Cheng Yuan knew why Bai Xuening resented him so much, but far from being angry, he gave her a generous smile.

It was his way of saying, ’Let’s let bygones be bygones.’

But Bai Xuening completely misunderstood his intention, thinking he was mocking her for putting on an act.

Bai Xuening’s pretty face paled with anger.

Bai Xuening spun around, her heels clicking as she swayed her slender figure and strode quickly toward the hotel entrance.

The other classmates hurried to catch up, leaving only Cheng Yuan and Xu Ke behind.

Xu Ke flipped a middle finger at Bai Xuening’s retreating back. "What’s she so cocky about? Does she really think she’s hot stuff?"

Cheng Yuan shrugged. "She’s irrelevant. Just ignore her."

"True that. We have to drink hard today. We’re not leaving until we’re smashed!"

Cheng Yuan had learned his lesson the hard way from getting drunk yesterday and had no intention of repeating the experience. He quickly shook his head.

"We’re all friends here. Let’s just drink in moderation."

"That’s not up to you, Brother Yuan."

The two of them deliberately slowed their pace, partly to catch up and partly because they didn’t want to watch Bai Xuening and Tang Mingcheng show off.

Surrounded by their classmates, Tang Mingcheng and Bai Xuening entered the hotel lobby.

On their way in, several hotel guests greeted Tang Mingcheng, and the lobby manager was exceptionally polite. This all made Bai Xuening feel incredibly smug.

The classmates exchanged glances, their curiosity about Tang Mingcheng’s family background growing.

Just as Tang Mingcheng was exchanging pleasantries with the lobby manager, a familiar voice suddenly cut in.

"Hello, I have a reservation for the Evergreen Pavilion."

"The Evergreen Pavilion is on the eighth floor. Go straight ahead and turn right for the elevators."

"Thank you."

Tang Mingcheng instinctively turned his head and saw a face so beautiful it was almost otherworldly.

Tang Mingcheng quickly excused himself to the lobby manager, then grabbed Bai Xuening’s hand and hurried over to the young woman.

The classmates were stunned, wondering what had gotten into Tang Mingcheng.

Soon, Tang Mingcheng had pulled Bai Xuening in front of the impossibly beautiful woman.

If Bai Xuening was a white swan among her female classmates...

...then in front of this woman, she was instantly transformed into an ugly duckling.

The woman was only wearing a simple business suit with no jewelry and light makeup, yet she effortlessly outshone Bai Xuening.

In this woman’s presence, Bai Xuening couldn’t find a single shred of her usual superiority.

Bai Xuening’s heart began to pound in panic. ’Is it happening again? Is another man about to be snatched away from me?’

Fortunately, her fears were unfounded.

Tang Mingcheng’s attitude toward the woman was extremely deferential, as if he were facing an elder, or someone from a completely different world. "President Lin, hello! I’m Tang Mingcheng, Tang Xiao’s son."

A look of dawning recognition crossed Lin Ruoxi’s face. Tang Xiao was a wealthy merchant from Luocheng who had brought his son to the inaugural auction to show his support, though their seats had been near the back.

As such, she didn’t have a strong impression of Tang Mingcheng.

Lin Ruoxi gave a slight nod. "Ah, Young Master Tang. Are you here to eat as well?"

The fact that Lin Ruoxi had actually replied left Tang Mingcheng feeling flattered and a little star-struck. After all, there had been so many dignitaries at the inaugural auction that only those in the first three rows had gotten a chance to speak with her.

Tang Mingcheng struggled to contain his excitement. "President Lin, it must be fate that we’ve met. I’ll have to stop by later to offer you a toast."

Lin Ruoxi barely lifted her eyes. "You’re too kind, Young Master Tang."

Just then, Lin Ruoxi’s phone rang. She gave Tang Mingcheng a slight nod and answered. "Mr. Dong, have you arrived? I’ll come down to meet you."

With that, Lin Ruoxi headed toward the hotel entrance.

Only after Lin Ruoxi had walked out the main entrance did Tang Mingcheng pull his gaze away. He then headed for the elevators, once again surrounded by his classmates.

Once they were in the elevator, Bai Xuening voiced the question on her mind.

"Mingcheng, that woman didn’t look much older than us. Why were you so respectful? Is she from a powerful family?"

The other classmates around them also looked over, their faces full of curiosity.

Tang Mingcheng said, with a hint of pride, "President Lin’s background isn’t just powerful, it’s immense! She’s rumored to be the direct heiress of a major family from the Provincial City! I have no idea why she came to Luocheng to open the Yuanxi Auction House, but at its inaugural auction, every leader and tycoon in Luocheng was there to show their support. Even a ton of leaders and tycoons from the Provincial City came! My family has a bit of pull here in Luocheng, but at the Yuanxi auction, my dad could only get a seat in the very last row!"

The classmates listened, dumbfounded and utterly shocked.

"No wonder I was so nervous I barely dared to breathe around her! So she’s that influential!"

"Xue Ning has such great taste in men! Young Master Tang can chat so casually with a major figure like President Lin. He’s clearly destined for greatness!"

Bai Xuening’s eyes flickered. ’So that was President Lin?’

She was minoring in Ancient Cultural Studies.

The Zhang Zhigang affair had been blowing up in antique circles recently, so Bai Xuening was already well aware of President Lin’s renowned name.

Someone as important as President Lin would surely never be interested in her boyfriend. At that thought, Bai Xuening could finally relax.

Like a proud swan, Bai Xuening lifted her chin. "My Mingcheng has already spoken with President Lin. In a few days, I’ll be starting at Yuanxi as an intern Antique Appraiser."

Most of the classmates didn’t know what Yuanxi was, nor what an Antique Appraiser did, so they were confused. Why was Bai Xuening acting so proud?

’It’s just an internship, isn’t it?’

Bai Xuening’s best friend, He Ningning, had also taken the Ancient Cultural Studies elective and had been following the Zhang Zhigang news closely. She therefore knew all about the Yuanxi auction, and an expression of pure envy appeared on her face.

"An Antique Appraiser’s commission is tied to the number and value of the items. Yuanxi is so popular that even an intern’s monthly salary would be six figures or more!"

A six-figure monthly salary?

At these words, the classmates’ eyes filled with a mixture of envy, jealousy, and resentment.

They were already college seniors doing internships, most of them earning peanuts—two or three thousand a month. But here was Bai Xuening, starting at over 100,000 a month!

How could the gap between people be so vast?

Tang Mingcheng’s expression turned a little stiff. He and President Lin were barely nodding acquaintances; he had nowhere near enough influence to get Bai Xuening a job at Yuanxi.

But with so many people watching, he was too embarrassed to contradict her.

’I’ll just have to try my luck when I go over for that toast later!’

’Even if I fail, none of these classmates will be there to see it.’

...

Meanwhile, as Cheng Yuan and Xu Ke were slowly making their way into the hotel lobby, Xu Ke’s eyes suddenly lit up and he slapped Cheng Yuan on the shoulder.

"Hahaha, Brother Yuan, you’re full of surprises! You brought your girlfriend and didn’t even give me a heads-up? With a girlfriend like that, you could absolutely grind Bai Xuening into dust!"

’Girlfriend?’

Cheng Yuan froze for a second, then instinctively looked up and saw Lin Ruoxi. A smile immediately spread across his face. "Ruoxi, what a coincidence. Are you meeting Mr. Lei here at the Hilton?"

"And you?"

"I have a class reunion today. We’re in the Champion Scholar Pavilion on the eighth floor."

"I’m on the eighth floor, too. I’ll stop by for a toast later."

After saying this, Lin Ruoxi nodded to Xu Ke and turned to leave.

She took a few steps, then stopped and looked back at Cheng Yuan with a teasing smile. "Don’t drink too much today! And you’d better be home before ten."
