Chapter 381: Hold My Child While I Unfuck Your Strategy
The castle was in defense mode.
Every entrance was sealed. Heavy oak doors, reinforced with iron, barred from the inside. Archers lined the upper walls, their positions staggered for overlapping fields of fire. The courtyard was empty of civilians, the non-combatants moved to the interior shelters that had been designed three generations ago for exactly this scenario.
They passed through the main gate. The doors sealed behind them with a sound that carried the finality of a castle deciding that everything outside its walls was the enemy’s problem.
Captain Aldren was waiting inside.
"Alpha." His voice was clipped, urgent, carrying intelligence that had a timestamp on it. "Viremont has opened portals outside our ward perimeter. Wolves are in pursuit. They are moving in a northern arc, probing the perimeter for weaknesses."
"How much time?" Garrett asked. He was still between Cross and Agnes. He was still bleeding. His voice carried zero evidence of either.
"Twenty minutes. Maybe less. The portal signatures are mage-origin, which means they are anchored to pre-established waypoints. The probing pattern suggests they are looking for a gap rather than forcing one."
Garrett’s mind was already moving. Agnes could feel it through the matebond, the shift from pain to calculation, the particular gear-change that happened when Garrett Darkhowler stopped being a man who had just been shot and started being a commander defending his home.
"Pull the northern patrol back to the inner wall. Consolidate our archers on the eastern and northern battlements, those are the two approaches with the shortest distance from the ward perimeter to the castle. Station the reserve unit at the main gate with silver-tipped weapons. If they breach the outer wall, I want a kill zone between the gate and the courtyard."
"And get me a message to Drakenfell," Garrett continued. "Tiberon needs to know Viremont is coordinating with Orosia. Full intelligence package. Portal method, force composition, the cascading invasion strategy. Everything Agnes has reported. Send it now."
Agnes listened. Good instincts. Wrong positioning. She kept her mouth shut for exactly four more seconds.
"Garrett."
Her voice cut through the orders. Everyone in the corridor looked at her.
She was still under Garrett’s arm. Still carrying Andrew. Still bleeding from a lip that had been split by her father’s hand four hours ago. She had never interrupted Garrett during operational command. She had attended briefings silently, observed strategy sessions without comment, maintained the careful boundary between mate and officer that court training had drilled into her before she could walk.
First time for everything. Tonight was a night of firsts. First time escaping a compound. First time riding a wolf. First time interrupting a king. Agnes was on a streak, and the streak was not stopping for decorum.
She was breaking the boundary because the boundary was going to get people killed.
"My father started using Fae portals, which operate under different laws than mage. Mage portals require a ley line or anchor point that the caster has physically visited. Fae portals run on different rules. They can open anywhere, regardless of whether the caster has been there."
She paused. The room was listening.
"Those portals outside your ward perimeter are a decoy. They are mage-origin because he wants you to respond to mage-origin threats with mage countermeasures. He wants your men focused on the northern arc. The real entry will be Fae, and it will come from a direction you haven’t fortified, because Fae portals can open in places your patrol has never flagged as vulnerable. Are your wards accounting for Fae as well?"
"Yes," Cross answered, his voice tight. "Our ward perimeter accounts for Fae portals, but the coverage is thinner. Those wards end within a ten-mile radius of the castle. Beyond that, we have detection but limited interdiction."
"He will place the insertion point a mile or so behind your ward perimeter, in case you have already figured out he has Fae capability," Agnes continued. "Knowing my father, he will choose the least likely position. Low ground. A cave. A ravine. Somewhere your scouts dismiss as tactically irrelevant because the terrain makes conventional assault impossible." She looked at Cross. "Viremont also uses enchanted arrows tipped with accelerant. The arrowheads ignite on impact. If he gets archers within range of your walls, the fire starts before the assault does."
Cross looked at Garrett. Garrett looked at Cross. The look between them lasted two seconds and carried a complete tactical reassessment.
"Aldren." Garrett’s voice was ice. "Redeploy. Northern wall holds current position but reduces to a screening force. Pull sixty percent of the reserve to the southern and western approaches. I want scout pairs in every ravine, cave, and low-ground position within fifteen miles of the castle. If a Fae portal opens, I want to know about it before the first boot touches dirt."
"Yes, Alpha."
"Cross, get our mages on our ward and ley line intersections. Every point where a ley line crosses our territory within twenty miles. The second a Fae portal signature appears, they collapse it."
"On it."
"I would station them in pairs," Agnes added. "One mage to detect, one to collapse. A single mage handling both functions will lose a half second on the transition, and a half second is enough for a team to clear the aperture."
Cross looked at Agnes. The look carried the particular reassessment of a Beta who had spent months watching this woman operate inside his castle and was only now understanding the full scope of what had been operating.
"Pairs," Cross confirmed. "I will double the mage deployment."
"Firebreaks," Agnes cut in. "Clear a fifty-yard perimeter around every external structure within arrow range of the walls. Anything that burns, move it or soak it. His fire arrows need fuel, and if the fuel is removed, the arrows are just arrows."
Reginald Viremont had taught her too well. He never considered the possibility that his daughter was taking notes.
"Aldren." Garrett’s voice was quiet. "The order came from both of us. Move."
Aldren looked at Agnes. Then at Garrett. Then at Agnes again.
He saluted and ran.
Garrett looked down at the woman under his arm and felt something rearrange in his chest. Pride. Not the soft kind. The kind that burned.
