.
"Relax, it’s fine, don’t be nervous. I’m just here to wait for my mom. By the way, isn’t it already mealtime? Why aren’t you downstairs eating?"
"I haven’t finished this document yet. It’s needed this afternoon, so I’m using the break to get it done. Once I’m finished, I’ll go eat." As she spoke, Xiao Ya hurriedly turned her gaze back to the computer.
For some reason, every time Xiao Ya saw Xu Ke, she would get inexplicably nervous.
She’d always felt extremely guilty about what she’d done in the past. Even though Wang Cuixia had told her it wasn’t her fault, she still felt terrible inside.
She always felt she owed Xu Ke’s family too much; no matter what she did, it seemed she could never pay it back.
Day in and day out, Xiao Ya carried that mindset; at this point she couldn’t even call this "working" anymore—it was "repaying kindness."
She felt that without Wang Cuixia, there would be no her as she was now.
Back then, she was just a fresh college graduate; getting into the company had been lucky enough, and being noticed by Wang Cuixia was like her stumbling into eight lifetimes’ worth of good fortune.
How she wished that incident back then had never happened; how she wished she’d never betrayed Wang Cuixia.
But she knew that no matter how she fantasized, none of it would change anything.
What happened had happened; what she owed was still owed.
Actually, Xiao Ya’s condition had been pretty good before, but every time she saw Xu Ke, she just felt she owed him far too much.
So every time she ran into him, she would get extremely nervous, and be in great pain.
Xu Ke noticed that Xiao Ya’s body was trembling slightly, which surprised him.
Logically speaking, no matter how nervous she was, it shouldn’t have gotten to this level of fear—but right now her state was like that of a traumatized creature.
Xu Ke was afraid she might get triggered by something and then he really wouldn’t know what she might do.
At the same time, Xu Ke was very puzzled as to why Xiao Ya had become like this.
According to his mother, Xiao Ya used to be a very cheerful girl.
Even if she was a bit shy, it shouldn’t have made her this nervous.
He felt there had to be some issue here, or some reason behind it.
Xu Ke realized this had to be resolved; otherwise, in her current state, it would be easy for something to go wrong.
But right now he had no idea what to do; seeing him made Xiao Ya this on edge.
He was afraid that if he said a few more words, she’d jump out the window on the spot.
After all, there was a window right beside her, and this was the eighteenth floor.
If she wanted to jump, Xu Ke definitely wouldn’t be able to stop her.
Realizing how things were, Xu Ke knew he couldn’t keep talking to her.
The only option was to wait for his mother to come back. She was the person Xiao Ya trusted most by her side right now; what she said, Xiao Ya should be willing to listen to.
