Chapter 597 - 593: Xu Wenwan Admits to Beating Someone
Xu Wenwan was very impatient. She’d already severed ties with Village Chief Xu, so what right did he have to hit her?
Stung by Xu Wenwan’s words, Village Chief Xu staggered. Xu Chongfeng immediately rushed forward to support him. Just as he was about to scold Xu Wenwan, Village Chief Xu cut him off.
"Shut your mouth."
Seeing Village Chief Xu’s grim expression, Xu Chongfeng shut his mouth.
Village Chief Xu looked at Xu Wenwan. "Fine. Since you say we’ve severed our ties, I’ll handle this by the book. Did you hit him?"
"I did," Xu Wenwan admitted without the slightest hesitation.
The moment she spoke, Hu Ziqiang exploded. "Xu Wenwan, do you have any idea what you’re saying? Why would you do that?"
He had been defending her just moments ago. Even after she walked in, he still held onto a sliver of trust.
But hearing her admit it with her own mouth, Hu Ziqiang’s world shattered.
Xu Wenwan looked at Hu Ziqiang, and scenes of the three of them together from the past surfaced in her mind. For a moment, a lost look flickered in her eyes. She didn’t know how things had ended up like this either.
She never wanted to marry Yun Hao, and he never wanted to marry her.
Her father, her mother, her two older brothers—they were the ones who forced her to get married.
At this thought, Xu Wenwan whipped her head toward Village Chief Xu. "Dad, are you satisfied now? Isn’t this exactly the outcome you wanted?"
Village Chief Xu sucked in a sharp breath. "What did you just say?"
Xu Wenwan sneered. "I don’t like Yun Hao, and he doesn’t like me. Neither of us wanted to get married. You forced us. Now that our lives have turned out like this, aren’t you satisfied?"
All the strength seemed to drain from Village Chief Xu in an instant. If Xu Chongfeng hadn’t been holding him up, he might have collapsed on the spot.
He pointed at himself. "You’re saying... it’s my fault?"
Xu Wenwan looked away. "Weren’t you the one who forced us to get married?"
Village Chief Xu looked at his daughter, who seemed more and more like a stranger. When she had first returned, she still bore some resemblance to the Xu Family, but now it was as if she had become a completely different person.
He could no longer see any trace of the Xu Family in her features.
He roared, "Fine."
"Fine. Fine! FINE! Since that’s what you think, then I’m washing my hands of this. From now on, I won’t interfere in your life ever again."
With that, he said to his son in a low voice, "Chong Feng, help me home."
Seeing how unwell Village Chief Xu looked, Chen Beiguo worried that the shock might genuinely harm him. He quickly called to Xu Chongfeng, "Hurry and get your dad home. I’ll take care of things here."
Xu Chongfeng gave his sister one last, deep look, then wordlessly helped Village Chief Xu away.
The crowd outside didn’t know what had happened, but seeing Village Chief Xu’s state, they immediately cleared a path.
Leng Yuan pushed the sunflower seeds into Gu Jiaojiao’s hand. "I’m going to go see," he said in a low voice.
"I’ll go with you!"
Leng Yuan nodded.
Gu Jiaojiao knew how to check a pulse, so if something was wrong, she could help.
However, when the two of them caught up to Village Chief Xu, he spoke to them. "You two are good kids. I appreciate the thought. I’m fine, Uncle just wants to be alone for a bit. You should head back."
Only then did Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao head back.
When they returned, however, their previous spot was gone.
Just then, Chen Ru waved to Gu Jiaojiao.
"Jiaojiao, over here!"
Gu Jiaojiao’s eyes lit up as she squeezed through the crowd. "Thank goodness for you."
Chen Ru grinned. ’My size finally comes in handy,’ she thought.
Back in the house, a silence fell over the room after Village Chief Xu’s departure. Hu Ziqiang, however, still had a cold expression. "Even if you two had no feelings for each other, you can’t just beat him up like that!"
