Chapter 71: Kicking an Iron Plate
This was the future site of the Kensington Base, after all.
The Military Command had been running rescue missions for a while now; he was sure these people wouldn’t dare go too far.
He lifted his chin high, his face a mask of arrogance. "You were in the wrong first. My actions weren’t entirely right either, so let’s call it even..."
Before he could finish, a sharp "BANG!" echoed.
A bloody hole suddenly appeared between Quentin Sawyer’s eyebrows. Blood and bone fragments SPLATTERED onto the roll-up door behind him, conveniently covering the charred Fireball marks.
The arrogant expression hadn’t even faded from his face as his body went limp, collapsing stiffly into the snow, completely still.
Logan Sawyer’s group, standing closest, fell silent in an instant, utterly stunned by the sudden turn of events.
No one had expected Quentin Sawyer to die just like that.
Their ears were ringing. The gunshot echoed in their minds like a curse, replaying over and over.
Miles Dawson turned his head and saw Luna Dawson putting away her pistol with clean, efficient movements.
"Sis! You finished packing up?"
Luna Dawson grunted in acknowledgment and nodded. Her gaze swept over the corpse on the ground as she said, "Now, we’re even."
Logan Sawyer stared intently at his brother’s body on the ground, his face filled with disbelief. After a few seconds of shock, rage exploded through him. He roared, his eyes bloodshot, "You dare kill my brother?!"
Bull’s head was buzzing; he was completely dazed.
’Brother Drake is dead? Just like that?!’
He saw Logan Sawyer about to rush forward to fight to the death and quickly grabbed him. Inwardly, he was secretly pleased. ’It’s actually a good thing Quentin Sawyer is dead!’
Quentin Sawyer and Leonard Miller were always bullying people and had done many despicable things. The team had long been unhappy with them, but they were afraid of their superpowers, so no one dared to speak up.
Luna Dawson remained completely calm, her tone chillingly deep. "Before he laid a hand on my family, he should have considered whether he could afford the price!"
’In this life, her family is her reverse scale—touch them, and you die!’
As Luna Dawson finished speaking, her companions raised their guns, aiming them at Logan Sawyer and his six men.
Only then did the men notice several tall, fully-equipped men walking up from behind Luna Dawson. They were all radiating killing intent, and the sight made their hearts sink. They were so terrified their knees nearly gave out, threatening to dump them in the snow.
They cursed inwardly. ’It’s over!’
’Aren’t these the badasses who surrounded and slaughtered that horde of zombies earlier?!’
Logan Sawyer’s eyes, however, were red-rimmed and bloodshot as he stared fixedly at the masked woman before him.
His rationality had been burned away by rage and grief. A towering wave of hatred surged toward Luna Dawson.
A small vortex of wind instantly gathered in his palm, and the snowflakes at his feet began to swirl. He was just about to activate his superpower and charge forward.
"Brother Charleston! Charlotte Caldwell is still waiting for you at home!"
Bull yelled out in desperation, holding him back with all his might.
Leonard Miller also finally snapped out of it, his guts twisting with regret.
’I really shouldn’t have run my mouth and egged Quentin Sawyer on!’
He quickly stepped forward and tried to persuade him earnestly, "Mr. Sawyer, we were in the wrong. Brother Drake made the first move..."
Logan Sawyer gritted his teeth, his gaze still locked on Luna Dawson.
He roared, "Even if my brother was in the wrong, he didn’t even hurt any of your people! How can you be so vicious, killing him just like that?!"
He slowly raised his head, his gaze sweeping over the six men beside him, his eyes churning with unconcealable grief, indignation, and disappointment.
Most of these men were his former colleagues and subordinates. On the day the apocalypse began, he had been leading them as they worked overtime to meet a deadline at their company.
Meanwhile, Quentin Sawyer ran a 24-hour convenience store on the ground floor of their office building.
The moment the apocalypse broke out, Quentin Sawyer abandoned his little store without a second thought and desperately ran up to the twenty-fourth floor to join him.
At that time, there were many others in the office building working overtime just like them.
No amount of war preparations or stockpiling could stop the corporate drones from working.
Back then, besides the zombies, there were still quite a few living people in the building, but their supplies ran out within a few days.
It was Quentin Sawyer who first suggested bringing the supplies from the convenience store upstairs to tide them over.
After that, the two brothers led a dozen or so brave men with them, fighting their way downstairs.
Braving the attacks of scattered zombies inside the building, they carried supplies from the convenience store back to the twenty-fourth floor, trip after trip. Those supplies became the hope for all of them to survive.
There were over sixty survivors in the building at that time, but in the end, some died and others scattered. Only the dozen or so people in their team made it out alive.
If it weren’t for Quentin Sawyer’s ruthlessness and decisiveness, they probably would have starved to death in their twenty-fourth-floor office in the early days of the apocalypse.
Logan Sawyer also knew that his brother was impulsive and had indeed done many outrageous things.
He lusted after beautiful women and made advances on the women in the building. However, most of those women didn’t resist much, and Quentin Sawyer would give them some supplies as compensation afterward, so it never caused any major trouble. Because of this, Logan didn’t restrain him too much.
Over the past few months, Quentin Sawyer had caused a lot of trouble, and every time, it was Logan who had to step in and clean up his messes using his own saved-up supplies.
The two brothers had some conflicts over it, but every time, Quentin Sawyer would take the initiative to admit his mistake and promise not to do it again. Out of brotherly affection, Logan Sawyer ultimately chose to compromise time and time again.
That was his own brother!
The only person left in this apocalypse who shared his blood!
He was the brother who had helped him stabilize the team and secure his position as leader!
’So what if he made a few mistakes?!’
"Without my brother, you all would have starved to death on the twenty-fourth floor in the first week of the apocalypse! And now you’re telling me to let it go?!"
Logan Sawyer’s words pierced the hearts of the other six men like nails.
No one dared to make a sound...
Everything he said was the truth.
Seeing the six men around him with their heads bowed in silent cowardice, Logan Sawyer’s heart filled with even greater grief and indignation.
Watching Logan Sawyer’s impotent rage, Luna Dawson was suddenly amused and let out a small laugh.
She put away her gun. Gripping a bayonet, she slowly paced in front of the men.
They watched in greater horror as the gun in Luna Dawson’s hand vanished into thin air.
Leonard Miller exclaimed in shock, "A Space Superpower User!"
The others also looked over in astonishment, muttering under their breath.
"No wonder all the supplies are gone!"
Bull forced his mouth open. "I’m sorry... Didn’t you say we were even? Please, let us go..."
Luna Dawson pointed her Triangular Bayonet at Logan Sawyer. "It seems someone doesn’t want to call it even. My family was here peacefully collecting supplies and didn’t provoke you. If we didn’t have guns or superpowers, wouldn’t we have been burned to death by your brother?"
Logan Sawyer’s heart trembled.
His mouth opened and closed, but his throat felt as if it were blocked by a boulder, and he couldn’t make a sound.
How could he not know? But for the past two months, their team had been the bosses of this area.
Everyone they met had to submit to them. It was only natural to think that everyone should be afraid of them.
Even he himself had unknowingly developed this mentality.
In the apocalypse, Superpower Users all felt they were naturally superior, and they would order the ordinary people in their teams around.
Seeing Logan Sawyer rebuked into silence, Bull immediately begged for mercy. "It’s our fault! Ma’am! We’re sorry!"
’Quentin Sawyer had been arrogant for so long. Today, he’d really messed with the wrong people!’
’If their opponent was truly ruthless, every last one of them would be dead.’
Just as the two sides were in a standoff, a strange sound came from the distance.
They were a group of Superpower Users who had been gathered in one spot for too long. On top of that, they had fired a gun. The commotion had attracted something else.
Luna Dawson quickly released her spiritual power, sensing her surroundings.
Strangely, she couldn’t sense any anomalies—just some zombies wandering around in different places, and a few mutated plants and animals.
