The war room of Kael’s mansion in Starfall City was modest compared to the Vorn Estate’s facilities, but it served its purpose. A central table dominated the space, covered in maps and intelligence reports. Six chairs surrounded it.

Kael entered with Lira at his heels.

"Greetings, my lord."

The response came in unison—Yuki Tanaka, Vyra Sable, Gerard, Bruski, and Kelvin.

Kael waved them down and took his seat at the head of the table. "Report."

Vyra stepped forward, activating a holographic display. Trevor City materialized above the table—a sprawling urban maze three times the size of Starfall City, marked with colored zones indicating different power territories.

"The Shadow Hounds have completed their reconnaissance," Vyra began. "Trevor City is divided into several power zones, but the two most significant are controlled by guilds."

She highlighted the first zone—a fortified compound in the city’s northern district.

"Ironfang Guild. Mercenary organization, approximately four hundred members. Combat-focused, with a strict hierarchy and military discipline. Their guild master—Roderick Ashworth—is Spirit Soul Rank 1. They handle most of the legitimate protection contracts in the city and maintain a neutral relationship with the bandit groups."

The second highlight appeared in the eastern commercial district.

"Silver Crown Merchant Guild. Trade and information brokers, approximately three hundred members. Less combat-oriented but significantly wealthier. Their guild master—Elara Stark—is also Spirit Soul Rank 1, though she rarely fights personally. They control most of the city’s legitimate commerce and have extensive information networks."

Kael studied the display. "Two Spirit Soul Rank 1 guild masters. That’s not insignificant."

"No, my lord," Vyra agreed.

Kael then adds, "However, you’re Rank 2 Spirit Soul and a trained soldier. If negotiations fail, force is a viable option."

"But negotiations first," Kael said. "I want both guilds working for us, not destroyed. Having established mercenary and merchant networks under our control is more valuable than eliminating them. Convince them. If they refuse—" He shrugged. "Then do what you do best."

Vyra nodded.

Kelvin spoke next, his fingers adjusting the display to show the southern and western districts. "The bandit situation is more... complicated. Three major groups control different territories."

Three markers appeared.

"The first is led by a man called ’Scavenger’ Rook. Mana Heart Rank 6. He operates out of the warehouse district—specifically, a converted shipping hub near the southern gates. His group is the smallest, maybe sixty members, but they control the primary smuggling routes into the city."

The second marker pulsed in the eastern slums.

"’Bloodfang’ Marcus. Mana Heart Rank 7. The largest group—approximately two hundred members. He controls the eastern slums and runs most of the extortion and protection rackets. Brutal, direct, not particularly intelligent."

The final marker sat in the western docks.

"’Viper’ Selene. Mana Heart Rank 7. About one hundred fifty members. She controls the docks and the black market trade routes. More cunning than Marcus—she’s avoided direct conflict with the guilds by paying them a cut of her profits."

Kael studied the map. "Rook is the weakest link. We start there."

"Agreed, my Lord," Lira said. "Eliminating Rook disrupts the smuggling routes and sends a message to the other two. Marcus will likely respond with force. Selene will probably wait to see who wins before committing."

"Which is why we hit Marcus immediately after Rook," Kael continued. "Fast, brutal, no hesitation. Selene will either surrender or run. Either way, Trevor City becomes ours."

He looked at Yuki. "You’ll be in charge of Starfall City while we’re gone. Gerard will assist you."

Yuki inclined her head. "Understood, my lord."

"Prepare the soldiers for the attack on Greymoor City. Aldric De Vorn will know I’m coming for his territory—he’s had weeks to fortify. I want our forces ready to move the moment we return from Trevor City."

Yuki’s expression sharpened. "The hidden valley?"

"Those rare alchemical herbs will be extremely useful for Kelvin’s work. Aldric won’t give them up willingly, so we take them. Make sure the soldiers are drilled on siege tactics. We don’t know what defenses he’s constructed."

"I’ll see to it," Yuki said.

Kael stood. "We leave in thirty minutes. Vyra—you take your squad and handle the guilds. Lira, Bruski, you’re with me. Thirty Mana Heart soldiers, late to peak rank. We start with Rook’s warehouse."

An hour later, Trevor City’s borders appeared beneath them.

Kael rode a Wind Strider—massive flying beast with leathery wings and sufficient speed to carry three passengers. Beside him, Lira and Bruski occupied similar mounts. Behind them, thirty soldiers on smaller flying beasts formed a tight formation.

Below, Vyra split off with her squad of twelve—heading toward the northern and eastern districts where the guilds were located.

Kael’s group descended toward the warehouse district.

The southern gates were unguarded—who would attack a city full of bandits? The soldiers landed in an alley two blocks from Rook’s shipping hub, beasts vanishing into forest. Kael’s soul sense expanded, mapping the area.

Thirty-three meters. Every heartbeat, every footstep, every breath within range.

"Twelve guards outside," he murmured. "Mana Gathering to early Core Formation. Rook is inside with approximately forty others. Mixed ranks up to Rank 5 Mana heart realm."

Lira drew her daggers. Bruski cracked his remaining fist—the one-armed Hound grinning with anticipation.

"Kill the guards. We go in loud."

The soldiers moved.

Kael stayed back as shadows detached from the alley walls. Lira led the infiltration—her daggers finding throats before guards could scream. Bruski’s massive fist crushed skulls with single impacts. Within thirty seconds, twelve bodies lay in the alley.

"Move."

They hit the warehouse doors at a run.

BOOM.

Kael’s gravity-enhanced kick shattered the reinforced metal. The doors flew inward, crashing into the shipping hub’s interior.

Chaos erupted.

Bandits scrambled for weapons—swords, axes, crossbows. Shouts of alarm mixed with screams as the first wave of soldiers flooded through the entrance. Steel clashed against steel. Bodies hit the ground.

Kael walked through the carnage like a ghost.

A bandit charged him with a war axe—Rank 4 Mana Heart. Kael didn’t slow down. His hand rose, and gravity crushed—the man’s knees buckled, his axe dropped, and Kael’s blade opened his throat in a single motion.

Two more attacked simultaneously. Shadow Step carried Kael between their strikes. Both died before they realized he’d moved.

"Scavenger" Rook watched from an elevated platform near the back of the warehouse surrounded by his elite guards. His eyes narrowed as he watched Kael dismantle his people with casual efficiency.

"Who the fuck is that?" Rook muttered.

Then Kael’s silver-flecked gray eyes found his across the chaos.

Rook’s blood went cold.

The warehouse battle lasted four minutes. Forty bandits reduced to corpses and groaning wounded. The soldiers had taken minimal casualties—three injured, none dead.

Rook hadn’t moved from his platform.

Kael walked toward him, stepping over bodies without looking down. The surviving bandits fled through rear exits, abandoning their leader.

"Get down here," Kael called up. "Or I’ll come get you. Your choice."

Rook’s face twisted with rage—and fear.

"You think you can just walk into my territory and—"

Rook’s hand went to his weapon.

He jumped down from the platform, landing in a crouch, a pair of poisoned daggers appearing in his hands. His Mana Heart Rank 6 aura flared—greedy, desperate, the power of a man who had stolen everything he had and knew it could be taken away just as easily.

"You want to play then?" Rook snarled. "Let’s play."
