Chapter 615 - 611: Backlash
Xu Wenwan’s perfume had run out, but she didn’t care. After all, she was married to An Dongyang now. As long as she refused a divorce, she would remain the An Family’s daughter-in-law.
Xu Wenwan’s plan seemed perfect in her mind, but things weren’t nearly that simple.
Once she came to her senses, Mrs. An couldn’t fathom why she had agreed to An Dongyang and Xu Wenwan’s marriage in the first place. Even though they were already married, Mrs. An simply couldn’t stomach it.
She began to lay down the law for Xu Wenwan.
Mrs. An was clever. She knew how to make Xu Wenwan suffer without giving anyone a reason to criticize her.
Take the housework, for instance. Back at the Xu Family home, the most Xu Wenwan ever did was help feed the chickens. Chen Xiumin washed all her clothes for her. After marrying Yun Hao, she made only a couple of meals and did absolutely no other housework.
Now that she was married to An Dongyang, Mrs. An saddled Xu Wenwan with all the household chores.
Not only that, she had to prepare three meals a day for the entire family.
When Xu Wenwan tried to protest, Mrs. An shut her down with a single sentence.
"If you don’t want to do it, you can move out. As long as you’re living in this house, you have to work. This family doesn’t support freeloaders."
Mrs. An wasn’t Chen Xiumin, who was all talk. She actually did what she said she would.
Whenever Xu Wenwan protested, Mrs. An would immediately start packing her things and tell her to get lost.
Xu Wenwan had worked so hard to get the life she wanted; how could she give in so easily?
After a full day of chores and cooking three meals, she waited for An Dongyang to come home, her expression wronged and ready to complain.
But Mrs. An was a step ahead of her. She rose, walked over to An Dongyang, took his jacket, and then shot Xu Wenwan a glare.
"Wen Wan, Dongyang is home. Bring the food to the table!"
"Well, get a move on."
Mrs. An’s tone sharpened when she saw that Xu Wenwan hadn’t budged.
Left with no other choice, Xu Wenwan went into the kitchen to bring out the food she had prepared.
But to her surprise, Mrs. An followed her in.
Xu Wenwan flinched, then lowered her head.
Mrs. An leaned in and warned her in a low voice.
"Xu Wenwan, don’t say I didn’t warn you. If you say one word out of line in front of Dongyang, I’ll kick you both out of the An Family home and cut you off completely. We’ll see then if his salary of ten-something yuan a month is enough to support the two of you."
Having said her piece, Mrs. An walked out as if nothing had happened.
Xu Wenwan bit her lip, feeling incredibly wronged. For the first time, she began to regret her choice.
But the moment that thought surfaced, she immediately pushed it down.
All she had ever wanted was to live a life of wealth. Before transmigrating into the book, she’d complained that her father wasn’t capable enough to give her the pampered life of an heiress like Gu Jiaojiao. After transmigrating, she’d lamented her terrible luck and how everyone seemed to be working against her.
Now that she had schemed so hard to marry An Dongyang, how could she regret it so soon?
’I don’t regret it.’
Once Xu Wenwan had straightened out her thoughts, a smile returned to her face. She brought out the dishes, carefully served everyone a bowl of rice, and waited for them all to be seated before taking her own seat next to An Dongyang.
An Dongyang, however, didn’t notice anything unusual about Xu Wenwan.
Just back from school, An Dongyang was preoccupied with a card he had written. He wondered what Gu Jiaojiao would think when she saw it.
’She’ll probably be delighted!’
’After all, what woman wouldn’t want to be loved by an outstanding man like me?’
He recalled the information he’d gotten from the other teachers in his office: Gu Jiaojiao was from the Qingshan Team.
He suddenly looked at Xu Wenwan and asked in a gentle voice, "Wen Wan, in your Qingshan Team, is there an educated youth named Gu Jiaojiao?"
