Chapter 1712 - 2014: The Mysterious Coffin (Part 1)
After checking the surroundings for a while to ensure there was no danger, Ling Chen signaled to Qiu Yong and the others above. Soon, everyone climbed down successively.
On the walls of the secret chamber, many torches were affixed. Ling Chen took out a lighter and lit them, instantly brightening the previously dark chamber.
Picking up one of the torches, Ling Chen pointed to a door on the northeast side of the secret chamber and said, "Let’s go in there and take a look. Eighth brother, could you help keep an eye out for any traps?"
Wei Jiahao responded and took the lead. His steps were slow; every few steps, he would check the surrounding area to ensure there were no trap mechanisms.
Before long, the group passed through a long corridor and entered a room filled with statues. The room was spacious, at least a hundred square meters, with several statues placed on both sides of the entrance, covered in dust due to their age.
Ling Chen held up the torch and illuminated the statues in front of him, inspecting them carefully.
These statues seemed to depict the same person but in various poses, each carved from hundreds of pounds of stone. From their appearance, the subject was a middle-aged man with a commanding presence, exuding an aura of superiority.
Ling Chen mused to himself about whether this person was narcissistic, given the number of statues. While lost in thought, he heard Xu Ming’s voice coming from the opposite side: "Big brother, sixth brother, come and take a look."
Upon hearing the call, Ling Chen and the group moved quickly over. As they approached Xu Ming and saw what was in front of him, their expressions changed.
A coffin was hidden in this secret chamber.
For some reason, upon seeing this coffin, he felt a chill on his back, as if a cold wind had blown through, making him uncomfortable.
"Who could be inside the coffin?" Wei Jiahao asked curiously.
"Given the number of statues here, the person inside could well be him," Xu Ming said. "This person might have been the former sect leader of Dangyang Sect. Otherwise, no one else would have built such a secret chamber in their sect."
Ling Chen nodded in agreement, saying, "Judging from the structure of the chamber, it should have been built along with the rest of this construction. It’s possible this person was Dangyang Sect’s earliest sect leader."
"Not necessarily," Qiu Yong countered. "From what I know, Dangyang Sect underwent renovations. When it was initially founded, Dangyang was just a minor sect and couldn’t have erected such grand buildings. It wasn’t until its fame gradually spread and it became a major sect in Martial Arts that Dangyang underwent extensive renovations to match its new prestigious image. All previous buildings were demolished and rebuilt."
After hearing Qiu Yong’s account, Ling Chen recalled something and said, "I remember Elder Ling once mentioned Dangyang Sect, praising one of its sect leaders highly, saying he was a rare talent in a century. At a young age, he had already broken through to the Heavenly List realm. In a short decade, his progress had been swift, defeating countless opponents, eventually ranking among the top Martial Arts experts. Moreover, Elder Ling particularly admired his Cloud Clearing Palm technique. It’s said that this skill was Dangyang Sect’s ultimate skill, and only that sect leader had successfully mastered it. However, for unknown reasons, after that person died, the training manual for the Cloud Clearing Palm disappeared."
"Now that you mention it, I do have a bit of a recollection," Qiu Yong said. "If I’m not mistaken, the person was surnamed Zhu, named Zhu Yuzhi, a genius of the Dangyang Sect. He was well-known in Martial Arts several hundred years ago. Because of him, Dangyang Sect, previously obscure, suddenly rose to fame. So, are these statues here of Zhu Yuzhi himself?"
"Very likely." Ling Chen nodded and said, "This place hosts a coffin, possibly with him inside."
"Should we open the coffin and take a look?" Qiu Yong suggested.
"Big brother, by no means," Ling Chen quickly halted Qiu Yong’s suggestion. He recalled being startled by He Zhishen when he discovered his tomb. With this coffin here, who knows what might be inside; if Zhu Yuzhi inside turns out to be alive like He Zhishen was, they would be in big trouble.
"Sixth brother, what’s the matter? Are you afraid of a dead person?"
Hearing Qiu Yong’s question, Ling Chen shook his head, "That’s not what I mean, it’s just..." He paused, then switched the topic, questioning, "Big brother, does anyone know how Zhu Yuzhi actually died?"
"Well... I’m not quite sure. Why ask about this suddenly? It’s a figure from several hundred years ago; are you worried he might come back to life?"
Ling Chen touched his nose; quite frankly, he did worry that Zhu Yuzhi inside the coffin might suddenly revive, since it wouldn’t be the first time. Qiu Yong and the others were unaware of the situation, so they felt nothing.
"Big brother, trust me, you shouldn’t joke about something like this. If you want to open the coffin, it’s best to first ascertain the manner of Zhu Yuzhi’s death."
On the side, Xu Ming suggested, "Dangyang Sect surely has many records they’ve preserved. Perhaps those records might hold information. Shall we try looking?"
"That sounds like a good idea."
Immediately, the group climbed back out to the hall along the rope. They stationed guards at the secret passage entrance while Ling Chen, Qiu Yong, and others headed straight to Dangyang Sect’s Book Collection Pavilion. Upon entering, they found most of the books within had been damaged, with some yellowing tomes strewn all over.
Seeing this scene, Ling Chen couldn’t help shaking his head. These records were Dangyang Sect’s most precious treasures, documenting the history of Martial Arts. Unfortunately, Qi Yong and others were not from Dangyang Sect; they had seized the position of sect leader by force. Therefore, they felt no belonging to Dangyang Sect and didn’t appreciate these records’ value.
The group picked up the scattered records, checking them one by one, hoping to find some mention of Zhu Yuzhi. After searching for a while, Ling Chen found these records were annotated; whenever a sect leader was in charge of Dangyang Sect, their name would be noted on the record cover. This undoubtedly brought great convenience for Ling Chen and his team.
It didn’t take them much time to find a few records about Zhu Yuzhi.
"As I thought, most of this contains accounts of Zhu Yuzhi’s life," Qiu Yong said.
"Is there anything about his last moments before death?"
Qiu Yong shook his head, "No, it only mentions that Zhu Yuzhi eventually disappeared without a trace."
