Chapter 116: Check Without Mate
Xie Rong stopped where he stood. His gaze lingered on Wang Gege for a long moment before he finally asked, "Furen."
His voice remained as composed as ever. "You saw me talking?"
"I did." Wang Gege answered honestly. Although her voice remained weak, curiosity was evident in her eyes. "You were speaking to someone... Who was it?"
Instead of answering, Xie Rong walked to the bedside.
He gently placed the back of his hand against her forehead, checking her temperature himself. His hand lingered for another moment before he slowly withdrew it.
"Gui Lin." He called.
As though he had been waiting outside for orders, Gui Lin stepped into the chamber almost immediately. "Young Master."
"Bring the physician back." He ordered instantly.
Gui Lin looked at Wang Gege, who had only just regained consciousness, before returning his gaze to Xie Rong.
"At once." Xie Rong finished his words when he saw the confusion in Gui Lin’s eyes.
Without asking another question, he cupped his fists respectfully and turned to leave.
Only after Gui Lin disappeared beyond the doorway did Wang Gege frown.
"What do you mean?" She looked genuinely puzzled. "Why are you calling the physician back? I am all right. "Wang Gege frowned weakly.
Xie Rong looked back at her calmly.
"You nearly drowned." His tone was steady, without the slightest hint of ridicule. "You remained unconscious for several hours."
He paused briefly before continuing, "It would not be unusual if your mind is still affected by the shock."
Wang Gege’s eyes widened. "My mind?"
"You said you saw me speaking to someone." Xie Rong’s expression remained composed. "But from the moment the physician left until you opened your eyes... There was only me in this room."
Wang Gege stared at him blankly.
"No." She shook her head. "I clearly saw you talking. You even paused as though someone was replying to you. You were talking to someone."
Xie Rong met her gaze without wavering.
"I was not." His answer came without the slightest hesitation. "Furen must have mistaken what you saw."
Wang Gege immediately frowned. "I didn’t!"
Her voice was still weak, but there was obvious dissatisfaction in it.
"I know what I saw." She pointed toward the place where he had been standing earlier. "You were standing right there, talking all by yourself."
Before Xie Rong could respond, hurried footsteps sounded outside the chamber.
"Young Master." Gui Lin’s voice came from beyond the door. "The physician has arrived."
Moments later, the physician hurried into the chamber, carrying his medicine box. Upon seeing Wang Gege awake, relief immediately appeared on his aged face.
"Young Madam." He quickly bowed before approaching the bedside. "It is fortunate that you have awakened."
Xie Rong rose to his feet, allowing the physician to examine her. "Please have another look."
The physician nodded. "Of course."
He sat beside the bed and gently placed two fingers upon Wang Gege’s wrist.
The room gradually fell silent.
Even Gui Lin remained standing quietly by the doorway, waiting for the physician’s conclusion.
After several moments, the physician slowly withdrew his hand.
"How is she?" Xie Rong asked.
The physician smiled faintly. "Young Madam’s pulse is much steadier than before."
He looked toward Wang Gege, "Does Young Madam feel dizzy? Any headache? Blurred vision? Ringing in the ears?"
Wang Gege shook her head one after another. "No."
"The chest?" The physician continued with his question.
Wang Gege blinked, "It no longer hurts."
"The breathing?"
"Much better."
The physician nodded in satisfaction. "Very good."
He turned back toward Xie Rong, "Young Madam has recovered well. Aside from needing more rest over the next few days, there appears to be nothing abnormal."
Xie Rong remained silent for a few moments before he spoke again. "What about her state of mind?"
The physician looked puzzled. "Her state of mind? Could the incident have affected it?"
Only then did the physician understand why he had been summoned back so urgently.
He looked at Wang Gege again before asking gently, "Young Madam, do you know who you are?"
She answered without hesitation. "I am Wa—Shen Taotao."
Realizing her slip of the tongue, she immediately corrected herself.
The physician merely smiled, assuming she had momentarily misspoken after just regaining consciousness.
"And do you know who he is?" The physician gestured toward Xie Rong.
"My husband." Wang Gege answered without hesitation, though her brows gradually knitted together in confusion.
The physician continued, "Do you know what day it is today?"
"I don’t." She answered honestly. "I’ve been unconscious for several hours, according to my husband. So... I suppose it’s still the same day?"
The physician let out a soft chuckle. "That is a reasonable answer."
He turned back to Xie Rong and cupped his fists respectfully. "Young Master, there is no cause for concern. Young Madam’s consciousness is clear, and her responses are coherent. I see no signs that the near-drowning has affected her mind."
"Young Master, there is no cause for concern. Young Madam’s consciousness is clear, and her responses are coherent. I see no signs that the near-drowning has affected her mind."
"I understand." Xie Rong inclined his head slightly. "Thank you."
The physician smiled. "Young Madam’s condition has stabilized considerably. However, she should avoid overexerting herself for the next few days. It would also be best if she consumed light meals and plenty of warm water."
"I will remember that."
The physician nodded in satisfaction before closing his medicine box. Since there were no further instructions, he remained standing quietly, waiting to see whether the Young Master had any other questions.
Now Wang Gege, who had been listening the whole time, looked from the physician to Xie Rong.
Then she frowned. "Husband."
"Mm?" Xie Rong arched his eyebrows slightly.
She pursed her lips. "The physician just said my consciousness is clear."
Xie Rong nodded lightly. "He did."
"So..." Wang Gege tilted her head. "Who were you talking to just now?"
The physician, who had been preparing to take his leave, paused. His gaze moved between the husband and wife before he gave a dry cough.
"Since Young Madam has regained consciousness and there is nothing further to worry about, this old one shall take his leave."
Xie Rong gave a slight nod. "Gui Lin."
"Yes, Young Master." Gui Lin immediately stepped forward and escorted the physician out of the chamber.
The wooden door closed softly behind them.
Once again, only the two of them remained inside. Wang Gege’s eyes never left Xie Rong.
"Husband... You still haven’t answered me."
