Chapter 7: The New Recording
The sound of her retreating footsteps faded down the stone corridor just as the noon bells began to chime across campus.
Cadets rushed toward the grand courtyard where the official Ranking Battle brackets were being mounted.
Magic papers appeared all over the academy at the same time. Students crowded around the boards.
Voices rose.
Some people cheered.
Some went quiet.
Leo pushed through the crowd and found his name.
Second-year Rankings – First Round His match was set for the third day. Against a mid-rank student from a minor viscount house.
Safe on paper.
Nothing special.
Then Leo saw the other names.
Caelum Voss was placed in a high bracket. His first match was against a strong third-year transfer known for aggressive sword work.
People already called it one of the matches worth watching.
Elara Snowveil was high as well. Her first match was scheduled for opening day.
Against another Rank 1 candidate from a different year group.
A real test under the eyes of the whole continent. The Grand Coliseum would be full.
Magic mirrors would send the important fights across the empire.
Noble families would watch.
Military officers too.
The pressure in the air became real. Leo was leaving the main hall when Caelum found him.
He did not greet him.
He just walked beside him until they reached a quieter corridor near the west training fields.
"She gave me the crystal this morning," he said.
His voice was tight.
"I watched it twice already."
He kept his eyes forward.
"And?"
"She was different."
Caelum’s hand gripped the hilt of his practice sword too hard. "In the first recording she still fought it. In this one her body moved with you."
"She held you tighter."
"When she came she looked like she forgot I existed for a moment."
He stopped walking.
Leo stopped too.
Caelum’s gray eyes were darker than Leo had ever seen them in public.
"I told myself I would wait until after the Ranking Battles," he said. "But every time I close my eyes I see it again. The way her legs locked around you."
The sound she made when you filled her.
She looked at the crystal the whole time, just like Leo asked.
"And still... for a moment it felt like I was not even in the room."
His voice dropped lower. "I need more, Leo."
"Soon."
"She said it was the last time."
"I know what she said."
Caelum’s jaw tightened. "I also know what I saw. She is changing."
"And I am the one who pushed her there."
"If I wait too long, that change will keep growing without me."
A group of students walked past. Caelum immediately put his perfect public face back on.
He even nodded politely at them.
The moment they were gone, the hunger returned to his eyes.
"After her first match," he said.
"I will speak with her again. Softly."
The way that always works.
"Be ready."
Then he walked away toward the training fields. His steps were controlled.
His back was straight.
But the tension in his shoulders was clear if you knew where to look.
The perfect future Supreme Commander was starting to crack under the weight of his own request. That afternoon the training fields were packed.
He stayed on the edge and practiced basic forms.
His mana felt denser than last week. When he swung the wooden sword, the movement came a little cleaner than before.
Recovery between sets was faster.
He still held back.
No one needed to notice. Across the field, Elara was practicing ice-element control with two other high-rank girls.
She created sharp ice spears and launched them at moving targets.
Her control was still excellent. Rank 1 for a reason.
But once, when a spear shattered against a target, she stood still for too long.
Her golden eyes stared at the broken ice without moving. One of the girls called her name twice before she reacted.
She forced a small smile and continued.
A few minutes later another spear left her hand half a second late. It still hit the target, but the timing was off.
The other girls did not comment.
They were used to Rank 1 being perfect. Only someone watching closely would notice the small delays.
Later, when their practice ended, she walked past the area where Leo was training.
She did not look at him. But when she was a few steps away, her fingers curled tightly into a fist at her side, then slowly opened again.
Small cracks.
Visible if you were watching closely.
He kept swinging the wooden sword. The denser flow of mana answered every movement.
It was no longer faint.
It sat in his pathways like it belonged there now. After only three nights the change was already this clear.
The dual cultivation law was operating with absolute precision: the deeper he claimed her, the more Frost Bloodline essence his Black Sun core devoured.
After filling her.
After the crystals recorded everything. If it kept growing, hiding it during Ranking week would get harder.
And Ranking week was only six days away.
Evening came fast.
The academy did not quiet down. Students kept training under magic lights.
Instructors shouted corrections.
The Grand Coliseum loomed in the distance, dark and waiting.
Leo returned to his room. Leo sat on the bed and focused on the warmth inside his 3rd Ascension Black Sun meridians.
It was stronger after the third night.
Not dramatic.
Not yet.
But it was no longer easy to ignore. Something in his body was changing because of her, and Leo tracked every percentage of his rising mana density with cold satisfaction.
Outside, the lights of the female dormitory glowed.
Somewhere in that building, Elara was carrying the weight of three nights and two recordings. Somewhere else, Caelum was probably watching the third recording again, feeding the hunger he could no longer fully control.
The Ranking Battles would start in six days.
Elara would fight on the opening day under the eyes of the entire continent. Caelum would fight soon after.
And after those matches, the next request would come.
He lay back and stared at the ceiling. Every move on the academy board would serve his own foundation.
Now the academy itself was starting to tighten around them.
Six days until Elara stepped onto the sand under the eyes of the entire continent. Six days until Caelum’s next demand.
Six days until the space between all of them got even smaller.
Leo closed his eyes.
Caelum pressed his palm against the glowing projection of Elara crying out in Leo’s bed, his breathing ragged in the dark. "More... I need to see her break completely."
