Chapter 47: The Festival Beneath a Thousand Stars
Morning arrived peacefully over Black Mountain.
Golden sunlight poured from beyond the horizon, washing over the world in a sea of warm light, The endless forests surrounding the mountain swayed gently beneath the morning breeze, their emerald canopies glittering with droplets of dew.
Below, crystal-clear rivers wound through valleys like silver ribbons.
Birds soared through the sky.
Flowers bloomed across the mountainside.
Life flourished.
The scars of war that had once covered these lands were slowly disappearing, reclaimed by time and nature.
Black Mountain stood proudly beneath the heavens.
The same mountain that had once been reduced to ruins.
Now it stood stronger than ever.
Peace had returned.
Life had returned.
Hope had returned.
And inside the castle-
Astraith was asleep.
Very asleep.
Dangerously asleep.
The Celestial Dragon had somehow wrapped herself inside three separate blankets during the night.
Half of her body hung off the edge of the enormous bed.
One pillow rested on the floor.
Another had somehow become lodged between the headboard and the wall.
Nobody knew how.
Not even reality itself.
Meanwhile-
Vlox stood beside the bed.
Watching.
Waiting.
Patiently.
Five minutes passed.
Nothing happened.
Ten minutes passed.
Still nothing.
Twenty minutes passed.
The dragon remained completely motionless.
Vlox folded his arms.
"Astraith."
No response.
"Astraith."
Silence.
The dragon continued sleeping peacefully.
As though the fate of existence depended on her ability to ignore mornings.
Vlox sighed.
Then gently poked her cheek.
The reaction was immediate.
Astraith grabbed his hand.
Pulled it closer.
Then used it as a pillow.
"..."
"..."
The creator of the Omniverse stared at the sleeping dragon.
Astraith smiled peacefully in her sleep.
Completely unaware of what she had done.
For a moment, Vlox simply looked at her.
Then a soft laugh escaped him.
Because moments like this reminded him why he loved her.
Not because she was powerful.
Not because she was beautiful.
Not because she was a legendary Celestial Dragon feared across countless worlds.
But because she was Astraith.
Simple.
Honest.
Chaotic.
Endlessly troublesome.
And completely irreplaceable.
Eventually-
One golden eye slowly opened.
Then the other.
The dragon stared at him for several seconds.
Then immediately closed both eyes again.
"I refuse."
Vlox raised an eyebrow.
"You refuse what?"
"Morning."
"Astraith."
"Five more hours."
"Hours?"
"Maybe six."
Vlox laughed.
The dragon groaned dramatically.
Then finally sat up.
Her silver hair looked completely chaotic.
Several strands pointed in impossible directions.
She resembled someone who had fought an entire army made of pillows.
And lost.
Badly.
Vlox smiled.
The dragon narrowed her eyes immediately.
"Don’t."
"I’m not saying anything."
"You’re thinking it."
"I absolutely am."
Astraith grabbed a pillow.
Threateningly.
Vlox remained completely unconcerned.
The dragon eventually surrendered.
There was little point attacking someone who could survive the destruction of universes.
Several hours later-
The two sat together inside the castle’s grand dining hall.
Sunlight streamed through towering crystal windows.
The enormous room glowed with warmth.
At the center stood a dining table.
Or rather-
A battlefield.
Because Astraith had personally requested breakfast.
And when Astraith requested breakfast, normal standards ceased to exist.
The table overflowed with food.
Fresh bread.
Honey pancakes.
Golden waffles.
Cheese omelets.
Berry pastries.
Fruit salads.
Sweet cream rolls.
Roasted potatoes.
Honey-glazed ham.
Fresh juice.
And enough food to sustain a small army.
Astraith stared.
Her golden eyes sparkled.
Vlox immediately recognized the expression.
It was the same expression she wore whenever she discovered a new dessert.
Five minutes later-
Half the table was gone.
Ten minutes later-
Only a few dishes remained.
Fifteen minutes later-
Vlox found himself genuinely questioning how dragons functioned.
The dragon finally leaned back in her chair.
A satisfied smile appeared on her face.
"Perfect."
Vlox slowly sipped his tea.
"Astraith."
"Yes?"
"Where does all that food go?"
The dragon blinked.
"What do you mean?"
"You ate enough food to feed a city."
"I’m growing."
"You stopped growing thousands of years ago."
Astraith considered this.
Then nodded.
"Good point."
Vlox laughed.
The dragon smiled proudly.
As though she had solved some great mystery.
After breakfast-
The two left the castle.
Not because they needed to.
Not because there was danger.
Or responsibility.
Or a mission waiting for them.
Simply because they wanted to.
For once-
Life was peaceful.
And they intended to enjoy every second of it.
The morning slowly gave way to afternoon as they traveled through the southern lands.
Rolling hills stretched endlessly before them.
Golden fields danced beneath the wind.
Villages thrived beneath clear skies.
Children played freely.
Farmers worked peacefully.
The world looked alive.
Healthy.
Free.
Several hours later-
A large kingdom appeared in the distance.
Its towering walls gleamed beneath the sunlight.
Colorful banners fluttered above stone towers.
Music drifted through the air.
Laughter echoed beyond the gates.
The city felt unusually lively.
Astraith blinked.
"Vlox."
"Hm?"
"What’s happening?"
Vlox looked toward the city.
Then smiled.
"A festival."
The dragon froze.
"A festival?"
"Looks like it."
Astraith’s eyes widened.
A festival.
That single word carried immense meaning.
Food.
Entertainment.
Games.
Food.
Music.
Food.
And possibly even more food.
The dragon grabbed Vlox’s arm immediately.
"We’re staying."
Vlox wasn’t surprised.
"Of course we are."
The festival was enormous.
The moment they entered the city, Astraith became completely overwhelmed.
Thousands of people filled the streets.
Colorful banners stretched between buildings.
Musicians performed on every corner.
Dancers entertained crowds.
Artists painted portraits.
Street performers amazed spectators.
Children laughed while chasing each other through the crowds.
The atmosphere felt alive.
Warm.
Joyful.
For a brief moment-
Astraith simply stood there.
Watching.
Listening.
Smiling.
Then-
A delicious smell reached her nose.
Everything changed.
The dragon froze.
Her eyes widened.
Vlox immediately noticed.
"Oh no."
Astraith slowly turned her head.
Then another.
Then another.
The entire street was lined with food stalls.
Grilled meat skewers.
Butter naan.
Roasted chicken.
Honey-glazed ribs.
Spicy noodles.
Sweet cakes.
Fruit pies.
Chocolate pastries.
Ice cream.
Fried dumplings.
Fresh bread.
The dragon looked overwhelmed.
Not emotionally.
Spiritually.
This was paradise.
One hour later-
Vlox carried six food containers.
Astraith carried ten.
And somehow-
She was still eating.
The dragon happily walked through the festival while holding a meat skewer in one hand.
A fruit tart in the other.
Meanwhile-
She was somehow eating roasted chicken at the same time.
Vlox genuinely had no explanation.
The laws of reality appeared to stop functioning whenever Astraith encountered food.
"This festival is amazing."
Vlox looked at the mountain of food she had already consumed.
"Clearly."
Astraith ignored him.
Instead-
She spotted another food stall.
And immediately dragged him toward it.
The afternoon passed quickly.
Together they explored every corner of the festival.
They listened to musicians perform ancient songs.
Watched acrobats leap between rooftops.
Visited colorful markets.
Admired handcrafted jewelry.
Observed artists creating beautiful paintings.
For the first time in a long while-
Neither of them worried about tomorrow.
There was only today.
Only this moment.
Only peace.
Then Astraith discovered the games section.
Vlox immediately knew disaster was approaching.
One particular stall caught her attention.
Participants had to throw rings onto wooden targets.
The grand prize sat proudly above the stall.
A giant stuffed dragon.
Its silver scales looked remarkably similar to Astraith.
The dragon pointed.
"I want it."
The stall owner smiled.
"Three throws."
Astraith nodded confidently.
Several spectators gathered.
The dragon took aim.
Then threw.
Miss.
Astraith blinked.
She tried again.
Miss.
Silence.
One final throw.
Miss.
The crowd remained silent.
The stall owner remained silent.
The targets remained silent.
Astraith stared.
The targets stared back.
"..."
"..."
"..."
Vlox began laughing.
Astraith immediately pointed accusingly.
"They cheated."
"The rings cheated?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"They moved."
The targets had not moved.
At all.
The stall owner looked deeply confused.
Vlox laughed even harder.
Astraith crossed her arms.
"This game is clearly rigged."
Fortunately-
Vlox simply purchased the stuffed dragon.
Problem solved.
The dragon immediately hugged it.
Her mood improved instantly.
As evening approached-
The festival transformed.
Thousands of lanterns illuminated the streets.
Golden lights replaced sunlight.
The entire city seemed to glow.
Music filled the night.
The atmosphere became almost magical.
Astraith looked around in amazement.
Then-
BOOM.
A firework exploded overhead.
Then another.
And another.
Countless colors illuminated the heavens.
Blue.
Red.
Gold.
Silver.
The sky became a canvas painted with light.
The crowd cheered.
Children laughed.
Families smiled.
Everyone looked upward.
Including Astraith.
For several moments-
She simply stared.
Watching the fireworks.
Watching the colors.
Watching the beautiful lights dancing across the heavens.
The explosions reflected within her golden eyes.
And for a brief moment-
Vlox stopped watching the fireworks.
Instead-
He watched her.
Because despite everything happening around them-
She remained the most beautiful thing in his world.
Astraith eventually noticed.
Then immediately became embarrassed.
"Why are you staring?"
Vlox smiled.
"No reason."
The dragon narrowed her eyes.
"That’s suspicious."
"Maybe."
Astraith’s cheeks turned slightly red.
Yet she couldn’t stop smiling.
Later that night-
The two climbed a quiet hill overlooking the festival.
The city glowed beneath them.
Thousands of lanterns illuminated the darkness.
The distant sounds of music and laughter drifted through the air.
Fireworks continued exploding overhead.
The stars shone brightly above.
Astraith sat beside Vlox.
Her giant stuffed dragon rested comfortably on her lap.
And surprisingly-
She wasn’t eating.
For once.
The dragon quietly watched the festival below.
The happiness.
The laughter.
The life.
Then she smiled.
"This was fun."
Vlox nodded.
"It was."
Astraith leaned against his shoulder.
The cool night breeze flowed around them.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Words weren’t necessary.
The moment itself was enough.
Eventually-
Astraith quietly reached for his hand.
Then intertwined her fingers with his.
A small gesture.
A simple gesture.
Yet one that carried more meaning than words.
Vlox smiled softly.
Then gently squeezed her hand.
The dragon’s smile widened.
Below them-
The festival continued.
Above them-
The stars illuminated the heavens.
And between those two worlds-
The creator of the Omniverse and the dragon he loved sat together beneath the night sky.
Not as legends.
Not as heroes.
Not as beings feared across countless worlds.
Simply as two people enjoying a peaceful evening.
The kind of evening they had fought to protect.
The kind of happiness that made every sacrifice worthwhile.
And beneath a thousand stars-
They remained together.
Exactly where they belonged.
