Shen Yanzhi grit his teeth through the pain. "It’s nothing."

Just then, her phone rang. It was Liu Qian.

She shot Shen Yanzhi a glare before answering the phone. "Qianqian, what’s wrong?"

"Sister Jiang, do you remember Feng Yuan?"

Jiang Li frowned. "Feng Yuan? Who’s that?"

’Do I even know him?’

Liu Qian was quick to explain. "You know, the guy from our class reunion who was bragging about how much money he’d made."

The name did ring a bell, though she couldn’t recall his face. "Oh. What about him?"

"Well, a bunch of our classmates gave him money to invest for them. Turns out it was all a scam to get their money."

Jiang Li wasn’t surprised in the least. She had warned them, but no one listened. ’Serves them right for getting scammed.’

But Liu Qian wouldn’t be calling her for no reason about someone she’d all but forgotten. "So, how does this involve me?"

Liu Qian cleared her throat. "Well, you were hiring a few assistants at the reunion, right? Now they all want to come work for our company."

Jiang Li rejected the idea without a second thought. "I don’t want them."

’Does she think my company is a recycling center for trash?’

"Okay, I get it."

In truth, Liu Qian knew Jiang Li would probably refuse, but she was cornered by the group and had no choice but to make the call.

After hanging up, Liu Qian turned to them with a helpless expression. "You heard her. Sister Jiang said no. You’ll have to look for opportunities elsewhere."

"We’re all classmates. What’s the big deal with her lending a hand?"

"Exactly! She hired a bunch of people on the spot back then. What’s a few more of us? Is she worried she can’t afford it?"

Liu Qian rolled her eyes. "Are you even listening to yourselves?"

She continued indignantly, "Sister Jiang warned you all back then, but you insisted on investing with Feng Yuan. Now that you’ve been scammed, you’re not going after him; you’re coming after her. Do you think Sister Jiang is a pushover? Or that her company is a homeless shelter that takes in anyone?"

Normally, Liu Qian’s words might have been enough to dissuade them.

But now, having lost their life savings to Feng Yuan’s scam, they were furious at Jiang Li’s refusal to help them in their time of need.

They didn’t bother arguing with Liu Qian. Instead, they went straight to Weibo to expose Jiang Li.

’She wants to run a company? Fine. We’ll teach her just how vicious the world can be.’

Jiang Li, however, was oblivious to all of this. After hanging up, she simply went upstairs to sleep.

Worried about disturbing her rest, Shen Yanzhi thoughtfully set her phone to silent.

As a result, when Jiang Li woke up, she had over a hundred missed calls.

Many were from Liu Qian, with the rest scattered among various other people.

She immediately called Liu Qian back. "Qianqian, what happened?"

"Sister Jiang, I’m so sorry. I messed up."

Jiang Li was baffled, completely unsure why Liu Qian was apologizing.

Jiang Li sat up straight. "What exactly happened? Why are you apologizing?"

Shen Yanzhi, who had been listening for any sound of her waking, came in from the balcony. Seeing Jiang Li on the phone, he went to pour her a glass of warm water.

Deciding she might as well rip the band-aid off, Liu Qian said in a trembling voice, "Remember how you refused to let them join the company? Well, they turned around and made you a trending topic. Now the entire internet is dragging you through the mud."

Jiang Li took a sip of water and said dismissively, "Pfft, is that all? I thought it was something serious. Let them curse me. It’s not like I’ll lose a pound of flesh over it."

Knowing Liu Qian must have been worried sick all morning, she tried to comfort her. "Don’t panic. If the sky falls, the tall people will hold it up. I’ve got this."

Liu Qian bit her lip. "But..."

Before Liu Qian could finish, Jiang Li cut her off. "No ’buts.’ You’ve been working yourself to the bone lately. Take the next three days off. Go home, relax, and don’t be so wound up."

Liu Qian was on the verge of tears. "Sister Jiang, you’re not... you’re not firing me, are you?"

"I promise. I’m telling you to rest, not firing you."

She had barely finished speaking when she added, "Of course, if you don’t want to rest, I’ll pay you triple for these three days."

Liu Qian’s eyes widened in shock. ’I caused such a huge disaster, but not only is Jiang Li not blaming me, she’s giving me time off? Am I dreaming?’

After three seconds of silence, Jiang Li came to a decision. "You’re not saying anything, so I’ll take that as a yes."

The moment Jiang Li finished speaking, a system notification chimed from the phone. "Alipay transfer received: 10,000 yuan."
