Chapter 1714 - 2016: The Mysterious Coffin (Part 3)
Seeing the coffin being opened, the onlookers hastily pinched their noses to avoid the smell of decay. However, unexpectedly, there was no stench from the coffin, but rather a faint fragrance. Ling Chen slowly leaned forward, wanting to clearly see who was lying inside. When the entire interior of the coffin was revealed to him, his face suddenly changed, and he quickly backed away.
"Quick... get out!" he hurriedly shouted. Chen Junfeng and Tong Zhentian, not knowing what had happened, saw Ling Chen’s anxious expression and immediately followed his instructions, rushing out of the iron cage.
After leaving the cage, Ling Chen wasted no time in locking the iron door, sealing the coffin inside.
Seeing Ling Chen’s somewhat pale face, Xu Ming asked in confusion, "Sixth Brother, what happened to you?"
It was unclear whether Ling Chen heard Xu Ming’s question; his gaze remained fixed on the coffin inside the iron cage. The others noticed this and shifted their attention to the coffin as well. However, after a few minutes, nothing happened inside the cage.
"Sixth Brother, did you see it wrong?" Qiu Yong patted Ling Chen on the shoulder, asking.
"I... I don’t know." Ling Chen muttered. After hesitating for a moment, he returned to the iron door of the cage. As the door opened, everyone followed him inside.
In front of the coffin, all eyes were on the interior. When everyone saw clearly, their expressions changed. At that moment, they finally understood why Ling Chen reacted so strongly earlier. It turned out that inside the coffin lay a man, to be precise, a middle-aged man. The middle-aged man lay peacefully in the coffin, dressed in silk attire that was at least several hundred years old.
At this moment, the crowd was amazed that after so many years, the middle-aged man’s body remained intact with no signs of decay. "Everyone, step back a bit." Ling Chen said. With that, he extended a finger and gently moved it to the middle-aged man’s nose, checking for any sign of breath.
Seeing Ling Chen’s action, the crowd was puzzled. This person has been dead for hundreds of years, and yet he’s checking for breath, worried the middle-aged man might come back to life? Ling Chen didn’t care about their puzzled looks. Once he confirmed the body in the coffin had no breath, Ling Chen withdrew his finger and let out a relieved sigh. Fortunately, this person wasn’t breathing, and shouldn’t suddenly spring back to life.
Only then did he notice the strange looks from the people around him.
"Sixth Brother, you..."
Facing Qiu Yong’s question, Ling Chen smiled and said, "Nothing." Having said those three words, he decided that some things are better left unknown to others.
Seeing that Ling Chen was unwilling to say more, everyone refrained from asking further questions and instead refocused on the middle-aged man inside the coffin.
"Look at this man, his appearance is exactly like the statue in the secret chamber. If I’m not mistaken, he should be Zhu Yuzhi, who disappeared from the Dangyang Sect years ago," Xu Ming said.
Tong Zhentian said with a puzzled look, "I’ve heard about Zhu Yuzhi; he should be a representative figure in Dangyang Sect’s history. It was his sudden rise that made the Dangyang Sect a notable sect in the Martial Arts world. Unfortunately, the descendants of Dangyang Sect failed to live up to his legacy. Additionally, I can’t understand why he didn’t tell others of his whereabouts and chose to die silently."
"Perhaps Zhu Yuzhi knew he had a terminal illness back then, and aware of his impending death, he worried that without him, the Dangyang Sect would be bullied by outsiders. So he pretended to disappear. This way, outsiders wouldn’t dare to trouble the Dangyang Sect, not knowing his actual whereabouts."
Hearing Qiu Yong’s analysis, everyone nodded in agreement. It made sense, just like Su He of the Heavenly Mechanism Pavilion. Su He chose to leave the Heavenly Mechanism Pavilion without a trace back then; no one knew whether he was dead or alive. This uncertainty made people afraid to challenge the Heavenly Mechanism Pavilion. If Su He suddenly reappeared, it would have been asking for trouble.
"Elder Tong, how old was Zhu Yuzhi when he disappeared?" Ling Chen inquired.
"I’m not sure about that."
Xu Ming chimed in, "There’s no record in the Dangyang Sect’s annals; it was a matter from hundreds of years ago, impossible to verify." After a pause, he asked, "Sixth Brother, how do you plan to deal with this body?"
Ling Chen pondered for a while and said, "Let’s leave it here for now. Everyone’s had a long day, get some rest, and we’ll discuss the details tomorrow."
Leaving the base, Ling Chen sent everyone to the Dragon Tiger Hall, but he returned to the base alone.
Seeing his return, Hu Fei asked in confusion, "Didn’t you leave?"
"No nonsense, come with me." With that, the two of them returned to the iron cage containing the coffin. Opening the iron door, Ling Chen tossed the keys to Hu Fei, instructing, "Help me lock the door and then stand back a bit. Remember! If you see anything strange, don’t panic, go find help immediately. Understood?"
Hu Fei hesitated, and for some reason, Ling Chen’s words gave him an ominous feeling.
"Hey! Don’t do anything reckless. If you get hurt, my long vacation would be ruined."
Ling Chen acted as though he hadn’t heard Hu Fei and continued walking to the coffin, looking at Zhu Yuzhi lying inside. He then extended his hands, intending to lift the body out of the coffin. However, just as his hands touched the body, an extraordinary scene unfolded. Zhu Yuzhi’s body, along with his clothing, instantly turned into powder.
"This..." Deeming the situation, Ling Chen stood there, stunned and at a loss.
Zhu Yuzhi’s body seemed perfectly fine, yet with just a light touch, it turned out like this. However, amidst the shock, Ling Chen’s anxious heart was finally at ease. As long as this man wouldn’t rise again like He Zhishen, there was nothing to worry about.
As he pondered, the sharp-eyed Ling Chen suddenly noticed something amidst the layer of powder at the bottom of the coffin. He reached out, brushed aside the powder, and saw two yellowed ancient books beneath.
This is...
Ling Chen’s heart skipped a beat; he immediately picked up the two ancient books. Looking at the title of one of the books, his eyes instantly brimmed with excitement.
Cloud Clearing Palm!
It was the Dangyang Sect’s Sect’s Ultimate Skill Cloud Clearing Palm, long thought lost, now in his hands.
Taking a deep breath, Ling Chen calmed his emotions, and then shifted his gaze to the other ancient book, his eyes lighting up again.
