Chapter 613 - 609: Planting Vegetables on the Private Plot
With his wife making money so quickly, Leng Yuan didn’t want to be left in the dust.
He walked over to the desk to grab a pen, deciding he had to write a couple more articles today.
Meanwhile, Gu Jiaojiao had already finished calculating their spending money.
Leng Yuan had brought back four hundred from the facial soaps, and with the money she already had on hand, they had over a thousand in total. They could easily get through the next two years without touching their savings passbook.
After finishing her calculations, Gu Jiaojiao handed the passbook back to Leng Yuan.
"Honey, you should hold onto this money. It’s our first nest egg; we have to keep it safe."
She wasn’t overly excited, but there was still a small thrill.
Leng Yuan put down the passbook and was about to start writing again when he saw Jiaojiao put on her coat and casually speak up.
"Honey, I had Chen Xiaolan help me buy some vegetable seeds. I’m going to go plant them in a bit. After a while, we’ll have something to eat."
’So much for that.’
It looked like he wouldn’t be writing after all. Leng Yuan glanced at the paper and put his pen down.
The two of them went to their private plot of land. Gu Jiaojiao had clearly planned everything out; she just directed and helped out a little, while Leng Yuan was in charge of the heavy lifting.
After the seeds were planted, they still needed to fetch water to irrigate the soil.
Luckily, they had a well in their courtyard, which made things much more convenient.
The other villagers, when they wanted to water their fields, had to go all the way to the river to fetch water. The round trip was quite a long way.
Few people were overweight back then, probably because life was so hard and tiring, and they didn’t have enough to eat. Under those conditions, how could anyone possibly get fat?
By the time they finished with the private plot, it was already Sunday afternoon. Gu Jiaojiao got ready to take out her students’ test papers to grade them.
These were math tests for the second-year middle school students from the class taught by Teacher Hu Xiuqiao. She had been too busy to grade them herself, so just before the end of the school day, she had given the papers to Gu Jiaojiao and asked for her help.
Gu Jiaojiao found it strange. The second-year math exam had been in the morning, so logically, the tests could have been given to her at noon. But Hu Xiuqiao didn’t hand them over, waiting until it was almost time to leave for the day.
However, the other woman said she had been too busy and hadn’t gotten around to it, so Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t really say anything and just brought them home.
The first few test papers on top had been graded, but there were still over thirty underneath that were untouched.
Just as Gu Jiaojiao was about to start grading the tests, Leng Yuan took the task from her.
"I’ll grade them for you. You get some rest."
’That’s a little odd,’ Gu Jiaojiao thought. ’She had only done the talking; Leng Yuan was the one who had done all the physical labor. He should be the one who was more tired!’
But seeing that he had already taken them, Gu Jiaojiao didn’t stop him.
She casually checked Sweet Girl’s and Xiao Yang’s homework. Both children had done an excellent job, and their handwriting was neat. There was really no need for Gu Jiaojiao to say anything more.
Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t stingy with her praise, complimenting both of them before heading back to the room. As soon as she walked in, she saw Leng Yuan holding a small card, examining it.
Gu Jiaojiao glanced over curiously. "What’s that card? It looks quite pretty."
The card was pink and heart-shaped, with writing in some kind of gold pen. It was pretty just to look at.
But as soon as the words left her mouth, the man’s dark eyes looked up at her, a cryptic smile playing on his lips.
"Pretty?"
There was an inexplicable, dangerous edge to his tone.
Gu Jiaojiao answered subconsciously, "It’s... just okay."
But even though she said it wasn’t pretty, she was still curious about what was written on it. When Gu Jiaojiao leaned in closer, she saw it was a short passage.
"One might fall in love with a stream, but only because they have yet to see the ocean."
"I have seen the entire galaxy, yet I feel you alone are the most unique star."
’Aren’t these the classic lines of a love poem?’
Gu Jiaojiao looked at the card, the corners of her eyes crinkling up. "Is this... a love letter from someone?"
