Chapter 98 - 44: Trillion Dragon and Phoenix Bracelet, Gu Mingyuan
Just as she broke free from the crowd and was about to leave, someone blocked her path. "I apologize for interrupting."
Jiang Li looked up, meeting the man’s deep, bottomless black eyes.
He wore a well-tailored suit, his hair was meticulously styled, and he had sharp brows and piercing eyes. With a pair of gold-rimmed glasses perched on his face, he was the very image of a businessman—a completely different style from Shen Yanzhi.
’If Shen Yanzhi was the aloof, untouchable type, then the man before her was likely the dark and unhinged sort.’
Jiang Li nodded. "It is quite an interruption."
The man extended his hand. "Gu Mingyuan."
Jiang Li frowned. The name sounded familiar, but she couldn’t quite place it.
Noticing that the crowd kept its distance, Jiang Li figured this Gu Mingyuan must have some clout. She moved to the side, leaned against the wall, and crossed her arms. "So, what do you want with me?" she asked warily.
Gu Mingyuan glanced at the buzzing flies around them, who were too afraid to get any closer. "Shall we find somewhere else to talk?"
Jiang Li nodded. "Alright."
She turned and called to Xie Wan. "Xiao Xie, we’re leaving."
Xie Wan scurried over. When she got a clear look at Gu Mingyuan’s face, she gulped and whispered, "Miss Jiang, how do you know the CEO of Mingyuan Group?"
’Mingyuan Group?’
’Ah, so that’s why his name sounded so familiar.’
She’d heard it from Zhong Mufeng.
The TV station had once assigned Zhong Mufeng to interview Gu Mingyuan, but he’d refused. She had complained about it to Jiang Li several times.
Jiang Li shook her head. "I don’t. He’s the one who approached me."
Xie Wan nodded knowingly and leaned in to whisper to Jiang Li, "A friend of mine told me that Mingyuan Group is going through some internal conflict right now. He’s probably looking for you to talk about a partnership."
Jiang Li shrugged. "I don’t know the first thing about his business. What kind of partnership could he want with me?"
Xie Wan said with a wry smile, "By ’partnership,’ he means investment. He wants you to give him money."
Jiang Li glanced at Gu Mingyuan’s back as he walked ahead of them, then immediately pulled her phone out of her pocket and sent a message to Zhong Mufeng.
A second later, a video call from Zhong Mufeng came through.
Thankfully, she had brought her Bluetooth earbuds. She quickly pulled them out of her bag and put them on.
The moment she answered, Zhong Mufeng’s loud voice came through. "How do you know Gu Mingyuan?"
Jiang Li aimed the camera at Gu Mingyuan’s back. "It’s a long story, but he wants to talk to me about something right now."
Zhong Mufeng clicked her tongue. "He’s probably after your money."
Then she added with a cold snort, "Don’t you dare just hand it over."
"Relax," Jiang Li said, patting her chest. "I’m not going to just hand it over."
"Quick, move the camera. I don’t want to see him."
Jiang Li immediately switched to the front-facing camera. When Zhong Mufeng saw Jiang Li’s suit, she asked suspiciously, "Where are you? And why are you in a suit?"
"Tianyuan Hotel. I just attended a charity auction."
Zhong Mufeng’s tone was knowing. "Oh, the one held by Kyoto Bank and Fengdu Bank?"
Jiang Li nodded. "That’s the one."
Zhong Mufeng looked curious. "How was it? Did you win anything good?"
Of course, she knew about this auction. It was held twice a year, once in the first half of the year and once in the second. All proceeds were donated to the Kyoto Red Cross Society.
Before Jiang Li could answer, Zhong Mufeng held up a hand. "Actually, never mind, don’t tell me. I’ll just check the official website later."
She wanted it to be a surprise.
As Gu Mingyuan came to a stop in front of the elevators, Jiang Li paused as well. She cleared her throat. "Alright, I’ll call you back when I’m home."
"Okay," Zhong Mufeng said. "Take care of yourself, and don’t let that skinflint scam you."
"Don’t worry!"
’As if Gu Mingyuan had it in him.’
Once they were in the elevator, Gu Mingyuan pressed the button for a floor. "I overheard you saying you were hungry. Should we find a restaurant first?"
Jiang Li raised an eyebrow. "I’ll pick the place, then."
’She was curious if a skinflint like Gu Mingyuan would be willing to eat at a hole-in-the-wall joint.’
Gu Mingyuan was taken aback for a moment, then nodded. "No problem."
He was the one asking for a favor, so of course, he had to defer to her.
When they reached the first floor, while Xie Wan went to get the car, Jiang Li asked, "Are you riding with me or driving yourself?"
