Chapter 1656: Humbly Seeking Guidance
In the following days, Xu Ke and Big Soldier were fully focused on building the new security department.
Meanwhile, Wang Huan and Zhao Lei were continuously learning from Big Soldier with an open mind.
As time passed bit by bit, their progress was very evident to me.
Even Big Soldier was surprised by their talent; it’s been many years since he’s seen people as talented as them.
As we all know, in any endeavor, talent is very important. Without talent, even if you put in a thousand times more effort than others, it might be hard to reach their level.
You have to admit that sometimes talent determines a person’s ceiling, and sometimes it decides what level a person can achieve in their career.
Wang Huan and Zhao Lei are also very eager to learn, and these days they’ve constantly been challenging themselves.
As soon as they learned the fundamentals, they couldn’t wait to put them into practice.
Big Soldier temporarily set up a server for them to keep attacking.
He wanted to see how long it would take for the two of them to breach this server.
When Big Soldier first started in the field, this was the method he used.
Back then, it took him half a day to breach the server. He was quite eager to see how long it would take Wang Huan and Zhao Lei now.
Although both had some experience in this area, this was still their first attempt, so they were both really nervous.
The servers they were working on weren’t the same, so each was busy with their own tasks.
Starting the initial attempt, Wang Huan first used code to create a fake program, and then he embedded this program into the server’s interior.
He thought this might fool the server and enable him to infiltrate it from the inside.
However, Wang Huan overestimated his skills. The code he wrote was full of mistakes and was identified and intercepted by the server in less than two minutes.
Seeing the code he’d painstakingly written for half an hour get wiped out like this, Wang Huan was near tears.
Still, he didn’t get discouraged but turned to write a new piece of code.
He learned from his previous failure and carefully reviewed the code twice this time.
Once everything was ready, he inserted this new code into the server.
This time it went smoothly; the server didn’t detect any anomalies in the code.
Thrilled by the success, Wang Huan thought he had succeeded and went to find Big Soldier brimming with joy.
"Master, I did it! I successfully inserted the code I wrote into the server."
Big Soldier was busy contacting team members at the time, and he was shocked to hear Wang Huan’s words.
Keep in mind, it had only been two hours since he issued the task, and Wang Huan had already breached the server within this time frame, something Big Soldier found impossible.
Although he had set the server to be particularly simple, it was indeed quite challenging for a beginner.
Just the underlying architecture was beyond the understanding of most people.
"Are you sure you’ve breached the server?" Big Soldier was still a bit incredulous.
"Master, of course! If you don’t believe me, come and see for yourself."
Saying this, Wang Huan led Big Soldier over to his computer.
Big Soldier was a bit baffled by the scene on the computer; the server was perfectly intact and in working condition. Yet Wang Huan claimed he had successfully breached it.
"Wang Huan, the server is fine right here. Do you have anything you’d like to say?" Big Soldier pointed at the screen as he spoke.
Looking at the screen, Wang Huan was also in disbelief.
He clearly remembered inserting the code, and logically, the server should have collapsed from within, but now the server was in perfect condition and had even upgraded again.
"How is this possible? I clearly put the code in. Logically, the server should crash; how could it upgrade instead?"
From Wang Huan’s words, Big Soldier had a rough idea.
This girl might have simply underestimated the server he had set up.
If a single piece of code could breach the server, he wouldn’t have spent half a day on it back then.
The server he had configured wasn’t that simple; even if the code successfully breached it, the antivirus patch would soon detect it.
Once it detected an intrusion, the system would immediately react and further strengthen itself with upgrades.
Moreover, with each upgrade, the difficulty of intrusion would be higher than before.
"You did indeed insert the code, but take a look at how the server reacts after you put it in."
Following Big Soldier’s advice, Wang Huan tried inserting the code once more.
Even though the code was successfully penetrated into the interior again, soon after, the system upgraded again, and his code was completely ineffective.
At this point, Wang Hang finally realized why he had failed earlier. It turned out that this system could react and upgrade itself.
He also realized that he had oversimplified the problem, as if it were truly easy, Big Soldier wouldn’t have involved them.
Since this method didn’t work, Wang Huan decided to employ another method.
Seeing Wang Huan finally understand, Big Soldier nodded approvingly.
This kind of insight means he’ll avoid many detours while accomplishing tasks.
Meanwhile, Zhao Lei was vigorously engaged in cracking away.
Instead of using the same method as Wang Huan, he planned to use other tools to first back up the entire server.
However, the server’s memory was so large that halfway through the backup it became apparent this method wasn’t feasible.
With conventional methods failing, Zhao Lei had no choice but to take a more unconventional path.
Prior, Big Soldier had taught them a method that exploits vulnerabilities in the server itself to cause an internal collapse.
But finding these vulnerabilities in the server was quite difficult, and could only be done bit by bit manually.
Since Zhao Lei didn’t have any other good methods, he could only slowly proceed with this laborious technique.
I have to say, this server is huge; no wonder it took him half a day and he hadn’t even backed up half of it.
After an hour, Zhao Lei found he hadn’t even inspected 1/10 of the server.
At this rate, he’d likely spend the entire day tethered to the server, but even so, Zhao Lei had no other choice.
