Chapter 68: All-out Breakout
The physical attacks of a low-level Spiritual System zombie weren’t very strong.
Seeing Luna Dawson charge over, the zombie swiped at her with its sharp claws.
"Come on, you ugly thing!"
Luna Dawson cursed, charging straight at the zombie. The moment it lunged with its claws raised, her gaze sharpened, and she swung her blade.
"SHRIIIP!"
Black blood splattered her pant leg. The zombie’s claws fell to the ground, still twitching.
Luna Dawson didn’t stop. A roundhouse kick sent the zombie flying into a wall. She rushed forward and brutally plunged her bayonet into the top of its skull.
"SQUELCH!"
Dark red blood sprayed all over her face. The zombie froze for two seconds before slumping to the ground.
The next second, the horde downstairs erupted into chaos. Without the Spiritual System zombie controlling them, they became like headless chickens—wandering aimlessly, roaring randomly, and crazily ramming into the military truck.
Luna Dawson leaped onto the roof, grabbed her submachine gun, and opened fire. "RAT-TAT-TAT!" A wave of zombies below fell.
Seeing that reinforcements had arrived, the old woman who had pushed someone else breathed a sigh of relief and shrank back into a corner of the truck’s cabin, not daring to make a sound.
Luna Dawson glanced at her from the rooftop, her eyes cold. ’Her death would be no great loss.’
"BANG!"
With a single, precise shot, the old woman was taken out.
If the officials wouldn’t clean up the trash, she would.
That gunshot sent the other survivors around her into a panic, and they looked around frantically.
When their eyes met Luna Dawson on the roof, holding her gun, they all cowered together, covering their heads and not even daring to breathe too loudly.
At this point, having lost the control of the Spiritual System zombie, the horde’s offensive rhythm had clearly slowed down.
This sight greatly boosted everyone’s morale, but the number of zombies was still immense.
Lynn Shelby seized the opportunity to activate her Ice Ability, erecting a small ice wall to block the remaining zombies.
Kevin Keane followed up, activating his superpower. A Thunder Snake pierced through the zombies in front of him, leaving their heads scorched black as they fell stiffly to the ground.
"Major Coleman!"
Aaron Palmer’s voice cut through the zombies’ roars.
As he raised his hand, a blazing fire snake erupted forth, forcing back the horde lunging at him.
He shouted at the same time, "You guys take the survivors and go first! Our squad will cover the rear! We’ll meet up at the safe zone later!"
Ethan Coleman saw that it was Aaron Palmer who had shouted, and his expression suddenly sharpened.
His tone was grave and urgent. "There are only a few of you, and there are still mutated zombies roaming around! How can you hold out? It’s too dangerous to stay behind!"
"Don’t worry! We’ve taken on more zombies than this before. We can handle a scene like this!"
Aaron Palmer sidestepped a lunging zombie’s bite and killed it with a backhanded stab of his knife. He urged them on, "If you drag this out any longer, you’ll run out of ammo, and your casualties will only increase! Stop hesitating!"
Aaron Palmer’s words were like a clap of thunder, jolting Ethan Coleman to his senses.
Right now, the squad was running low on ammunition, and the survivors were slowing down their mobility. Wasting time here wouldn’t help; it would just make them a burden.
The scent of the living and the continuous gunfire would only attract more zombies, leading to pointless casualties.
"Alright!"
Ethan Coleman grit his teeth, no longer hesitating. He issued another loud command, "All units! Concentrate your remaining firepower, tear open a breach ahead, and break out with everything you’ve got!"
He turned to Aaron Palmer, his eyes filled with solemn gratitude. "Good kid, thank you! I, Ethan Coleman, will remember this debt!"
The soldiers responded immediately, concentrating their remaining firepower in a fierce assault on the edge of the horde.
Under the cover of Luna Dawson and her team’s insane firepower, the soldiers’ dense gunfire echoed across the battlefield. They forcefully tore a gap in the surging horde and broke out of the encirclement with all their might.
Standing on the roof, Luna Dawson watched the military truck break out of the encirclement, using her submachine gun to pick off the zombies chasing them.
But there were simply too many zombies. As one wave fell, another surged forward relentlessly. Gunfire alone couldn’t stop them completely.
Luna Dawson made a snap decision. She raised her hand, and a thought flashed through her mind.
In an instant, dozens of abandoned cars fell from the sky. The sound of countless metal impacts echoed one after another.
The vehicles crashed down, crushing and piling on top of each other, forming an airtight metal barrier on the road behind the departing military truck, completely blocking the zombies’ path of pursuit.
The zombies slammed into the barrier of wrecked cars with dull roars, unable to advance another step.
Her gaze swept over the military truck driving off into the distance, and the corner of her mouth curled up. ’It’s great that you’re gone. Now I can finally have some fun with the remaining zombies.’
Standing on the edge of the roof, Luna Dawson was bathed in the midday sun, which outlined her entire body in a clear, bright halo.
The turbulent air from the heavy impacts rushed upwards, whipping up the loose strands of hair at her temples.
She was looking down from on high, killing the zombies below, her entire being radiating an excited and bloodthirsty aura.
In the military truck driving away, the soldiers all witnessed this scene on the rooftop.
The figure wreathed in a halo of light, the casual way she reaped the zombies.
And that bizarre ability to control countless vehicles—it left everyone with a look of shock. The image was like a deep brand, seared firmly into their memories.
"Everyone, get to the rooftops! I’m going to surround these zombies."
Luna Dawson’s voice, filled with excitement, came through their communication headsets.
"Roger!"
The others replied, and with a few leaps, they each climbed onto the nearest tall building.
Following that, Luna Dawson filled the spaces between several buildings with countless abandoned vehicles. Her nimble figure moved continuously across the makeshift roads of cars, darting between the buildings.
After distributing incendiary bombs and grenades to the others, Luna Dawson proceeded to toss several barrels of gasoline and diesel fuel into the densest parts of the horde below, ultimately trapping nearly two thousand zombies.
The team members each held a position. Seeing that everything was ready, Luna Dawson spoke: "Alright, three grenades each! Bomb the densest parts of the horde!"
The moment she finished speaking, several massive explosions echoed into the distance.
"BOOM!"
"BOOM! BOOM!!"
Luna Dawson and the others stood on the rooftops, watching the explosions and flames that soared into the sky before them, a feeling of deep satisfaction welling up from within.
Explosions are an art form.
Everyone couldn’t help but think, ’This boss of ours is completely insane!’
’But damn, killing zombies is satisfying!’
’Holy shit!’
’HOLY SHIT!’
’Is this what it feels like to wipe out thousands of zombies at once?!’
Aaron Palmer screamed internally.
Fueled by the exploding cars, the nearly two thousand zombie corpses burned ever more fiercely and completely.
Orange-red tongues of fire licked madly at the air, the high temperature distorting the surrounding airflow into blurry ripples.
A heatwave washed over them, carrying a searing temperature that made the group on the rooftops take several steps back, instinctively raising their hands to shield their faces.
The team members looked at each other from across the buildings. Although they were all wearing masks and goggles, hiding their expressions...
...the slight tension and yet relaxed line of their shoulders, and the shining eyes faintly visible through their goggles, all silently spoke of their inner excitement. They all knew that the others were smiling wildly.
Ethan Coleman stood steadily in the bumpy cabin of the military truck, the cold wind whipping dust into his face.
He paid it no mind, merely narrowing his eyes to gaze back at the plume of black smoke billowing on the distant horizon.
The wind seemed to carry the lingering smell of gunpowder. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he muttered under his breath, "That brat... his skills are as big as his temper!"
Kelvin Miller, who had been saved by Kevin Keane, clutched the wound on his shoulder, leaning against the side of the truck and gasping for breath.
Hearing the major’s words, he couldn’t help but lean over and ask, "Major, that Brother Palmer’s skills are so sharp, and his superpower is so incredible. Our troops are in need of people right now, why didn’t we recruit him?"
