Adrian looked at the door.
Neither side moved.
The voice outside remained patient.
"I believe you have something that belongs to us."
His eyes moved briefly to the clock. 3:21 PM. The System’s second condition was still active at the edge of his vision.
OBSERVE WITHOUT INTERFERENCE.
He had spent the entire day watching other people move pieces across a board he hadn’t known existed. The FCA investigation arriving without warning. The investors. The surveillance. The photographs in Crane’s wall. The documents reaching back to 1978.
Now someone had come directly to his office.
That changed the calculation. Not because the approach was threatening. Because whoever stood outside had chosen to enter his territory rather than observe it from a distance. That was a different kind of move.
"Who are you?" Adrian asked.
A pause.
"Someone who has been waiting for you to ask that question."
He recognised the construction immediately — an answer designed to sound significant while revealing nothing. The kind of language people used when they wanted to maintain the appearance of holding something back.
He walked to the door. His hand rested on the handle for a moment without turning it.
Then he stepped back.
"Come in."

The man who entered was in his late sixties, perhaps early seventies. Tall, lean, silver-haired. He wore a charcoal suit that would have been entirely unremarkable if not for the fact that every detail about him seemed deliberately restrained — the kind of restraint that didn’t come from modesty but from long practice at not drawing attention.
No watch. No security. No assistant. No briefcase.
He closed the door behind him and let his eyes settle on Adrian without speaking.
"You look more like your father than the records suggested," he said finally.
Adrian’s expression moved by less than a fraction.
"You knew my father?"
"I knew of him."
"That’s not what I asked."
The man accepted the correction without deflecting from it.
"No," he said. "I didn’t know him personally."
Adrian gestured toward the chair opposite the desk.
"Sit."
He did. Adrian remained standing.
"Your name."
"Edward Vale."
The surname registered immediately.
"Jonathan Vale’s family."
"His uncle." A faint trace of something — not quite amusement, but close — crossed Edward Vale’s face. "He doesn’t know I’m here."
"What belongs to you?"
Vale’s eyes moved to the desk.
"The folder."
Adrian looked at Ashcroft’s dark-blue folder.
"The R.A.C. report."
"That’s one description of it."
"Is it yours?"
"No."
"Then whose?"
Vale looked at him with the specific patience of someone who had decided in advance how much of this conversation they were prepared to have.
"That is precisely the question you are not yet ready to ask."
The room was quiet for a moment.
"I’ve spent most of today," Adrian said, "being told which questions I’m not ready to ask."
"Then perhaps you should consider what that pattern indicates."
Adrian studied him.
The man wasn’t threatening him. He wasn’t negotiating in any conventional sense. He was doing what everyone had been doing today — testing. Presenting information in a specific sequence and watching how Adrian responded to each element.
The same pattern.
Always the same pattern.
Present something. Wait. Observe the reaction. Decide what to do next based on what the reaction revealed.
Adrian sat down.
"Let me save us some time," he said. "You came here expecting me to ask about my father. About the R.A.C. About 1978. About whatever connection you believe exists between all of them."
Vale said nothing.
"You expected me to demand answers. And when I did, you’d provide just enough to keep me investigating — enough to keep my attention oriented in a specific direction while whatever else is happening continues without my interference."
A faint smile appeared.
"You’ve learned quickly."
"No." Adrian looked at him directly. "I’ve learned to recognise when someone wants me to spend my time solving their problem rather than my own."
The smile disappeared.
For the first time, Vale looked genuinely interested rather than evaluative.
"Then what problem do you think you’re solving?"
"I haven’t decided yet."
Adrian stood.
"Which is why you’re leaving."
Vale didn’t move.
"Why?"
"Because I have something more important to do."
"More important," Vale said carefully, "than understanding who has been watching your family for nearly fifty years?"
"Yes."
Vale’s expression shifted.
"What?"
Adrian walked to the window.
London spread below him in the late afternoon light — vast, restless, completely indifferent to whatever was happening in this office.
"Build," he said.
Vale was quiet.
"I’ve spent months acquiring companies because acquiring capability was faster than building it from nothing. Semiconductors. Electronics. Industrial capacity. Supply chains." He turned. "But there’s a limit to how far that strategy takes me. If I keep acquiring, I’ll eventually own a collection of businesses. If I build something none of them currently know how to build, the question of who owns what changes completely."
Vale stood slowly.
"Be careful with that word."
"Which one?"
"Own."
Adrian almost smiled.
"That’s precisely why I said build instead."
Vale looked at him for a long moment. Then he moved toward the door with the unhurried pace of someone who had conducted this kind of conversation before and understood that the significant part of it was usually what happened after he left.
"You may find," he said, "that some things are already being built."
"Then they’ll have competition."
Vale stopped.
For a moment it seemed he was considering whether to say something else. Something that would have moved the conversation in a different direction.
Instead, he opened the door.
"Your father used to think differently."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
"About what?"
But Edward Vale had already stepped into the corridor.
The door closed.
Adrian stayed where he was.
He could have followed.
The System panel remained unchanged at the edge of his vision.

He had obeyed the instruction.
But the meeting had given him something more useful than any answer Vale might have provided.
Confirmation.

"Which companies specifically?"
"All of them."
A pause. "All of them?"

"Tonight?"
"Tomorrow morning. Calder."
Another pause, shorter this time.
"I’ll arrange it."
"And tell them this isn’t an acquisition meeting."
"What should I tell them it is?"
Adrian looked at the engineering reports on his desk.
"A construction meeting."

Adrian walked in carrying no folders.

"How much of this actually exists?" someone asked.

The battery researcher raised her hand.

"Not yet."
"You’re assuming a breakthrough."

The room was quiet in the specific way rooms went quiet when a number was larger than people had been expecting.
"That’s a significant capital commitment," the battery researcher said carefully.

"You’re describing a platform," the telecommunications specialist said.
"I’m describing the first component of one. The phone is the entry point." Adrian looked around the table. "The device should function as a phone when you need a phone. A computing terminal when you need one. A communication system when conventional networks are unavailable. A translation platform. A secure identity system. A medical-monitoring device. A navigation system that doesn’t depend on a single infrastructure provider."
Nobody interrupted.
"Most importantly, it should remain functional when the user has no access to conventional telecommunications infrastructure. Emergency connectivity. Resilient by design, not as a secondary feature."
The telecommunications specialist’s expression had shifted from scepticism to something more considered. "Direct satellite connectivity for standard consumer devices — that’s expensive infrastructure."
"So is being dependent on infrastructure you don’t control." Adrian looked at him. "We’ll build what we need to build."

The telecommunications group would begin developing a communications platform capable of functioning across both terrestrial and satellite networks, with resilience as a design requirement rather than an optional feature.
The decision that surprised them most came at the end.

"Eventually."

Nobody argued.

"Why not?"

Adrian opened the folder.
The positions had increased. Again. With no acquisition announcement, no major transaction, no obvious external catalyst.
"They’re buying because they’ve understood where this is heading," Adrian said.
"Apparently." Robert looked at him. "That’s different from the previous moves."
"Yes." Adrian closed the folder. "This time there’s no System reward behind it."
Robert didn’t fully understand the reference. But he understood the distinction.

He turned to the next document.
