The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

Chapter 214: City Reports/ Second Lady

Five months had passed since Kael returned from the academy. Two of those months had been spent transforming Starfall City from a graveyard into a fortress.

Kael sat on his throne — a seat of black stone and silver inlays that Dorin had carved from a single block of shadow-iron ore. His posture was relaxed, one arm resting on the armrest, the other draped over his knee. To his right, Aria stood with her hands folded behind her back, her violet eyes scanning the hall with quiet alertness.

Before him, his inner circle occupied their designated seats.

Commander Yuki Tanaka sat rigid and straight-backed, her ice-blue eyes fixed forward. Beside her, Commander Vyra Sable — the Spirit Soul realm officer Cassandra had assigned — leaned back in her seat.

Bruski, Kael’s Hound, occupied a seat that was slightly too small for his massive frame, his one remaining arm resting on his knee. Across from him, Kelvin Henderson — clutched a stack of alchemy reports like they might spontaneously combust. Serena, the former prostitute turned pleasure district manager, sat with her legs crossed and her expression sharp, every inch the shrewd administrator she had become. Gerard stood at attention near the door, hands clasped behind his back, the picture of perfect butler discipline. Lira sat at the far end, her posture military-crisp, though the faintest pink touched her cheeks when Kael’s gaze passed over her.

"Kelvin," Kael said. "Report."

Kelvin stood, clearing his throat. "My Lord. The first batch of Body Tempering Pills has been distributed to the soldiers. Results are promising — average physical enhancement of twelve percent across the garrison within three weeks of the first dose. The stronger soldiers are showing fifteen to eighteen percent improvement."

He flipped a page. "The Poison Immunity Pills have also been deployed. Thirty soldiers have been assigned to explore the deeper mine tunnels — the sections previously sealed due to toxic gas pockets. We’ve already mapped two new veins of Starfall Iron and uncovered a small deposit of Void Copper, which Kelvin’s Alchemy Guild is currently studying for potential applications."

Kael nodded. "Good. Keep the poison immunity pills in reserve for future expeditions. I don’t want us running dry if we hit something worse than gas."

"Understood, My Lord."

Kelvin sat. Gerard stepped forward, producing a slim ledger from his coat.

"Income report," Gerard began, his voice measured and precise. "Monthly revenue from Starfall Iron sales has stabilized at eighty thousand credits after expenses. The pleasure district, under Serena’s management, contributes an additional seventy thousand per month."

Serena offered a small, satisfied nod.

"Trade expansion has been our largest success," Gerard continued. "Through My Lord’s connection with Ruby Churchill, we’ve established a supply agreement with the Churchill family. They purchase refined Starfall Iron at below-market rates in exchange for priority access to our future surplus. The initial contract is worth four hundred thousand credits over four months."

He turned a page. "Additionally, Lady Sophie facilitated an introduction to the Mann family’s merchant network. We now have distribution channels reaching Worlds Eight, Nine, and Eleven — territories we previously had zero presence in."

"Transportation portal gates?" Kael asked.

"A significant initial investment — one hundred sixty thousand credits for the three gates connecting Starfall City to the nearest trade hubs. However, that cost has already been offset by the reduction in overland shipping expenses. At current revenue projections, the gates will pay for themselves entirely within four months."

Gerard paused. "I should note, My Lord, that our income trajectory — if sustained — will eventually rival some of the mid-tier Vorn family territories within the Thirteen Worlds. Possibly exceed them."

A flicker of satisfaction crossed Kael’s expression. "Good work, Gerard."

The butler bowed and resumed his position.

Kael’s gaze shifted to the commanders. "Yuki."

Commander Yuki stood, her chair scraping softly against the stone floor. "Soldier cultivation is progressing ahead of schedule," she said, her voice crisp and cold. "The standard timeline for Foundation Establishment soldiers to reach Mana Heart is four to six years. With the pills from Kelvin’s guild and the —" she paused, choosing her words carefully, "— unexplained increase in the city’s ambient mana density, several soldiers at the peak Foundation establishment realm have broken through in under three months. I cannot fully explain the acceleration, but I am not complaining."

That would be the Lord of Starfall title, Kael thought. He gave no indication of this outwardly.

Vyra spoke next, leaning forward with her elbows on her knees. "Shadow Hounds are progressing well. The older cadets can execute basic reconnaissance and intelligence gathering operations. The younger ones still need another six months before they’re field-ready."

She brushed a strand of hair from her face. "As for dungeons — not a concern. Commander Yuki provided us with mana fluctuation detectors. We can predict dungeon manifestation points up to seventy-two hours in advance. When one appears near the city, we dispatch a cleanup squad before it fully stabilizes. No civilian casualties in the last two months."

"Dungeon cores?" Kael asked.

"Stored in the treasury. Fourteen Rank B cores and two Rank A cores so far."

Kael filed that away. Dungeon cores had uses beyond mere point transactions.

Lira shifted in her seat, drawing Kael’s attention. She sat straighter when his eyes landed on her.

"My Lord," she said. "Intelligence report. Lady Clara has returned from the war front and is now overseeing primary operations at the Vorn Estate."

The room went very still.

Kael’s expression didn’t change, but his mind was already turning. The Second Wife — Lady Clara Fitzgerald. A warrior who fought and claimed territories for the Vorn family with blade and blood. She was not a woman who managed from behind a desk. She led armies. She conquered worlds. And she was the mother of Victor Vorn.

The Fitzgerald Family — one of the strongest vassal houses under the Vorn banner, based on World Six. Famous for producing beast-kin descendants through generations of selective breeding. Warriors with enhanced physical traits, heightened senses, and brutal combat instincts. Clara herself was said to carry lion-kin blood, though she appeared fully human.

Victor was her son. Which meant Victor had the Fitzgerald beast-kin heritage, the military backing of one of the most powerful vassal families, and decades of accumulated power and alliances. His blue talent — inherited from Clara — was the only mark against him in a family that prized talent above all else. But blue was still formidable. And unlike Cassandra, Victor actively wanted the throne.

"I see," Kael said simply.

The meeting continued. Kael asked about the territories surrounding Starfall City — the unclaimed lands, the Vorn-controlled zones, the neutral buffers. Vyra provided a detailed breakdown.

"Directly north — unclaimed wilderness, three abandoned settlements. No strategic value. East — Lord Darius’s territory, a mining operation similar to ours but lower yield. South — unclaimed, but the terrain is mountainous and resource-poor. West—" she hesitated. "West falls under Lady Isabella’s unofficial jurisdiction. She hasn’t claimed it formally, but the trade routes running through it benefit her network."

Kael absorbed the information. Expansion would come, but not yet. Starfall City needed to consolidate first.

"Three months have passed since my last mission," Kael said, shifting the topic. "I’ll be returning to the estate to receive my next assignment. Gerard, Commander Yuki — you’re in charge while I’m gone. Gerard handles administration and economics. Yuki handles military and security. Vyra continues dungeon management and Shadow Hound training. Bruski oversees the mines."

Bruski grunted acknowledgment.

"I want the city running without me," Kael continued. "If something requires my direct decision, use the communication token. Otherwise, handle it."

"Yes, My Lord," came the chorus of replies.

Aria stepped forward. "I’ll be returning to the Shadow Guild as well. I have missions of my own to complete, and my cultivation needs attention."

Kael glanced at her. "How long until your next breakthrough?"

"With the resources from the guild, two to three months. Maybe less if I get good missions."

"Then go. Don’t fall behind."

Aria bowed her head slightly — a gesture that was for show more than respect — and followed Kael out of the hall.

The portal gate hummed as it activated, the circular array glowing with soft blue light. Kael and Aria stepped through and emerged in the main city of Vornheim — the capital of World Thirteen, where the Vorn Estate overlooked the skyline from its mountain perch.

The contrast was immediate. Starfall City was raw, growing, alive with construction and ambition. Vornheim was ancient, settled, suffocating under centuries of accumulated power and tradition.

Elena found him in the eastern garden before he reached the Carismon Wing.

"Kael!"

She collided with him in a hug that was stronger than he expected. At sixteen, Elena had grown — taller, more composed, though the softness in her eyes when she looked at him hadn’t changed. Her cultivation had progressed to Core Formation Rank 4, and the Vernal Blossom Body Art was already smoothing her meridians, giving her movements a grace that hadn’t been there before.

Nora appeared a moment later, her eyes bright and curious as always. At thirteen, she was still small, but there was a sharpness behind her gaze that made grown men uncomfortable.

"You’ve been gone too long," Elena said, pulling back to look at him. "Two months without a visit."

"Building a city takes time," Kael said, ruffling Nora’s hair. She swatted his hand away with practiced annoyance.

Elena’s expression shifted. The warmth in her eyes dimmed, replaced by something more serious. She caught his hand as he turned to leave.

"Kael."

He stopped.

"Accept the mission they give you," she said quietly. "I’ve seen — fragments. There will be a great deal of danger. More than Zenthoria. But the reward will be worth it."

Kael studied her face. Precognition was never certain.

He held her hand between both of his and smiled.

"Alright."

Elena blinked, surprised by how easily he agreed. "You will?"

"Don’t look so shocked." He ruffled her hair again, ignoring her protest. "I was going to accept it anyway."

Her lips pushed into a pout. "You better come back alive."

Nora stepped up beside her sister, hands clasped behind her back, and smiled with an innocence that didn’t quite reach her eyes. "I don’t want to be brotherless yet."

Kael laughed softly and left them standing in the garden.

The Carismon Wing was the military heart of the Vorn Estate — where operational decisions were made and wars planned. After Clara came back, the mission assignments were back to her.

Kael walked through the corridors with unhurried steps.

He found Lady Clara in the main operations chamber, standing over a holographic map of the Thirteen Worlds with her back to the door. She was tall — nearly six feet — with a powerful build that her fitted military uniform did nothing to hide. Silver-streaked black hair was pulled into a tight braid that hung past her shoulders. When she turned, her eyes were amber, with slit pupils that caught the light like a predator’s.

Kael stopped at the threshold and offered a half-bow.

"Lady Clara."
